How to get ancient wyvern coins in Monster Hunter Wilds
In Monster Hunter Wilds, ancient wyvern coins are rare collectibles primarily obtained by capturing Curioshell Crabs, which spawn across all five regions, especially near pop-up camps in areas like the Scarlet Forest’s Area 8. These coins can also be found as rare ground spawns in underwater locations such as the Underground Lake in Scarlet Forest, where diving near the camp can reveal coins on small dry patches. Additionally, players can acquire them by catching Gastronome Tuna or through trading with NPCs like Trader Rove. Setting up pop-up camps in key locations allows for efficient farming by fast traveling between spawn points to maximize coin collection. These coins are essential for trading with Gawdygog in the Scarlet Forest for valuable materials, including the coveted Sinister Cloth and Gold Melding Tickets.
Ancient wyvern coinsmight be found in just about any region, but they spawn very rarely. They don’t show up on your map, and they just kind of appear on the ground. Watch the list of collectible items on the left of your HUD for them.
A good place to look for one is in the Scarlet Forest’s Area 8: Underground Lake pop-up camp. To the west of the camp, there’s an area to drop down to. Head over to the edge of the water and dive in to the deep part. This will bring you out on a small patch of dry land where you can (sometimes) find an ancient wyvern coin on the ground.
Since you can’t really rely on the randomly spawning ground coins, you’ll have to turn to other methods. Specifically:
- Collecting them from gastronome tuna (whopper aquatic life)
- Collecting them from curioshell crabs (endemic life)
- Trading for them

Catch gastronome tuna
The Gastronome Tuna is a large “whopper” fish found primarily in Area 17 of the Scarlet Forest during the Plenty season in Monster Hunter Wilds. To catch this elusive fish, players need to use the Tuff Joint Bait, which is unlocked through the side mission “The Catch of a Lifetime.” Once spotted, the Gastronome Tuna requires a special fishing minigame where you must carefully follow its movements with the control stick and reel it in when it tires. Successfully catching a Gastronome Tuna rewards players with valuable items, including Ancient Wyvern Coins, making it a key method for obtaining these rare collectibles in the game.
Gastronome tuna are a type of “whopper” – really big fish – you can catch after you get the tuff joing bait from Kanya.
Gastronome tuna are only found in Area 17 of the Scarlet Forest and we’ve only seen them during a plenty. Catching one has a small chance of rewarding you with an ancient wyvern coin.
Capture curioshell crabs
Curioshell Crabs are rare endemic life creatures in Monster Hunter Wilds that carry Ancient Wyvern Coins, making them a key target for farming these valuable items. They have a distinctive faintly glowing yellow shell and are larger than typical crabs, often found in specific fixed locations across all five main regions, including the Scarlet Forest, Windward Plains, Oilwell Basin, Ruins of Wyveria, and Iceshard Cliffs. These crabs flee quickly when spotted, so using a Capture Net promptly is essential to catch them and obtain the coins. Setting up pop-up camps near their spawn points, particularly in Area 8 of the Scarlet Forest and Area 6 of the Windward Plains, allows for efficient farming by fast traveling between locations to reset their spawns. Capturing Curioshell Crabs not only adds to your endemic life collection but also rewards you with Ancient Wyvern Coins, which can be traded for valuable items like Armor Spheres and Melding Tickets.
A much better way to find ancient wyvern coins is to look for curioshell crabs.
These are hard-to-spot endemic life that can show up in any region. Chances are, the only clue you’ve gotten about them so far is Alma saying, “Is that creature holding something?” If you can spot it and snag it with your capture net before it runs away (wearing the ghillie mantle helps you stay hidden), you’ll get whatever it was carrying – which in our testing has been an ancient wyvern coin.
There are a few places that they tend to spawn pretty reliably:
- Windward Plains, Area 6: Valley Hideaway Campsite up the narrow path to the southeast
- Windward Plains, Area 14: Groundwater Vein on the large cave southeast of the camp
- Scarlet Forest, Area 6: Flowering Rocks in the underwater swimming area north of camp
- Scarlet Forest, Area 8: Underground Lake on the fishing outcrop north of the camp
The first time you catch a curioshell crab, you’ll also get the A Prize Held High acheivement/trophy.
Trade with Rove
In Monster Hunter Wilds, you can trade with Rove, a trader located in the Iceshard Cliffs, to obtain Ancient Wyvern Coins. Rove typically asks for items like Gobletweed and Chaliceweed, which are underwater plants, in exchange for these valuable coins. The main (only?) thing you’ll use ancient wyvern coins for is to trade with Gawdygog at the Wudwud Hideout in the Scarlet Forest. They’ll exchange the coins for things like cooking ingredients, armor spheres, drearsite scraps, and gold melding tickets.
What secret locations hide the rarest ancient wyvern coins in Monster Hunter Wilds
The rarest Ancient Wyvern Coins in Monster Hunter Wilds are hidden in secret and hard-to-reach locations across several regions, with the Scarlet Forest and Windward Plains offering prime spots. Notably, in the Scarlet Forest, Area 8’s Underground Lake features a hidden underwater cave where coins can spawn on a small dry ledge, and near the Area 6 Flowering Rocks campsite, coins appear around fishing spots and algae pools. Curioshell Crabs, which carry these coins, spawn near fishing spots and specific landmarks like the Bonepile by the wall outside Area 8 camp in the Ruins of Wyveria and the water edge near the Flowering Rocks in Scarlet Forest.
