Oblivion Remastered Followers Guide: How to Recruit Companions and Allies

Guides

Step into the world of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and never face the dangers of Cyrodiil alone again. Whether you’re battling Daedra or exploring dark dungeons, recruiting followers like the iconic Adoring Fan, powerful Mage Apprentices, or noble Knights of the Nine can turn the tide of any fight. Ready to build your ultimate squad? Here’s how to unlock and command these companions on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox to enhance your adventure.

There are temporary followers who can assist you in certain missions, but they go away once you’re done with the quest. If you want a reliable partner, you should look for permanent followers.

In this in-progress Oblivion Remastered guide, we explain how to recruit followers followed by all followers we’ve found so far in Oblivion Remastered with details on how to recruit them.

How followers work in Oblivion Remastered

Followers in Oblivion Remastered are non-player characters (NPCs) who can accompany the player on their adventures after completing specific quest chains. These companions vary in class and equipment but have limited interaction options, such as being invited to follow, told to wait, or dismissed. Unlike some other RPGs, followers cannot carry extra gear, level up, or have their weapons and armor changed or repaired, which limits their usefulness in the late game. Players can have multiple followers, but only one of each type, and if a follower dies or is dismissed, they can usually be found and recruited again. Followers provide valuable support by engaging enemies and can have unique abilities like healing or spellcasting, enhancing the player’s experience without the feeling of traveling alone.

Oblivion Remastered offers you the chance to recruit companions. These are NPCs who stick with you once you meet the requirements to invite them, which means completing long chains of quests. Followers behave differently from one another, having their own classes and sets of equipment.

When it comes to directly commanding them, you can’t do much. Talk to them and a few options appear. Besides inviting and discharging them, the other option you have is to ask them to stay put in one place.

Followers are a great tool to make your journey easier and less lonely, though. You can have as many companions following as you want to, but only one of each type. You can’t have two Knights of the Nine, for example. And even if you send one away, it’s possible to find them and call that specific follower back to your group.

Oblivion Remastered followers list

The Oblivion Remastered followers list includes a select group of permanent companions that players can recruit to assist them throughout their journey. Notable followers include the Adoring Fan, who joins after becoming the Grand Champion of the Imperial City Arena; Mage Apprentices, available after completing the Mage Guild questline and achieving the rank of Arch-Mage; and the Knights of the Nine, recruitable upon finishing their dedicated questline involving the religious order revival. Additionally, players can recruit Dark Brotherhood assassins after completing the Dark Brotherhood questline. Each follower has unique abilities and limitations, such as fixed equipment and no leveling, but they provide valuable support in combat and exploration. Players can only have one follower of each type at a time, and followers can be dismissed and re-recruited as needed.

Below, you will find a list of recruitable followers we’ve found so far Oblivion Remastered.

  • Mage apprentices
  • Adoring Fan
  • Knights of the Nine

While the quests to unlock followers are different, none of them are locked behind the main campaign. So, you can start looking for followers from the first minutes of the game.

However, some missions are quite demanding, and depending on your level and gear, you might have to spend some time grinding to improve them before you can tackle these quests again. If you want to unlock any of these followers quickly, consider setting your game to the Novice difficulty level, in which you can easily kill most enemies with a single hit.

How to recruit Mage apprentices

To recruit Mage Apprentices in Oblivion Remastered, you must first complete the entire Mages Guild questline and earn the title of Arch-Mage. Begin by joining the Mages Guild in any major city and obtaining recommendations from the guild masters of all seven guild halls. This grants you access to the Arcane University in the Imperial City, where you will undertake a series of quests from Raminus Polus and later from Arch-Mage Hannibal Traven. After completing the final quest “Confront the King,” Mage Apprentices become available for recruitment. You can find them wandering around the Arcane University, and they will follow you as companions, providing magical support during your adventures.

As the name implies, mage apprentices are low-rank mages who you can ask to follow you. You can’t determine which spells they have access to, but in general, they are great at offering support from afar if you are playing a more frontline class. A shield and a sword are more than enough to hold enemies while the mages attack them.

The path to unlocking the mage apprentices as your followers is a long one though. You need to complete all the Mage guild quests and become the Arch-Mage. To start, visit any of the Mage guilds in the major cities in the game and talk to the head of that branch to join the guild.

Your next step is to visit each guild branch and ask for their leaders to give you a recommendation, which will grant you access to the Imperial City’s Arcane University. There are seven mage guilds, each with a different mission for you to complete and receive a recommendation.

With this step completed, you need to go through all the tasks given by Raminus Polus at Arcane University. You start by completing the “A Mage’s Staff” mission, which is followed by the “Ulterior Motives,” “Vahtacen’s Secret,” and “Necromancer’s Moon.” Whenever you complete one of them, talk to Raminus Polus to raise your rank in the guild.

The last batch of quests is given by Hannibal Traven, the current Arch-Mage. You need to complete the “Liberation or Apprehension?,”“Information at a Price,” “A Plot Revealed,”“The Necromancer’s Amulet,” “The Bloodworm Helm,”“Ambush,” and “Confront the King” missions.

The mage apprentices become available once you are done with the “Confront the King” quest. You can find them walking around the Arcane University or in the Mage Quarters depending on the time of the day.

How to recruit Adoring Fan

To recruit the Adoring Fan in Oblivion Remastered, you must first become the Grand Champion of the Imperial City Arena. This involves progressing through the Arena ranks by winning a series of 21 fights, culminating in a final battle against Agronak gro-Malog, the Grey Prince. After defeating him and earning the Grand Champion title, exit the Arena to find the Adoring Fan waiting outside, ready to join you as a follower. Although he offers little combat support and mainly provides light with a torch and enthusiastic company, he can accompany you anytime after this point.

The most iconic follower in Oblivion is back in Oblivion Remastered – the enthusiastic little yellow-haired fellow called Adoring Fan. In terms of skills, they have little to offer besides holding a torch to illuminate your way, following you around, and cheering you on. But once a battle strikes, you can’t count on them.

If you believe the strongest bond is made out of admiration, the Adoring Fan should be among the followers in your party. Ironically, for you to recruit them, first you must go through a long series of fights in the Imperial City’s Arena.

To unlock Adoring Fan as your follower, you need to climb the Arena ranks and become the Grand Champion. This title is granted to you once you defeat Agronak gro-Malog. However, before that, you must go from the Pit Dog rank up to Champion, which involves facing 21 fights before you can challenge Agronak gro-Malog.

Your journey in the arena begins by visiting Owyn in the Bloodworks, who registers you as part of the Blue Team. All you need to do after talking to him is to wear the armor you gained and tell Owyn you’re ready for a battle. You can only participate in fights while wearing the armor.

With Agronak gro-Malog dead, leave the Arena and Adoring Fan will go talk to you. In case you want to invite them back to your party, you can find Adoring Fan around the arena – holding a torch.

How to recruit Knights of the Nine

To recruit a Knight of the Nine follower in Oblivion Remastered, you must first complete the entire Knights of the Nine questline. Begin by speaking to The Prophet outside the church in Anvil to start the “Pilgrimage” quest, which involves visiting nine wayshrines dedicated to the Nine Divines. After completing the pilgrimage, continue through the subsequent quests, including retrieving the Helm of the Crusader, restoring the Priory of the Nine, and finally defeating the evil Umaril the Unfeathered. Once Umaril is defeated and the order is restored, you can visit the Priory of the Nine to recruit any Knight of the Nine as your follower. You can only have one knight accompany you at a time, but they are powerful allies equipped with healing spells and strong combat abilities.

The Knights of the Nine is a religious order that you can reestablish. By doing so, you have access to these knights as followers. Although you can only have one of them at a time following you, it doesn’t matter which you have with you in practical terms. They all have access to the same gear.

A Knight of the Nine is a strong companion to fight in the frontline for you or with you. Because they have access to healing spells, a knight rarely dies in combat.

Before you can start asking powerful templar-like soldiers to follow you around, you must complete all the Knights of the Nine chain quests. The first one is called “Pilgrimage” and it’s given by The Prophet, a NPC you meet in Anvil. Be sure to talk to other characters in the city to ask about The Prophet in case you can’t find them.

The “Pilgrimage” mission requires you to visit nine wayshrines, one for each of the Nine Divines. Just look for old structures circled by pillars and interact with them. Once you have prayed in the last shrine, you complete this quest.

The next step is to visit a lost shrine under the water in Lake Rumare and retrieve the Helm of the Crusader to complete “The Shrine of the Crusader” quest. This quest is followed by the “Priory of the Nine.” To actually finish this one, you must complete the “Nature’s Fury,”“The Path of the Righteous,”“Wisdom of the Ages,” and “Stendarr’s Mercy” missions.

By this point, you need to complete “The Faithful Squire” and “The Sword of the Crusader” to have almost all the relics you have been looking for. The ninth one you get from “The Blessing of Talos” mission.

The final quest is called “Umaril the Unfeathered,” where you fight an evil being in another dimension. Just your day-to-day kind of task.

With all these quests completed, the Knights of the Nine order is back and you can talk to any of the members and request them to follow you. If you want to call them back to your party, you just need to visit the Priory of the Nine to find them.

What secret tricks can I use to quickly recruit followers in Oblivion Remastered

To quickly recruit followers in Oblivion Remastered, consider these secret tricks:

  • Recruit the Adoring Fan early by focusing on the Imperial City Arena. Win your fights and rise through the ranks to become the Grand Champion. After defeating the final opponent Agronak gro-Malog, the Adoring Fan will follow you. This is the fastest and easiest way to get a follower, as the Arena fights can be completed relatively quickly compared to other questlines.

  • Adjust the difficulty to Novice to breeze through Arena battles and other quests, making follower recruitment faster since enemies are weaker and can be defeated in one hit.

  • For Mage Apprentices, although the full Mage Guild questline is long, you can start it early by joining any Mage Guild and working on their tasks. Completing the entire questline unlocks the ability to recruit mage apprentices who provide ranged magical support.

  • Use quest followers early by starting but not completing certain quests that temporarily grant you followers, giving you some company before permanent followers are unlocked.

  • Recruit Knights of the Nine after completing their dedicated questline, which is longer but grants powerful fighter companions.

  • Additionally, some advanced players use mods or exploits to increase party size and recruit more followers simultaneously, but this is outside the base game mechanics.

These strategies help you quickly build a team to accompany you on your adventures in Cyrodiil.

How can I speed up the process of recruiting mage apprentices in Oblivion Remastered

To speed up recruiting Mage Apprentices in Oblivion Remastered, focus on these key steps:

  • Complete the entire Mage Guild questline quickly: You must join the Mage Guild in any major city, then visit each of the seven guild branches to earn recommendations. This unlocks access to the Arcane University and its questline, which you must finish to become Arch-Mage and unlock Mage Apprentices for recruitment.

  • Prioritize recruiting the black-haired Breton apprentice first, as she belongs to a unique follower set. Recruiting her first allows you to recruit a second Mage Apprentice, effectively doubling your magical support early on.

  • Adjust game difficulty to Novice to breeze through quests and combat, reducing time spent on challenges needed to progress the Mage Guild quests.

  • Use fast travel and quest markers efficiently to minimize downtime between guild branches and quest objectives.

  • Level up your magic skills quickly using custom low-cost spells and repeated casting to improve your effectiveness in Mage Guild tasks. This speeds up quest completion since some tasks require proficient magic use.

Following this approach will significantly reduce the time needed to unlock and recruit Mage Apprentices in Oblivion Remastered.
