Dragon Quest 7 Chests Guide

Guides

Hidden within the hold of Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, a thief’s key whispers a path through ironbound secrets.

How to open locked chests in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined

In Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, you unlock locked chests by finding keys scattered throughout the world-most notably the Thief’s Key, the Magic Key, and the Ultimate Key. Use the Thief’s Key on chests you encounter in Alltrades Abbey and Pilgrim’s Perdition areas to access early rewards, then progress to Bulgio’s Palace for the Magic Key and finally the Cathedral of Light basement to obtain the Ultimate Key, which can open any chest. Remember to check chests you pass by again later in the story, as new keys unlock additional loot without blocking progression.

In order to open the locked chests in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, you need to obtain the thief’s key. This special item only opens chests, and you can find it in a chest (ha!) in Pilgrim’s Perdition: Hidden Room (Past) in the Alltrades Abbey region. It’s inside the building on the north side of the map, near the water well.

The chest containing the key is behind the counter beside a silver map fragment. If you try to open the chest or grab the fragment, the counter clerk will stop you, saying these items are someone’s down payment for the room they rented.

To open the chest and collect the key (and don’t forget the map fragment), progress in the main quest until you have freed Alltrades Abbey (Past) and defeated Cardinal Sin. Once you have done that, travel back to Pilgrim’s Perdition and enter the building to find that the clerk is gone, giving you the chance to grab the key for yourself.

Where to find the Magic Key in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined

You can get the Magic Key a bit later in the story, in the Palazzo di Bulgio in the L’Arca region, after you obtain the Flying Carpet.

Prerequisites

  • Progress the story until you clear the Hardlypool events and obtain the Mermaid Moon, then finish the follow-up in La Bravoure to receive the Flying Carpet.

  • Once you have the carpet, you can reach the island in the L’Arca region where the Palazzo di Bulgio is located.

Exact Magic Key location

  • Fly to the L’Arca region and land near the large mansion-like building: this is the Palazzo di Bulgio.

  • Go inside and head all the way up to the third (top) floor.

  • In the bedroom on this floor, open the red treasure chest located behind or above the bed, next to a pair of wardrobes/dressers; this chest contains the Magic Key.

Using the Magic Key

  • Once obtained, the Magic Key works automatically when you inspect compatible locked red chests; you don’t need to equip it.

  • It opens a higher tier of chests than the Thief’s Key but still cannot open everything; the late-game Ultimate Key is required for the final tier of locks.

Where is the Ultimate Key in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined

The Ultimate Key is found in the Cathedral of Light late in the game, on the first basement level in a room with multiple chests.

When you can get it

  • It becomes available during the endgame sequence, once you can access the Cathedral of Light on the way toward the final boss (after awakening the Almighty and advancing the main story to the final act).

  • If you somehow miss it during that story sequence, you can still obtain it later in the same general area (Cathedral of Light/Blight) by revisiting the basement prison section.

Exact location and directions

  • Go to the Cathedral of Light and head down to Basement Level 1.

  • From the B1 entrance, take the stairs on the north side to reach a prison-like area with cells full of monsters and a room containing three treasure chests.

  • Open the center chest in that room; this chest contains the Ultimate Key.

What the Ultimate Key does

  • The Ultimate Key opens every locked chest and door that the Thief’s Key, Bandit’s Key, or Magic Key cannot open, effectively giving you access to all remaining red locked chests in the game.

  • You do not need to equip it; once it is in your inventory, interacting with any compatible locked chest or door will automatically use the key.
