Step into the shadowy world of Persona 5: The Phantom X, where a new hero emerges under the codename Wonder. But who is he really? While players can name the protagonist anything they like, the game quietly reveals his official, canon identity-Nagisa Kamishiro-setting him apart with a definitive name in the series’ sprawling lore. Unlock the mystery behind Wonder’s true name and why it matters to fans worldwide.
Lucky for you, the canon name should have been filled in already, but if you accidentally deleted it or you don’t know if this is the real deal, then we explain more about the P5X protagonist’s canon name below.
What’s the protagonist’s canon name in Persona 5: The Phantom X?
The protagonist’s canon name in Persona 5: The Phantom X is Nagisa Kamisiro. This name is pre-filled during the game’s opening mission, Prologue: Discover a Secret World, but players can choose to change it if they prefer. Despite the option to personalize the name, Nagisa Kamisiro is recognized as the official default name in the global and Japanese releases. The character is also commonly referred to by his Phantom Thieves codename, “Wonder”.
In Japanese, the canon name for the Persona 5: The Phantom X protagonist is Nagisa Kamishiro. However, this doesn’t fit in the name slot for the English version of the game – so the canon name for the global version is Nagisa Kamisiro.
Ultimately, you do not have to name your character Nagisa, of course. You can literally name him whatever you want. You can name him Zoo Smell, if you want. (Just make sure to change both his first name and last name, if you wanted to. We saw a lot of names in the beta where only the first name was changed, for some reason.)
It should be noted that since this is a game with online friend capability, the name you set is your account name. You may want to pick something unique or you’ll be one Nagisa Kamisiro in an ocean of them. If you plan on adding a bunch of friends in-game, you may want to set your name as something your buddies can identify.
That is all to say that “canon” has different definitions across the board. Persona protagonists have had varying names across media. For example, the Persona 4 protagonist is named Souji Seta in the manga, but Yu Narukami in Persona 4 Arena and the anime adaption. Similarly, the protagonist from Persona 5 was named Akira Kurusu in the manga adaption, but has canonically been referred to as Ren Amamiya, which was the default name in Persona 5 Royal. (Ren is fine, but to me he’ll always be Akira!)
It’s entirely possible that Nagisa will appear elsewhere in other media with a different name, but we’re basing this off of the default name available to us in the beta that we played.
Can you change the protagonist’s name in Persona 5: The Phantom X?
In Persona 5: The Phantom X, the protagonist’s canon name is Nagisa Kamishiro (sometimes spelled Kamisiro due to character limits in the global version). Although this default name is pre-filled when you start the game, players are free to change it to whatever they like. The name you choose will be used as your in-game identity and displayed in social features like global chat. You can change the protagonist’s name through the profile menu on the in-game smartphone, with the first name change being free and subsequent changes costing in-game currency called Meta Jewels. Regardless of the chosen name, party members will still refer to the protagonist as “Wonder” during the game.
Yes! If you went with Nagisa (or Zoo Smell, by our recommendation) and you’re regretting it, you can change your name for free once. After the first name change, you’ll need to pay 200 Meta Jewels (the premium currency that you can earn by playing the game) for every subsequent change.
You can change your name by clicking your profile icon at the top of your phone screen menu, but only after you’ve progressed a bit in the story. From there, click the ellipses above your set icon to access the name change feature.
Discover the mysterious origins of Nagisa Kamisiro in Persona 5 X
Nagisa Kamishiro, the protagonist of Persona 5: The Phantom X, is a mysterious second-year student at Kokatsu Academy who lives a relatively solitary life in Zoshigaya, Tokyo, due to his parents’ frequent travels. Despite his silent and somewhat emotionally distant demeanor, he harbors a serious sense of justice and a strong will to protect his desires, which is a fundamental theme in the game’s storyline.
Nagisa’s origins are tied closely to the game’s overarching narrative around the Metaverse, a supernatural realm representing the unconscious desires of humanity. Early in the game, while attending school, Nagisa is drawn into the Velvet Room, a definitive place in the Persona series where Persona users grow and develop. His unusual knowledge of choice attracts the attention of Igor, the Velvet Room’s custodian. Soon after, he encounters a talking owl named Lufel and awakens his Persona, Jánošík, marking his transformation into the Phantom Thieves’ leader, codenamed Wonder.
Nagisa’s background includes his ability to foresee potential futures and a personality that balances emotional distance with a mischievous side. He often appears indifferent toward schoolwork and others but is driven by a deep sense to help those in distress. His home life is marked by relative isolation, primarily interacting with neighbors, and limited contact with his mother. These elements create a complex character who grows through the formation of bonds and facing personal challenges within the Metaverse.
In the storyline, Nagisa navigates a parallel world where the iconic Phantom Thieves from the original Persona 5 do not exist. Instead, his group takes on the role of thieves reclaiming stolen desires from the shadows that haunt humanity.
In summary, Nagisa Kamishiro’s mysterious origins are entwined with his role as Wonder, a silent but determined youth drawn into a supernatural conflict that demands courage, justice, and self-discovery in a new parallel universe version of the Persona 5 world.
What is the significance of the name Nagisa Kamisiro in Persona 5 X origins
The significance of the name Nagisa Kamisiro in Persona 5: The Phantom X origins lies primarily in its role as the protagonist’s canonical identity within the game’s lore. While players can choose any name for the protagonist, Nagisa Kamisiro is the official, default name pre-filled for the character in the global release of the game. This name distinguishes the protagonist, known by the codename Wonder, from previous Persona 5 protagonists by providing a definitive personal identity in this new parallel universe setting.
Nagisa Kamisiro is portrayed as a second-year student at Kokatsu Academy with a mysterious background, including abilities such as foreseeing potential futures and a complex personality balancing emotional distance with a serious sense of justice. His canonical name grounds the character in the narrative beyond the codename Wonder, helping fans and the game’s story clearly define this new hero’s unique place within the Persona franchise.
The slight variation in spelling to “Kamisiro” rather than “Kamishiro” in some versions is due to character limits in the game’s naming system for the English/global release. The name thus serves not only as an identifier but also reinforces the protagonist’s distinct narrative and thematic role in Persona 5: The Phantom X’s storyline, where he leads the Phantom Thieves in a parallel world without the original game’s iconic Phantom Thieves.
