Step into The Outer Worlds 2 from a whole new angle. While Obsidian’s space-faring RPG is built for first-person immersion, here’s how players can experiment with a third-person view to explore Halcyon’s chaotic frontier from a fresh perspective.
How to change to third-person in The Outer Worlds 2
In The Outer Worlds 2, switching to third-person perspective allows you to experience the game from a broader viewpoint, enhancing exploration and combat visibility. To change to third-person, access the game’s settings menu, navigate to the gameplay options, and select the camera perspective option. From there, toggle from first-person to third-person view. This switch provides a different way to engage with the world and characters, making your adventure even more immersive.
If you like to swap from a first-person perspective to a third-person camera view, here’s how to do it:
- Open the settings.
- Go to “gameplay”.
- Scroll down to “perspective” and click the arrows to change from first-person to third-person.
You can choose between two different third-person modes: “Third Person Near” and “Third Person Far.” The first places the camera just behind your character, whereas the latter places the camera a few meters away. Here’s what that looks like:

You can also switch between the default and the alternate shoulder. As you may have noticed in the example above, the third-person camera in The Outer Worlds 2 is never positioned directly behind your character, but always a bit to the left (so it doesn’t interfere with the visor at the center of the screen). By swapping to the alternate shoulder, you can position the camera on the right side of the character instead. This may be especially useful if you’re left-handed.
Instead of using the settings menu, you can also switch perspective through the corresponding keybind: Press Uon a keyboard or hold the left menu button (the small “select” button) on a controller. To quickly swap between shoulder perspectives, press H on a keyboard or hold the upward arrow button on a controller.
If you like to play in first-person, but simply wish to view your character and surroundings in third-person every now and then, you might keep the first-person setting and trigger the idle camera from the main menu instead. In this case, as soon as your character moves, you’ll go back to the Outer Worlds 2’s first-person perspective.
-Enable third-person by default in settings for The Outer Worlds 2
To enable third-person by default in The Outer Worlds 2, open the Settings menu, navigate to the Gameplay section, and locate the Perspective option. Select either Third Person Near or Third Person Far to set the third-person view as your default gameplay perspective.
Steps to Enable Third-Person by Default
-
Open the Settings menu from the main or pause screen.
-
Go to the Gameplay tab.
-
Find the Perspective setting and select your preferred third-person mode (Near or Far).
-
Confirm your choices and return to the game. You will now start in third-person automatically.
This adjustment allows you to enjoy The Outer Worlds 2 entirely from a third-person view, including exploration and combat, as long as you keep this setting enabled.
How to set third-person as default on PC settings menu
To set third-person as the default perspective on PC in The Outer Worlds 2, follow these steps:
-
Open the in-game Settings menu.
-
Navigate to the Gameplay tab.
-
Find the “Perspective” option.
-
Select either “Third Person Near” or “Third Person Far” as your preferred default camera view.
-
Confirm and exit the settings menu.
After this, the game will start in third-person view by default without needing to toggle during gameplay. On PC, you can also quickly switch perspectives anytime by pressing the ’U’ key, but the setting above makes third-person your default starting view every time you launch or load your game.
