Our Monster Hunter Wilds guide will tell you where to find grand escunites and how to catch them.

Where to find grand escunite locations in Monster Hunter Wilds

Grand Escunite in Monster Hunter Wilds can be found primarily in the Scarlet Forest region, with the best locations being the Underground Lake near the Pop-up Camp in Area 8, the deep waters between Areas 12 and 13, and the large lake in Area 17. These glowing, nautilus-like creatures are most visible during the evening, nighttime, and morning, especially in the Season of Plenty, which increases fish spawn rates. The Area 8 cave near the water’s edge and the hidden cavern behind a waterfall in Area 12 are particularly good spots. Patience is key, as Grand Escunites have unpredictable movements and can be elusive, so resting to change the time of day and season can help refresh their spawn.

Grand escunites are only found in the Scarlet Forest. They’re easiest to see at nighttime, and, while it’s not necessary, fishing for them during a plenty helps a lot.

There are a few places to check for grand escunite locations (remember, always at nighttime):

  • You might find them in the pond at the Area 8: Underground Lake pop-up camp
  • You also might find them along the Area 17: Great Lake Shore
  • But you’ll almost always find them in the deep water between Areas 12 and 13 northwest of the Area 12: Northeast camp

Grand escunites are easy to spot because they glow in the dark.

How to catch a grand escunite in Monster Hunter Wilds

To catch a Grand Escunite in Monster Hunter Wilds, head to the Scarlet Forest, especially the Underground Lake in Area 8, during the evening in the season of Plenty, as this is when they are most likely to appear. Set up a Pop-Up Camp nearby for easy access and to reset spawns if needed. Use the Tentacle Jig bait, which you receive from Kanya when starting the “Razzle Dazzle” side quest, and cast it close to the Grand Escunite’s tentacles, which act as its head. Be patient and slowly reel in when the creature shows interest, as they can be hesitant to bite. Avoid using the capture net, as it won’t count towards quest completion. If you don’t find one, fast travel away and return to reset the spawn.

Grand escunites (and regular escunites, for that matter) are tricky to fish for because it’s unclear which direction they’re heading – they move in the direction of their shells, but they grab food in the direction of their tentacles.

Your best bet is to move your tentacle jig as close to the grand escunite as you can, and keep reeling slowly. Be patient with this – it’s pretty hard to catch their attention and, even then, they’re pretty hesitant to take the bait. They’re usually pretty slow moving, so you’ll definitely notice when they take an interest.

What makes the Scarlet Forest Area 8 the best spot for Grand Escunite

The Scarlet Forest Area 8 is considered the best spot for finding Grand Escunite in Monster Hunter Wilds primarily because of its convenient Underground Lake Pop-up Camp location, which allows easy access and frequent resets to refresh the fish spawns. This area features a hidden cave behind a waterfall where Grand Escunites spawn predominantly during the evening, nighttime, or morning in the Season of Plenty, increasing the likelihood of encountering these rare nautilus-like creatures. The combination of a manageable cave size, specific spawn times, and the ability to rest repeatedly at the nearby camp to reset conditions makes Area 8 the most efficient and reliable location for hunting Grand Escunites.

Why is evening the optimal time to hunt Grand Escunite in Area 8

Evening is the optimal time to hunt Grand Escunite in Area 8 of the Scarlet Forest because this rare nautilus-like creature predominantly spawns during evening, nighttime, and morning hours, with evening being particularly reliable for encounters. Players have reported catching multiple Grand Escunites in quick succession during the evening in Area 8’s underground cave, making it the most dependable time to find them. Additionally, fishing during the Season of Plenty further increases the chances of their appearance by boosting overall fish activity in the area. The combination of the specific time window and favorable seasonal conditions creates the best opportunity to spot and catch Grand Escunite in this location.
