As Pokémon GO trainers gear up for Go Fest 2024, “The Dawn of a New Discovery” special research quest offers a pivotal choice: tune your radar to Emolga, Crabrawler, or Ducklett. This decision not only shapes your quest challenges and rewards but also influences which Pokémon will appear more frequently nearby, making it a crucial step for shiny hunters and collectors alike. Which path will you choose to unlock the secrets of Cosmog and claim your place in this new adventure?
For those who do have a Go Fest ticket, completing this quest then unlocks exclusive quest “The Dusk Settles”, which then rewards an encounter with one of Cosmog’s evolutions and enough Solar or Lunar Fusion Energy to turn fuse your chosen legendary with Necrozma.
One note before we begin – keep in mind that you’ll need to complete a raid in the final step, so you may want to hold on to your daily pass until you get there, if you’re planning on finishing the quest during the event.
’The Dawn of a New Discovery’ Special Research quest steps
The Dawn of a New Discovery Special Research quest in Pokémon Go Fest 2024 begins with completing initial tasks such as spinning PokéStops, catching Pokémon, and finishing field research. After these first steps, players must choose one of three branching paths-Emolga, Crabrawler, or Ducklett-each offering unique tasks focused on catching seven of the chosen Pokémon, powering up, and evolving others. This choice also tunes the in-game radar to prioritize encounters with the selected Pokémon. Completing the quest rewards players with encounters including Cosmog and themed Pikachu, as well as Cosmog candies, which are valuable for evolving and powering up related Pokémon. The tasks and rewards are largely similar across paths, with the main difference being the specific Pokémon targeted during the quest.
All players who open the game on Sunday, July 14 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. will get this quest. This quest is also mandatory for ticket holders to complete in order to unlock the next quest, “The Dusk Settles.”
’The Dawn of a New Discovery’ step 1 of 3
- Spin 3 PokéStops or gyms (20 Poké Balls)
- Catch 10 Pokémon (3 Nanab Berries)
- Complete 2 Field Research tasks (100 XP)
Rewards: 3 Potions, Pikachu (sun crown) encounter, 100 Stardust
After this point, you’ll need to pick between Emolga, Crabrawler, or Ducklett. The steps and rewards are mostly the same across the paths, except one of the steps, which will reward you with your chosen Pokémon for catching seven of that Pokémon. Your radar will prioritize the chosen Pokémon, too. You can read more on this choice in the later section on this guide.
’The Dawn of a New Discovery’ step 2 of 3
- Catch 7 Emolga, Crabrawler or Ducklett (Emolga, Crabrawler, or Ducklett encounter)
- Power up Pokémon 8 times (20 Poké Balls)
- Evolve 9 Pokémon (3 Pinap Berries)
Rewards: 1 Silver Pinap Berry, Cosmog encounter, 1 Razz Berry
’The Dawn of a New Discovery’ step 3 of 3
- Explore 1 km (3 Revives)
- Battle in a raid (3 Super Potions)
- Earn 2,000 XP (3 Max Revives)
Rewards: 5 Necrozma stickers, Pikachu (moon crown) encounter, 10 Cosmog Candy
With the above done, those with a Go Fest Global ticket can then begin “The Dusk Settles”.
’Radar Tuning’ choose a path outcome: Should you choose Emolga, Crabrawler, or Ducklett?
In Pokémon Go’s Special Research quest “The Dawn of a New Discovery,” players must choose one of three Radar Tuning paths: Emolga, Crabrawler, or Ducklett. This choice affects the specific Pokémon that will be prioritized on your nearby radar and the tasks you complete, such as catching seven of the chosen Pokémon. While the overall rewards, including a Cosmog encounter and Cosmog candies, remain the same regardless of path, the Emolga path is often recommended due to Emolga’s usefulness in battles and its relative rarity compared to Crabrawler and Ducklett. However, if you prefer easier catches or are aiming for a particular shiny form, Crabrawler or Ducklett might be better options as they spawn more frequently in the game. Ultimately, the choice depends on your personal preference and gameplay goals, but remember it is final once made.
After step one, you get the choice between tuning your radar towards Emolga, Crabralwer, and Ducklett.
This choice results in two things:
- The next quest objective will make you catch seven of your chosen Pokémon – Emolga, Crabrawler, or Ducklett – and the reward an encounter with your choice
- Your radar – also known as the list of Pokémon in the ’Nearby’ window, accessed by tapping the box in the lower right corner of the map screen – will promote your chosen Pokémon to help find them faster
Though it will not result in additional spawns, you choice will temporarily help you find more of that Pokémon through the Nearby feature, as well as grant you an additional single encounter as part of your rewards.
In terms of what you should choose, it should be based on what you want more of, particularly if you want a shiny of that Pokémon. To clarify, the shiny odds won’t increase as part of this research – but by simply encountering more of that Pokémon, you are more likely to encounter a shiny as a result.
If you’re wondering why Emolga, Crabrawler, and Ducklett are the choices here, these are all recently added shinies as part of in-person Go Fest 2024 events earlier this year, so get more of the spotlight in the Global leg for those wanting to flesh our their shiny Pokédex.
Which Path offers the best chance to catch shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Go
Among the three paths in Pokémon GO’s “The Dawn of a New Discovery” quest-Emolga, Crabrawler, or Ducklett-none inherently offers a better chance to catch shiny Pokémon by default, as shiny odds are generally the same for wild encounters unless boosted by special events or research tasks. However, choosing the path that features Pokémon with higher spawn rates or that coincide with ongoing shiny-boosting events can improve your chances indirectly. For example, if an event or spotlight hour increases the spawn rate of one of these Pokémon, selecting that path will let you encounter more of them, thus increasing your chances to find a shiny. Outside of such events, the base shiny odds remain about 1 in 512 for wild Pokémon. The best shiny hunting methods overall involve participating in raid battles, special research events, or community days, where shiny rates can be as high as 1 in 10 or 1 in 20, far better than wild encounters. Therefore, pick the path that aligns with current or upcoming events boosting shiny rates for those specific Pokémon to maximize your shiny hunting potential.
How do Legendary Raids compare to Community Days for shiny odds
Legendary Raids and Community Days in Pokémon GO offer significantly better shiny odds compared to regular wild encounters, but they differ slightly in their rates. Legendary Raids typically have a shiny rate of about 1 in 20 (5%), meaning one shiny per twenty raid encounters on average. Community Days feature a shiny rate of approximately 1 in 25 (4%) for the featured Pokémon during the event window.
While Legendary Raids offer slightly better odds, Community Days provide the advantage of encountering large numbers of the same Pokémon in the wild, making shiny hunting more efficient due to volume and ease of access. Additionally, some special raid events or limited-time research events can boost shiny odds even further to around 1 in 10, but these are rarer and often require more effort or investment.
In summary, Legendary Raids have a marginally higher shiny rate (1/20) than Community Days (1/25), but Community Days allow for more frequent encounters, which can balance or even outweigh the slight difference in shiny odds depending on your play style and availability.
