Ready to unleash the ultimate power of Mega Rayquaza in Pokémon Go? The key lies in a rare and coveted item: the Meteorite. This elusive treasure lets you teach Rayquaza the devastating Dragon Ascent move, unlocking its Mega Evolution and turning it into a raid-dominating force. But how do you get your hands on a Meteorite? Whether by conquering Mega Rayquaza raids or completing special research quests during exclusive events, this guide will show you exactly how to secure this rare item and elevate your gameplay to legendary heights.
Initially exclusive to attendees at the London, Kyoto and New York Go Fest weekends before rolling out to players globally on Aug. 26, 2023, Rayquaza’s Mega Evolution has a twist – where it must learn a specific move first (Dragon Ascent) through the use of a unique item.
As with all Mega Evolutions, this is a temporary transformation, and still requires collecting Mega Energy from raids and other sources. It’ll also give you party a boost while active – making them useful for Community Day and other events.
How to teach Dragon Ascent to Rayquaza in Pokémon Go
To teach Dragon Ascent to Rayquaza in Pokémon Go, you first need to obtain a Meteorite, a rare item that can be acquired by defeating Mega Rayquaza in raids or completing specific research quests. Once you have a Meteorite, go to your Pokémon Storage, select the Rayquaza you want to Mega Evolve, and scroll down to its moveset. There, you will find the option to teach it Dragon Ascent by using the Meteorite. Confirm the action, and the move will replace one of Rayquaza’s current charged moves. After teaching Dragon Ascent, you will be able to Mega Evolve Rayquaza, provided you have collected 400 Mega Rayquaza Energy. Keep in mind that Meteorites are single-use items, so you will need a new one for each Rayquaza you want to Mega Evolve.
To Mega Evolve Rayquaza, you not only need enough Mega Energy, but the Pokémon also needs to learn a specific move – Dragon Ascent.
Teaching Dragon Ascent to Rayquazarequires the Meteorite item. When used, this will replace a Charged move; if you have just one move available, it’ll simply replace that, otherwise it’s worth unlocking a second Charged move so you have options in battle.

Like Evolution items, Meteorites are consumed upon use, and since they are rare, you have to think carefully about which Rayquaza you spent it on. Our suggestion – a shiny and / or one with strong stats!
How to get Meteorites in Pokémon Go
To get a Meteorite in Pokémon Go, you primarily need to participate in Mega Rayquaza raids or complete special research quests available during Mega Rayquaza events. Defeating Mega Rayquaza in a raid offers a chance to obtain a Meteorite, although the drop rate is quite rare, roughly around 1 in 50. Alternatively, completing timed or special research quests, such as the “Sky High” free special research, guarantees a Meteorite reward. These events are usually time-limited, so it’s important to take advantage of them when active. Once you have a Meteorite, you can use it to teach your Rayquaza the Dragon-type Charged Attack Dragon Ascent, which is essential for Mega Evolving Rayquaza, alongside collecting 400 Mega Rayquaza Energy from raids and other activities.
Meteorites first rolled out following during Go Fest 2023, and can currently be acquired in several ways:
- Timed Research during events: Mega Rayquaza will only appear during events (such as June 2024’s Elite Raid event), and will be accompanied by Timed Research which will offer at least one Meteorite as a reward.
- Rare drop from Mega Rayquaza raids: As well as from research, Meteorites can be rewarded from completing Mega Rayquaza raids, with a drop rate of around 1/30, according to the Silph Road subreddit.
Previous methods include:
- From free Go Fest 2023 Special Research: Logging in during the Go Fest Global event hours on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023 and completing the “short Special Research story” granted one free Meteorite.
- From paid Go Fest 2023 Special Research: For those who attended in-person events in London, Kyoto or New York, and / or paying for the paid Global research ticket could earn additional Meteorites as part of their tickets in Special Research.

After that, the availability of Meteorite is uncertain, but based on Niantic’s track record of previous unique forms and evolution rollouts, it’ll return as part of future Special Research or when Mega Rayquaza reappears in raids.
Meteorities won’t be missable, then, they’re just rare – and you could be waiting a while for the next chance if you don’t play on Aug. 27.
Mega Rayquaza bonuses
Mega Rayquaza in Pokémon Go offers several valuable bonuses when active. It boosts the damage dealt by Dragon, Flying, and Psychic-type Pokémon in raids and Gym battles. Additionally, players receive extra XP, Candy, and an increased chance of earning Candy XL when catching Pokémon of these types. As you Mega Evolve Rayquaza more often, its Mega Level rises, enhancing these bonuses further by reducing its rest period and Mega Energy cost, making it more efficient in battle.
As with other Mega Evolutions, Mega Rayquaza not only sees a boost to CP and power for the next eight hours, but also grants additional perks. These are:
- Extra XP and Candy when catching Dragon-, Flying- or Psychic- types, and increased chance of earning Candy XL.
- Attacks of fellow trainers during Raid or Gym battles will increase, especially if they are Dragon-, Flying- or Psychic- types.
You can boost these the more you Mega Evolve, with improvements across three stages: Base Level, High Level, and Max Level.
What else do we know about Meteorities, Dragon Ascent, and Mega Rayquaza in Pokémon Go?
Meteorites in Pokémon Go are special one-use items that allow you to teach Rayquaza the powerful Dragon-type Charged Attack, Dragon Ascent, which is essential for Mega Evolving Rayquaza into Mega Rayquaza. You can obtain Meteorites by defeating Mega Rayquaza in raids or completing specific research quests, though they are rare drops and not guaranteed from every raid. Once a Rayquaza knows Dragon Ascent, you can Mega Evolve it using 400 Mega Rayquaza Energy earned through raids, research, or walking with Rayquaza as your buddy. Dragon Ascent is a high-damage move that lowers Rayquaza’s Defense and Special Defense but is crucial for unlocking its Mega Evolution, making Mega Rayquaza a top choice in both PvE and PvP battles. To preserve legacy moves like Breaking Swipe, it’s recommended to unlock a second charged move before teaching Dragon Ascent with a Meteorite.
Though Mega Rayquaza is technically just another Mega Evolution, there are some observations and differences to be aware of:
- As well as learning Dragon Ascent, Mega Rayquaza requires 400 Mega Energy to evolve.
- Though Dragon Ascent will replace a Charged move, it’s by far and away Rayquaza’s most powerful attack. That said, as a Flying-type move, ideally you’d want a second Dragon-type move (such as Outrage or ideally legacy move Breaking Swipe) to go alongside.
- As with other Mega Raids, you will only catch the pre-evolved version of the Pokémon during the catch phase. These Raid encounters have a chance to be shiny, and Mega Evolving Rayquaza will adopt the same changed color scheme.
- Though Mega Rayquaza was technically able to be fought by non-ticket holders at location-specific Go Fest events in 2023, only those with tickets could earn Mega Energy after completing raids. This means for the vast majority of players, the Go Fest Global weekend in late August was their first chance to start earning some!
How can I maximize my chances of getting a Meteorite in Pokémon Go
To maximize your chances of getting a Meteorite in Pokémon Go, the best strategy is to actively participate in Mega Rayquaza raids and complete any available Special or Timed Research quests that reward Meteorites. Defeating Mega Rayquaza in raids offers a chance to obtain a Meteorite, but it is not guaranteed, so combining raid participation with research quest completion significantly improves your odds.
During special events like the Mega Rayquaza Special Raid event or Go Fest, Meteorites are more readily available through free timed research quests and elite raids scheduled at specific times, making it worthwhile to engage fully during these periods. Additionally, it is advisable to save at least one Meteorite for your best Rayquaza to avoid wasting this one-use item, as acquiring multiple Meteorites can be challenging due to their rarity.
In summary, maximize your Meteorite acquisition by:
-
Joining as many Mega Rayquaza raids as possible, especially during event raid hours.
-
Completing all related Special or Timed Research quests that offer Meteorites.
-
Staying alert for event announcements where Meteorites are rewarded.
-
Conserving Meteorites for your strongest Rayquaza to ensure efficient use.
This combined approach is the most effective way to secure Meteorites and unlock Mega Rayquaza’s full potential.
What are the most effective ways to increase my chances of earning a Meteorite
To increase your chances of earning a Meteorite in Pokémon Go, focus on these most effective methods:
-
Defeat Mega Rayquaza in raids: Participating in Mega Rayquaza raids is the primary way to get Meteorites, though the drop rate is low and not guaranteed. The more raids you join, the higher your cumulative chances.
-
Complete Special or Timed Research quests: These quests often reward Meteorites upon completion. For example, during Mega Rayquaza Special Raid events or Go Fest, free Timed Research quests are available that guarantee a Meteorite, making them a reliable source.
-
Take advantage of event-specific opportunities: Meteorites are more accessible during events like Mega Rayquaza Special Raid events and Go Fest, where raid schedules and research quests are designed to provide Meteorites.
-
Conserve Meteorites: Since Meteorites are one-use items to teach Rayquaza Dragon Ascent, use them wisely on your best Rayquaza to avoid needing multiple Meteorites, which are rare.
In summary, maximize your Meteorite acquisition by actively raiding Mega Rayquaza, completing all related research quests especially during events, and managing your Meteorite usage carefully to get the most out of this rare item.
