Spotlight Hour spotlights Popplio tonight-does a shiny version lurk among the spawns?
Just like the previous Alolan startersthat saw Spotlight Hours in the last few weeks, Popplio isn’t available shiny yet. Its shiny version probably won’t release until we get a Popplio Community Day in coming years. With the Chespin Community Day in January 2023, we’ve only started getting into Community Days for the Kalos region starters, meaning that Alolan starters are probably ways out.
Even so, it’ll be worth seeking out a Popplio with good IVs, as you can hold on to it and evolve it whenever Popplio Community Day does come along. Evolving Popplio into its final evolution, Primarina, will likely teach it Hydro Cannon, a powerful water-type move that is only learned by starter Pokémon.
Pokémon is about catching ’em all, and in Pokémon Go, that means catching every variant, including rare shiny versions of Pokémon. Every Tuesday in Pokémon Go, players will see a specific Pokémon spawning more frequently during Spotlight Hour, which runs from 6 p.m. to 6:59 p.m. local time. Spotlight Hour is your chance to load up on candy, a chance for high CP Pokémon, and, if you’re lucky, a shiny Pokémon.
Are shiny rates boosted during Spotlight Hour?
Shiny rates are not boosted during Spotlight Hour in Pokémon Go. These events increase the number of a specific Pokémon appearing in the wild, giving players more chances to encounter it, but the odds of finding a shiny version remain the same as usual. Unless Niantic specifically announces a shiny release tied to the event, players shouldn’t expect improved shiny odds during Spotlight Hour.
Shiny rates do not appear to be boosted during Spotlight Hours, based on data gathered by Pokémon community The Silph Road. However, the sheer number of Pokémon that spawn during the hourlong weekly event will give you an improved chance of clicking on a random shiny. The more Pokémon you click on, the more opportunity you have to catch a shiny Pokémon.
What can I do to attract more shiny Pokémon?
To attract more shiny Pokémon during Spotlight Hour, prompt field checks for weather-boosted spawns, use a Lure Module to increase overall sightings, and focus on prospects with higher shiny rates like starters and common wild spawns. Pair your play with a mix of quick catching, maximizing excellent throws, and short, efficient hunts to boost your odds without burning out.
Not much, unfortunately. It appears to be random chance. Shiny Pokémon catch rates are set by developer Niantic, and they are typically only boosted during special events like Community Days or Safari Zones, or in Legendary Raids. There are no consumable items that boost shiny Pokémon rates.
Where can I find a list of available shiny Pokémon?
Check the Pokémon Go in-game Pokédex, which shows shiny availability for each species with a sparkling icon next to eligible ones. Niantic’s official blog posts Spotlight Hour announcements that list featured shiny Pokémon. Community resources like The Silph Road or Pokémon Go Hub maintain up-to-date databases of all shiny-eligible Pokémon, updated after each new release. In-game events and research tasks also reveal shiny options through encounter previews.
When was shiny Popplio released in Pokémon Go
Shiny Popplio was released in Pokémon Go on August 31, 2024, during its Community Day event.
This marked the debut of its shiny form (a lighter blue variant), along with shiny Brionne and Primarina through evolutions, appearing in the wild with boosted spawn rates and higher shiny encounter odds from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time. Prior to this, as noted in earlier 2023 Spotlight Hour discussions, shiny Popplio was unavailable.
How to evolve shiny Popplio into Brionne and Primarina
Shiny Popplio evolves into shiny Brionne and Primarina using Popplio Candy, just like regular variants.
Evolution Requirements
Popplio requires 25 Popplio Candy to evolve into Brionne.
Brionne then needs 100 Popplio Candy (total 125 from Popplio) to become Primarina.
No special items, levels, or conditions are needed beyond candy.
Steps to Evolve
Open your Pokémon menu, select the shiny Popplio (or Brionne), and tap “Evolve” if you have enough candy.
During events like the August 31, 2024 Community Day, evolutions within a time window (e.g., 2-10 p.m. local) granted Primarina the exclusive move Hydro Cannon, but this bonus has expired.
Catch more Popplio, use Pinap Berries, set as Buddy, or convert Rare Candy to farm candy efficiently.
Shiny Confirmation
Evolving a shiny Popplio guarantees shiny Brionne and shiny Primarina, preserving the form through the line.
