’Memory of the Deep’ walkthrough in Avowed
The “Memory of the Deep” side quest in Avowed begins by speaking with Josep Abaccio at his farm in the Coastal Farms region or by encountering the Giftbearer at Lake Lacuna. Josep asks you to investigate why his revenants are disappearing, leading you to follow a trail of corpses to Lake Lacuna. There, you meet the Giftbearer, who reveals that a mysterious meteorite at the bottom of the lake is attracting the revenants. You must dive into the lake, retrieve the meteorite, and then decide whether to give it to Josep or the Giftbearer, each choice offering different rewards. After surfacing with the meteorite, you will face hostile revenants and decaying skeletons around the lake shore, making your escape or fight a critical part of the quest’s challenge.

“Memory of the Deep” can be a bit confusing because there are two possible places to start it. If you only talk to one of the NPCs, you might not even know the other exists or that there’s a choice to be made.
It’s easiest to start by talking to Josep Abaccio (and will give you more context about what happens).

You’ll find him in the Coastal Farms just a bit west of the Maxim’s Claim Party Camp where you started exploring the Emerald Stair. He’ll explain that his revenants keep wandering off and ask you to find them. He’ll point you to nearby Lake Lacuna and tell you to follow the line of corpses.

When you reach Lake Lacuna, you’ll meet the mysterious Giftbringer standing on the small dock. (Talking to him will give you the quest if you skipped Josep.) He’ll tell you that a shard of sky from the moon has fallen into Lake Lacuna and ask you to retrieve it.

There’s a narrow tunnel leading straight down in the center of the lake. Swim down to retrieve the mysterious meteorite.
When you surface, just like the Giftbearer warned, you’ll have to deal with a horde of angry skeletons and revenants. Clear them out, and then head south toward the Coastal Farms.
Should you give the meteorite to Josep or Giftbearer in Avowed?
In Avowed’s “Memory of the Deep” quest, deciding whether to give the Mysterious Meteorite to Josep or the Giftbearer depends on your priorities. Giving it to Josep rewards you immediately with the Chanter’s Panpipes, which summon a Phantom ally, and 550 gold, but tragically, Josep is later killed by his revenants due to the meteorite’s corrupting influence. Alternatively, giving the meteorite to the Giftbearer results in a safer outcome for Josep and grants you 550 gold plus, after resting and returning to the docks, the unique Statuette of Lament, which doubles your underwater breath-holding time. For maximizing rewards, players can first trade a memory with the Giftbearer and then give the meteorite to Josep to obtain both sets of rewards, though this leads to Josep’s death. If you prefer to keep everyone safe, giving the meteorite to the Giftbearer is the better choice.
With the moon rock in hand, you’ll have to decide who to hand it over to. Giving it to Josep gets you better rewards, so if you’re looking for the quick answer, go with that.
With a couple extra steps, though, you can give both of them something so no one is losing out. We’ll explain that in the third option below.

You’ll have two objectives and pins on your map: return to Josep or return to the Giftbearer.
- If you return the meteorite to Josep, he’ll give you 550 gold and the Chanter’s Panpipes – a unique amulet that summons a phantom to fight by your side. You’ll also get 4,590 XP. Whether or not he survives holding onto the meteorite is another question, but not your concern. You can also talk to Josep first and convince him not to take the rock from you, but you won’t get a reward.
- If you return the meteorite to the Giftbearer, you’ll only get 550 gold, 4,080 XP, and possibly(?) the goodwill of the gods.

- For the more complicated third option, head to the Giftbearer first. When he asks for the rock, choose the something different dialogue option. He’ll take a memory from you (it doesn’t matter which) and be satisfied. You can then take the meteorite to Josep for his rewards.
’Memory of the Deep’ extra reward
The “Memory of the Deep” quest in Avowed offers an extra reward beyond the primary quest outcomes. After completing the quest by giving the meteorite either to Josep Abaccio or the Giftbearer, players can unlock a hidden reward by resetting the area. To do this, fast travel to the Docks Beacon and then return to the small beach near where the Giftbearer was located. There, players will find the unique Statuette of Lament, a trinket that doubles the duration you can hold your breath underwater, providing a valuable advantage for underwater exploration and combat.
No matter who you give the rock to, there’s a secret reward after the quest is done.

You need to reset the area, so fast travel to the Docks Beacon and then return to the little beach where the Giftbearer was – head south from the beacon and take the first right along the road.

When you arrive, you’ll find the Statuette of Lament unique trinket and a Prayer to Ondra. Equipping the trinket lets you hold your breath for twice as long.
What secrets lie beneath Lake Lacuna in Avowed’s ’Memory of the Deep’ quest
Beneath the tranquil surface of Lake Lacuna in Avowed lies a mysterious meteorite, a shard of the moon Ionni Brathr, which draws revenants away from their usual haunts and holds a powerful, enigmatic essence. Diving into the lake’s depths, players uncover this celestial fragment entangled in twisting roots and vines, but retrieving it triggers a hostile response from undead enemies guarding the area. The meteorite’s discovery reveals a hidden conflict between two key figures-Josep Abaccio, a revenant farmer, and the enigmatic Giftbearer-each with their own designs for the artifact’s power, forcing players to choose who will claim the moonrock and shape the quest’s outcome.
What is the significance of the meteorite found at Lake Lacuna
The meteorite found at Lake Lacuna in Avowed is a fragment of Ionni Brathr, Eora’s shattered third moon, and is strangely warm despite having been underwater for years. This mysterious meteorite is significant because it appears to be the source attracting revenants to the lake, causing them to swarm violently around it. Its power is sought after by two key figures: Josep Abaccio, who wants to use it to control the revenants, and the Giftbearer, who has his own intentions. The player’s choice of whom to give the meteorite affects the quest outcome and rewards, making it a pivotal element in the “Memory of the Deep” quest.
