Maelle’s power reaches a sharp edge in Act 3, where her Virtuoso Stance transforms each encounter into calculated precision. This build refines her balance of grace and damage output, turning mid-game battles into showcases of flawless timing and ruthless control.
Best Maelle build overview
Maelle remains a versatile choice for Act 3 in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, pairing steady sustain with precise burst capabilities. This build emphasizes careful resource management, positioning Maelle to maximize her Virtuoso Stance uptime while delivering consistent damage through targeted abilities and timely utility. Prioritize gear that boosts crit chance and cooldown efficiency to maintain pressure, weave in supportive items for survivability, and exploit Maelle’s mobility to control team fights and objectives.
Maelle is a powerhouse, and you want to always build her to get the most of her damage potential. However, as you progress in the campaign for the first time, you lack the tools needed to make her the one-shot monster she can become. Even so, Maelle’s kit – with her Virtuoso Stance – makes her hit like a truck from the start. This build focuses on this stance and on keeping her alive long enough to land burst attacks with her, which is more than enough to finish the game.
The goal of this build is to give you a bit of versatility (and not suffer if you by any chances haven’t got a good weapon for it). To that end, we want to use one of two weapons available for Maelle, Medalum, which scales with Defense and Luck, or Melarum, which scales with Vitality and Luck. Additionally, you want to have other characters in the party who can apply Burn and Mark enemies. From Pictos to Luminas, this build prioritizes the ones that can either allow her to stay alive and increase her damage. With this build, once Maelle enters the Virtuoso Stance, you should be able to reliably do a boatload of damage to enemies. This is not the quickest build you will see for Maelle, but it is a highly reliable one.
Best weapon for Maelle

For this build, we have two weapon options: Melarum and Medalum.
Melarum
- Element: None
- Scaling: Vitality (B), Luck (C)
- Level 4 effect: Allies recover 20% Health on switching to Virtuose Stance
- Level 10 effect: Applies Shell when Health is above 80%
- Level 20 effect: Switch to Virtuose Stance when Health falls below 50%
Medalum
- Element: None
- Scaling: Defense (B), Agility (C)
- Level 4 effect: Start in Virtuose Stance
- Level 10 effect: In Virtuose Stance, every Burn applied is doubled
- Level 20 effect: In Virtuose Stance, Burn deals double damage
You want to run either of these two weapons since both of them scale with defensive stats. While Melarum’s damage increases when you raise Maelle’s Vitality, the same happens to Medalum, but with Defense. Having weapons that scale with these stats prevents you from having to choose between survivability or damage. Since staying alive in this game depends on your skill to dodge or parry, having enough defense or HP to take some hits and stay on your feet is a good backup plan.
Now, if you have both weapons, you should prioritize Medalum, mostly because you will always start in Virtuose Stance, speeding up the process. However, if you haven’t obtained it from the Gestral Arena, then your best option is Melarum. It gives some utility to the rest of the group, since you can heal them when switching to Virtuose Stance and get a free Shell early in the fight.
Best skills for Maelle
As expected from a build focused on using the Virtuose Stance, you will stick with those that have good synergy with it. At the same time, you must have a couple of tools for the downtime when you don’t have enough AP or haven’t switched to Virtuose yet.
Here are the best skills for this build:
- Swift Stride
- Last Chance
- Mezzo Forte
- Guard Up
- Percée
- Fleuret Fury
Swift Stride and Last Chance are your tools for switching to Virtuose Stance during the fight, but the moments to use each differ. Because the former requires the target to be under the Burning effect to switch Maelle’s stance, you must use your shots to pop the effect or wait for other characters to do so before using Swift Stride. Now, Last Chance leaves Maelle with 1 HP, which requires you to have a plan to heal her after she attacks.
When you don’t have anything else to do or don’t want to swap stances, you have two options. Guard Up applies shell to the party, reducing the damage taken by them for a few turns. You want this in your skill bar because, combined with the Powerful On Shell Luminas, you can buff Maelle while protecting the rest of the group. On the other hand, Mezzo Forte is your main best skill to keep the Virtuose Stance and build AP.
The last two skills are Percée and Fleuret Fury. Percée is your go-to option when you only have a couple of AP and the target has been marked. Before the end of Act 2, this will land a single hit that easily causes 9,999 damage. In the best scenario, you will actually use Fleuret Fury, which costs 6 AP. With this skill, Maelle performs three hits and remains in Virtuose Stance, while also having the chance to Break enemies. Unlike Percée, Fleuret Fury can get close to causing 20,000 damage because each hit will get from 5,000 to 7,000 damage.
Best Pictos for Maelle

When picking the best Pictor for Maelle, we went with the ones that would have important Luminas as well as Critical Rate.
- Immaculate
- Sweet Kill
- At Death’s Door
The first two Pictos on this list provide Speed, which will help Maelle stay around 500 total Speed and act quite early in each turn. In addition, all three have Critical Rate, allowing Maelle to have above 50% Critical Rate. Although you won’t be fishing for critical hits, increasing the chance of causing maximum damage is always a good idea.
When it comes to these Pictos’ Luminas, they follow the same rationale that defines this build. Immaculate buffs your damage by 30% until you get hit by an attack, which is great for early Percées. Sweet Kill restores 50% Health when you kill an enemy. Since Maelle is your main damage dealer, she will likely land the final blow in most situations. Lastly, At Death’s Door increases your damage by 50% if Maelle’s Health is below 10%. This Pictos has a perfect synergy with Last Chance, allowing you to get the most out of a break window or when other buffs align.
Best Luminas for Maelle
Many Luminas are situational, and you should definitely consider the kind of party composition you are running with Maelle or the enemies you are facing to pick your passive skills. However, in general, these are the Luminas you always want to have with Maelle,
- Painted Power
- Powerful On Shell
- SOS Shell
- Rewarding Mark
- Marking Shot
- Versatile
- Healing Share
- Burning Mark
You only obtain Painted Power at the end of Act 2, so for a long period, you won’t have acces to it, but once you do, Maelle can start landing hits that break the 9,999 damage threshold with her attacks. Powerful On Shell is crucial for keeping Maelle buffed, as she receives Powerful when Shell is applied. With SOS Shell, whenever she gets below 50%, Shell is applied, triggering the buff effect again.
Rewarding Mark is very useful because it gives you 2 AP when you deal damage to marked enemies (the targets you definitely want to focus on with this build). Marking Shot is also a good option when you have plenty AP to spend, since it gives you a 20% chance to apply Mark when using Free Aim Shots. Using it on burning enemies speeds up the process and allows Maelle to land more hits. The same applies to Burning Shots, which gives you a 20% chance to Burn enemies when using Free Aim Shot.
Since you will be fishing for Burn and Marks with your shots but may sometimes get nothing and end up low on AP (it happens!), Versatile is an excellent Lumina to have. It buffs the next Base Attack after a Free Aim Shot by 50%, allowing Maelle to deal decent damage even in the worst scenario for this build.
Healing Share is a support Lumina you want to run on all characters. Any character with this Lumina equipped will receive 15% of the healing other characters receive from their healing skills. This is a great tool to have constant healing and keep the party (and especially Maelle!) safe from dying.
How to play Maelle
Maelle shines in Act 3 through Virtuoso Stance, her strongest form for massive damage output. Apply Burn with Free Aim or basic attacks on foes, then use Swift Stride to enter Virtuoso Stance and chain high-impact moves like Sword Ballet, Stendhal, or Ferret Fury for break potential and follow-up strikes. Stack Speed above 300 and Critical Rate to 25-35 percent via Pictos, pairing her with fire-synergy allies to mark targets and amplify combos against bosses.

With this build, Maelle is your main damage dealer, meaning that the rest of the party’s work is to make her attacks more powerful and constant. At the beginning of a fight, there are two scenarios and your priorities will change depending on how things unfold.
In the first scenario, you start your turn firing one or two Free Aim Shots to see if you can apply Burn or Mark, if the enemy is not already affected by these statuses. If you succeed, use Swift Stride. Otherwise, consider using Mezzo Forte to build AP. With the rest of the party, apply Burn and Mark the enemy as needed.
Once it’s Maelle’s turn again, you are guaranteed to be able to switch to Virtuose Stance using Swift Stride at this point, and that’s exactly what you want. Have the next character heal or buff Maelle (or simply attack enemies), and with the third, make sure to apply Mark on the enemy. If you need to use Free Aim Shot, it’s not a problem. Get the mark and pass the turn. Do not trigger the Mark!
When it’s finally time to use Maelle, she will probably have at least 6 AP, so it’s time to use Fleuret Fury, your strongest attack. Even if you have one stack of Gradient Attack, do not use it, as it would waste the Mark. Afterwards, since Maelle remains in Virtuose Stance, you just need to repeat the Burn-Mark process and use Mezzo Forte to get more AP for her.
The second scenario occurs when, after using Free Aim Shot, you apply Mark and have at least 3 AP. In this case, you want to use Last Chance, followed by Percée. If you waste this initial Mark, you will miss a good chance to cause significant damage and fully benefit from the Immaculate buff.
Next, be sure to heal Maelle using the other characters and to start building the Burn and Mark effects again. From this point onward, you will be doing basically the same rotation described in the first scenario: Switch Maelle to Virtuose Stance then land a Fleuret Fury.
The flow of these two scenarios might be disrupted by a boss’s mechanics or situational mistakes, but in general, it is a simple rotation that will lead you to victory after some turns.
Best supporting party members for Maelle

To make this build work, there are only two characters you need in Maelle’s party: Lune and Verso. You want Lune as the healer and Burn applier, while Verso serves as the secondary damage dealer and is primarily responsible for applying Marks.
Lune has Immolation and Wildfire, both great Burn-applier skills, so you want her acting before Maelle whenever possible. In addition, Lune’s kit includes a single-target healing (Healing Light) and a group healing (Revitalization). The last one can apply Regen to all three party members if Lune has three fire stacks to consume. Considering you’ll cast Immolation and Wildfire every three turns, it’s almost certain Revitalization’s secondary effect will be cast.
Unlike Lune who focuses on keeping the party alive, Verso’s role is to boost Maelle’s damage through his Mark skills. Marking Shot and Defiant Strike are single-target abilities that always apply Mark. When possible, you want to use the latter because it also has high damage-dealing potential. Verso’s Perfect Recovery is a solid self-healing skill that can help keep Maelle alive because of the Healing Share Luminas, especially in situations when you can’t use Lune’s healing abilities.
