Guides

Epic Games has unleashed Godzilla onto the Fortnite island, spawning through mysterious portals at one of seven secret locations each match. With only a 40% chance of appearing per game, the race is on for players to be the first to enter the portal and transform into the colossal Kaiju, wielding devastating abilities like the Roar, Mighty Stomp, and Heat Ray to dominate opponents. Discover exactly where Godzilla can spawn and how to seize the monstrous power before anyone else in this ultimate guide to becoming Godzilla in Fortnite.

Here’s how to find and become Godzilla in Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 1.

Update (Jan. 30): Godzilla’s spawn rate has returned to a 100% appearance chance before it disappears this week.

When and where Godzilla spawns in Fortnite

Godzilla spawns in Fortnite through a special portal that has about a 20-40% chance to appear early in the match, typically between 1 to 3 minutes after the game starts. This portal, known as the Godzilla portal or Hollow Earth Rift Gate, spawns randomly at one of several fixed locations across the map, such as near the flower fields below Seaport City, Nightshift Forest, Lost Lake, Pumped Power, and areas north or south of Seaport City. When the portal opens, it is marked on the minimap and an alert notifies players, triggering a race to be the first to enter and transform into Godzilla. Only one player per match can become Godzilla, gaining powerful abilities but moving slowly, making the portal’s location and timing critical to securing the transformation.

To become Godzilla in Fortnite, you’ll need to find a portal and be the first player to jump inside. The appearance rate of the portal varies frequently, with the rate currently at 100%, according to Twitter. This was promised with the “Titan Takedown” event ending on Friday, Jan. 31 – so now’s your chance to finish any associated challenges before Godzilla disappears.

(For context, on Godzilla’s debut the chance was 20% – in other words, one in five matches – before doubling to 40% soon after, before receiving a time-limited boost to 100% over Jan 24-26.)

When the portal spawns, it’ll appear somewhere on the map as soon as the first Storm Circle begins to shrink. You’ll know when this happens as a security alert will pop up on the bottom half of your screen with the message “Godzilla Portal is open,” along with a ping with the portal’s location.

You can also open your map to see the portal’s location, which is marked with an icon of Godzilla:

As the portal spawns fairly early on in the game, you’ll have very little time to reach the portal if it doesn’t spawn in your vicinity, as there are a lot of players still alive. If it spawns far away from you, your best bet is to hoard as much ammo as you can to take Godzilla down.

To help with becoming Godzilla, the community has worked out the portal willspawn in one of seven specific spots. Though useful in that you can position yourself near one of these locations, they are spread out just enough that you still won’t get there in time if it’s not in the cluster closest to you. Still – if you’re having particularly bad luck becoming Godzilla, this could help.

On the bright side, if you don’t become Godzilla, there are a handful of quests you can complete:

  • Acquire Godzilla’s Medallion by doing the most damage to him
  • Hit Godzilla using a Quad Launcher or Rail Gun
  • Dash with Godzilla’s Fragment
  • Search Monarch’s Supply Drop

The best way to rack up damage is to shoot the glowing spikes along Godzilla’s back. This will deal bonus damage, and shoot you up the damage charts. To check if you’re dealing the most damage against Godzilla, look at the “Damage Inflicted” bar beneath Godzilla’s health bar.

How to play as Godzilla in Fortnite

To play as Godzilla in Fortnite, you need to be the first player to enter a special Godzilla portal that randomly spawns at the start of certain matches. When the portal appears, you’ll see an alert on your screen saying “Godzilla portal is open,” and a Godzilla icon will show up on your map. Rush to the portal quickly-using vehicles if possible-because only one player can enter and transform into Godzilla per match. Once transformed, you become a massive monster with powerful abilities: a Roar that reveals nearby enemies, a Mighty Stomp attack to damage and knock back foes, and a Heat Ray for ranged damage. Playing as Godzilla gives you superhuman health and the chance to dominate the map, but other players will team up to try to take you down.

After you enter the portal, you’ll become Godzilla and gain three abilities:

  • Roar – Unleash a roar that reveals nearby players
  • Mighty Stomp – Launch your enemies as you stomp the ground.
  • Heat Ray – Fire a laser capable of destroying players and structures.

When and where exactly do Godzilla portals appear in Fortnite

Godzilla portals in Fortnite spawn as soon as the first Storm Circle begins to shrink, typically around 3 to 3 minutes 45 seconds into the match, triggering an on-screen alert saying “Godzilla Portal is open” along with a ping marking its location. These portals appear at one of seven fixed locations on the Chapter 6 Season 1 map, including areas near Seaport City, Hopeful Heights, Lost Lake, Masked Meadows, Nightshift Forest, Pumped Power, and another spot beside Seaport City. Only one portal spawns per match, and players must be the first to enter it to transform into Godzilla. The portal is visually distinctive with a glowing, swirling blue and orange rift and emits a faint roar sound to help players locate it.
