How to join the Thieves Guild in Oblivion Remastered
To join the Thieves Guild in Oblivion Remastered, start by heading to the Imperial City and reading one of the Gray Fox wanted posters scattered around. This will unlock the Gray Fox as a conversation topic, allowing you to question locals who will eventually direct you to the Waterfront District. There, raise the disposition of a beggar until they reveal the secret midnight meeting at the Garden of Dareloth. Alternatively, you can get arrested for theft and after serving time, a guild member will invite you to the meeting. Arrive at the Garden of Dareloth at midnight and speak to Armand Christophe to begin your initiation quest and officially join the guild.
Oblivion Remastered presents several ways to learn about the Thieves Guild, some more complicated than others.
- You can examine wanted posters in the Imperial City to learn about the Gray Fox, and then ask two nearby guards about him to learn that the Waterfront District is an area of interest.
- You could also get sent to jail for stealing or trying to pick someone’s pocket. The next time you rest after getting out of prison, Myvryna Avrano, a Gray Fox disciple, appears next to you with an invitation to join the guild. The invitation directs you to the Waterfront District as well, and it kicks off the “Finding the Thieves Guild” quest.
- Or you can just go to the southern part of the Waterfront District at 11 p.m. and wait for the Doyen, Armand Christophe, to show up and start the initiation ceremony. The event happens regardless of how much you know about it or if you pick up the associated quest, so if you’re in a hurry, this is the best way to get started.
Two other would-be initiates show up, and Armand explains what he wants you all to do: steal a book from someone called Amantius Allectus. He provides no other information about where to look, but the house in question is in the Temple District. Leave the Waterfront District, and turn right once you enter the Temple District.
Follow the path along the wall, and you’ll see a door on your left. Enter it. Once you’re inside, look to the room’s right wall for the desk. Investigate it, and grab the book. There’s no lockpicking mini-game required for this quest, and it doesn’t matter if you picked a stealthy class or sneaky race.
If you get lost, follow Methredhel. She heads directly for the target. If she’s getting too far ahead, you can attack her with or without a weapon to slow her down. Despite Armand’s plea not to kill each other, you can’t actually harm Methredhel even if you hit her with an axe, and no one remembers after the fact, either.
Leave the house, and return to Armand to officially join the Thieves Guild. It’s possible that a guard apparently blessed with the ability to see through walls will accuse you of theft as you leave. He’s courteous enough not to murder or arrest you in the middle of a conversation, though, so if you make it back to Armand, the Doyen can take care of your bounty for half of the stated price and smooth everything over.
How to start Thieves Guild quests in Oblivion Remastered
To start the Thieves Guild quests in Oblivion Remastered, head to the Imperial City Waterfront District and examine a Wanted Poster for the Gray Fox, usually found near the lighthouse. Then, talk to a beggar in the area, such as Puny Ancus, and raise their disposition to around 70-80 to get information about the Gray Fox and the guild. This will lead you to the Garden of Dareloth, a hidden meeting spot in the Waterfront District, where you must arrive at midnight. There, speak with Armand Christophe to begin the initiation quest “May the Best Thief Win,” which involves stealing a diary from Amantius Allectus as a test to join the guild.
The point of joining the Thieves Guild is to steal things, so naturally, all the guild quests are about that. You also get access to fences, shady merchants who sell the goods you steal from others, and can pay beggars in any city for information about potential marks. You only have one fence to start with, Ongar in Bruma. Sell him 50 gold worth of goods to start picking up more guild quests.
The only wrinkle in all this is if you plan to do the Mages Guild questline as well. One of the Thieves quests has you robbing a mage, but he’s unhappy about it and fights back. If you kill him while being a Mage Guild member, you’ll get kicked out for murdering a colleague. You can buy your way back in, but there are better uses for your money.
What secret methods unlock the Thieves Guild in Oblivion Remastered
There are several secret methods to unlock and join the Thieves Guild in Oblivion Remastered:
-
Get caught stealing and serve jail time: Commit a crime, get arrested, and choose to serve your sentence rather than paying a fine or escaping. After your release, you will be approached by Myvryna Arano, who invites you to the Thieves Guild’s midnight meeting in the Waterfront District, starting the “Finding the Thieves Guild” quest.
-
Find and read wanted posters of the Gray Fox: These posters are scattered around the Imperial City. Reading one unlocks the Gray Fox conversation topic, which leads you to question homeless NPCs in the Waterfront District. They will reveal the secret meeting location at the Garden of Dareloth, where you can join the guild at midnight.
-
Talk to City-Swimmer in Bravil: This Argonian NPC can provide information about the Thieves Guild and the Gray Fox, leading you to the secret meeting place and quest.
-
Wait for Armand Christophe to arrive at midnight in the Waterfront District: Regardless of prior knowledge, Armand will appear at the Garden of Dareloth at midnight to initiate the guild joining process, making this the quickest way if you want to start immediately.
Once you attend the secret meeting and speak with Armand Christophe, you will receive a trial quest to steal a journal from Amantius Allectus without killing him, which upon completion grants you full membership in the Thieves Guild.
Is stealing the journal from Electus the only way to join the guild
Stealing Amantius Allectus’ diary is the core trial to join the Thieves Guild in Oblivion Remastered, but it’s not the only challenge involved. After attending the secret midnight meeting in the Garden of Dareloth and speaking with Armand Christophe, you enter a contest against two other thieves to be the first to steal the diary without killing anyone. While the diary theft is the key quest, you can obtain the diary in different ways: either by beating the other competitors to it, waiting for one of them (Methredhel) to steal it and then pickpocketing it from her, or waiting for the diary to appear in her house if you miss the initial opportunity. The competition and the diary theft are essential steps to gain full membership, so effectively, stealing the diary-by any of these means-is the only way to officially join the guild.
