Should you choose Fairfield or Westport in The Outer Worlds 2?

Choosing between Fairfield and Westport in The Outer Worlds 2 comes down to your gameplay style and the consequences you want to face. Fairfield offers a more straightforward approach with clearer rewards but may lead to heightened conflict in the region. Westport provides a nuanced path with potential allies and unique story developments but requires careful navigation of faction tensions. Weighing these options carefully will shape your experience and impact the broader narrative of the Vox Relay Station quest.

As part of “The Saboteur of Paradise” main quest, you must explore the Vox Relay Station on Paradise Island. At the end of this quest, interacting with De Vries’ terminal inside the safe room will trigger a fail-safe system. The entire Vox Relay Station will launch into the air, and it’s up to you to determine where it lands.

Although the quest objective instructs you to escape the station as quickly as possible, there’s actually no time limit, so feel free to think things over, speak with your companions, and collect all the loot. Once you leave the Vox Relay Station, though, your choice will be permanent.

The Vox Relay Station’s current target, which is the town of Fairfield by default, is displayed on a big monitor. If you wish to change it before you escape, pull this handle beneath the monitor:

Beware that changing the target is permanent, so if you switch the target to Westport, you can’t change back to Fairfield. Here’s an overview of all the options and what will happen if you pick them:

  • Drop the Vox Relay Station on Fairfield – This is the default setting, so if you escape the station without changing the settings, Fairfield will be destroyed. All buildings and NPCs shall be permanently covered in rubble, preventing any shopping or questing in this area (outstanding Fairfield quests will disappear). The only resident to survive is Ethel, who’s vital to Inez’ companion quest. Your reputation with Auntie’s Choice will drop by 10 points.
  • Drop the Vox Relay Station on Westport – The entire town shall be wiped out, including Hogarth, which means you won’t be able to save the people of Westfield or complete “The Saga of the Malfunctioning Mechanicals” if you haven’t done so already. However, Zeb, who is needed for Niles’ companion quest, will survive. Your reputation with the Protectorate drops by 10 points.
  • Set destination: Space – Doing so will save both Fairfield and Westport, but it requires a hacking level of 4. If you don’t meet this requirement and have already triggered the fail-safe, it’s no longer an option. You’d have to get back to a previous safe, upgrade your hacking, and explore the Vox Relay Station again.
  • See if hitting it does anything – This will send the Vox Relay Station into space, but it requires the Lucky Trait. If you didn’t pick this trait during character creation, you won’t be able to use this option.

If you’re facing the choice between Fairfield and Westport, you might want to think practically: Since there are more shops and NPCs in Fairfield, it’s more useful than Westport. If you’d like to base your choice on faction alignment, remember that Fairfield belongs to Auntie’s Choice (the consumer cult) while Westport is held by theProtectorate (the Sovereign worshippers).

If you’re looking for arguments to side with either faction, you might argue that crushing Fairfield frees the people of Westport from Auntie’s Choice invaders, or that hitting Westport destroys a town that was crumbling anyway.

Finally, if you took Inez with you on your Vox Relay Station mission, she’ll ask you to save Fairfield. If you fail to do so, she’ll be upset and likely leave your company.

How to save Fairfield and Westport from the Vox Relay Station in The Outer Worlds 2

Deciding to save Fairfield and Westport from the Vox Relay Station in The Outer Worlds 2 involves careful planning and strategic choices. Focus on gathering intelligence, aligning with key factions, and completing critical quests to disable the station’s influence without causing collateral damage. Balancing diplomacy and combat will help you protect both towns while preserving the delicate political landscape.

Luckily, there are three ways to save the citizens of both Fairfield and Westport. First, there’s the “see if hitting it does anything” option, but as mentioned above, you can only use this option if your character already has the Lucky Trait. However, if you don’t already have the trait, we wouldn’t recommend restarting your playthrough to get it.

Secondly, you can choose to reroute the Vox Relay Station to space. As mentioned above, you’ll need a level 4 hacking skill and Bypass Shunt to do so. Here’s how to meet these requirements:

  • Level 4 hacking skill: Every time you level up, you may spend two skill points, so if your current hacking level is zero, you must level up two times and devote all skill points to hacking to meet the requirement. If you triggered the Vox Relay failsafe already, go back to an earlier save file.
  • Obtain a Bypass Shunt: Found as random loot and sold by vending machines. There are two such machines in the Vox Relay Station itself.

A more time-consuming way to rescue both Fairfield and Westport without sending the Vox Relay Station into space, is to convince the people of Westport to move to Fairfield. This requires the following steps:

  1. Speak with Minister Milverstreet in Fairfield, and accept the “The Brain Benders of Auntie’s Choice” quest.
  2. Speak with Vigilant Hogarth in Westport. Try to convince him to leave – it won’t work, but it’ll trigger the sabotage objectives.
  3. Sabotage Westport: Convince the doctor (Rowe), the fellow with the purple face outside (Charlton), and the mechanic at the gate (Pinckney) to leave for Fairfield. Hack the loudspeaker system and water supply in the two small buildings on the north side of town. Just outside Westport, sabotage the generator.
  4. Once that’s done, speak with Hogarth again and tell him that everything’s falling apart, and his people must leave. If you want Hogarth to live, just repeat that his people need him until he’s convinced.

Now you can safely destroy Westport – the Vox Relay Station will still crush the town, but nobody will die since there’s no one left. Of course, this quest trajectory also unlocks the possibility to send the Vox Relay Station to Fairfield, just after the people of Westport have moved in. Something to keep in mind for your supervillian playthrough.

Best option to keep both towns safe in Vox Relay quest

The best option to keep both Fairfield and Westport safe in the Vox Relay quest in The Outer Worlds 2 is to send the Vox Relay Station into space. This can be done by having a hacking skill level of 4 and possessing a Bypass Shunt, allowing you to use the Vox Secure Connection Interface to safely launch the relay away from the planet. Choosing this option preserves both towns, keeps all NPCs and side quests accessible, maintains faction reputations, and prevents the loss of your companion Inez.

If you do not have the required hacking skill or Bypass Shunt, there is a labor-intensive alternative: you can evacuate the residents of Westport by completing the quest “The Brain Benders of Auntie’s Choice” and convincing the residents to relocate to Fairfield. After evacuation, you can safely drop the Vox Relay Station on Westport with no casualties. This allows Fairfield to remain intact and avoids the severe consequences of destroying Fairfield. However, this option will lock you out of future quests in Westport.

Avoid dropping the Vox Relay on Fairfield directly because it results in complete destruction of the town, failure of all related quests, permanent loss of Inez, and significant reputation penalties.

In summary:

  • Best: Send Vox Relay into space (Hack 4 + Bypass Shunt).

  • Alternative: Evacuate Westport residents, then drop Vox Relay on Westport (no casualties, Westport quests locked).

  • Worst: Drop on Fairfield (town destroyed, quests lost, companion lost).

This decision greatly impacts game progression, companions, and faction relations, so plan accordingly based on your character’s skills and quest completions.

How to get Hack 4 quickly before the Vox Relay choice

To quickly get Hack 4 before the Vox Relay choice in The Outer Worlds 2, it is recommended to invest your early skill points into the Hack skill as you level up, since you will likely have several hours before reaching the mission. Focus on raising Hack to level 4 during your exploration and side quest completions on the first planet. This preparation is important because having Hack 4 (or the Lucky trait) is key to avoiding a no-win scenario in the Vox Relay quest, allowing you to send the relay into space and save both Fairfield and Westport. Prioritize skill points into Hack over other skills to reach this threshold in time. Additionally, seek out side quests that reward skill points and look for ways to boost your hacking ability before the mission.

In summary:

  • Prioritize using skill points to raise Hack to 4 early in the game.

  • Engage in side quests to gain levels and skill points before reaching the Vox Relay.

  • This allows the best outcome in the Vox Relay quest by sending it into space and keeping both towns safe.

This strategic skill investment ensures the best choice without forcing you to destroy either town in the quest.
