Pokémon GO’s Adventure Week: Taken Over event is back, bringing an intense Team GO Rocket takeover and a thrilling Special Research quest where you’ll face off against Giovanni himself to capture the elusive Shadow Cresselia. Dive into this dark adventure filled with shadow Pokémon, epic battles, and exclusive rewards that will test your skills and strategy like never before.

This Team Rocket challenge is actually tacked on to the “Adventure Week” event (as you can tell by the name), so you’ll get some fossil Pokémon as rewards for completing the research.

These Giovanni quests started back in 2019 with “A Troubling Situation.” If “Adventure Week: Taken Over” is not appearing for you, first clear the most recent Giovanni quest in your quest log – the previous one was March 2023’s “It’s a Rocket World” – to allow this new quest to become available.

’Adventure Week: Taken Over’ Shadow Cresselia Special Research and rewards

The “Adventure Week: Taken Over” Special Research in Pokémon Go offers players a Team GO Rocket-themed quest running from August 8 to September 3, 2024. By completing a series of five steps that include catching Pokémon, purifying Shadow Pokémon, defeating Team GO Rocket Grunts and Leaders, and ultimately battling Giovanni, players can earn valuable rewards such as Stardust, XP, fossil Pokémon encounters like Kabuto and Omanyte, a Super Rocket Radar, and an Aerodactyl encounter. The highlight reward is the opportunity to capture Shadow Cresselia, a rare Shadow Legendary Pokémon, by using the Super Rocket Radar to locate Giovanni. Additional rewards include Fast TMs and large amounts of Stardust, making this event a significant challenge and reward for trainers dedicated to battling Team GO Rocket.

  • Catch 20 Pokémon (5 Pinap Berries)
  • Purify 5 shadow Pokémon (10 Great Balls)
  • Defeat 6 Team Go Rocket Grunts (3 Mysterious Components)

Rewards: 2,000 XP, 1,000 Stardust, Omanyte encounter

’Adventure Week: Taken Over’ step 3 of 5

  • Defeat the Team Go Rocket Leader Arlo (2,500 XP)
  • Defeat the Team Go Rocket Leader Cliff (2,500 XP)
  • Defeat the Team Go Rocket Leader Sierra (2,500 XP)

Rewards: 2,500 XP, 1,500 Stardust, 1 Super Rocket Radar

’Adventure Week: Taken Over’ step 4 of 5

  • Find the Team Go Rocket Boss (10 Hyper Potions)
  • Battle the Team Go Rocket Boss (10 Ultra Balls)
  • Defeat the Team Go Rocket Boss (6 Max Revives)

Rewards: 3,000 XP, 2,000 Stardust, Aerodactyl encounter

You’ll be able to catch the final Shadow Pokémon in Giovanni’s team once you have used your Super Rocket Radar. This varies depending on when you play the quest; from August 2024 until when the next Giovanni quest debuts, this will be Shadow Cresselia.

  1. Claim the Adventure Week: Taken Over Special Research after the event starts.

  2. Complete the first few steps by catching Pokémon, purifying Shadow Pokémon, and defeating Team GO Rocket Grunts to earn rewards and progress.

  3. Defeat the Team GO Rocket Leaders Arlo, Cliff, and Sierra to obtain a Super Rocket Radar.

  4. Use the Super Rocket Radar to locate and battle Giovanni, the Team GO Rocket boss.

  5. After defeating Giovanni, you will get a guaranteed encounter with Shadow Cresselia, which you can then catch.

This Special Research quest has five steps in total, with various rewards including fossil Pokémon encounters and Stardust. The Shadow Cresselia encounter is available from the moment you defeat Giovanni until the next Giovanni mission replaces it. Note that Shadow Cresselia is not currently shiny in Pokémon GO.
