Pokemon GO Whispers in the Woods Masterwork Research Tasks and Rewards

Guides

Unlock a rare chance to add Shiny Celebi to your Pokémon Go collection-if you’re quick, crafty, and up for a challenge-as the “Whispers in the Woods” Masterwork Research tasks and rewards test your dedication while promising legendary rewards.

From there, the Masterwork Research will appear in Special Research tab, where there is no time limited to completing the tasks – which is just as well, as many steps are time gated around daily activities.

’Whispers in the Woods’ Masterwork Research steps

The ‘Whispers in the Woods’ Masterwork Research in Pokémon Go offers a challenging but rewarding path to earning Shiny Celebi, with tasks designed to be completed over time rather than in a single session. Early steps require players to achieve the Platinum Johto Medal by catching all Johto-region Pokémon, capture 251 Pokémon from Johto, and catch 100 different species, followed by daily and type-based tasks such as catching Grass-type Pokémon and maintaining streaks over several days. While the research is not time-limited after purchase, these requirements ensure a long-term commitment for those aiming to add Shiny Celebi to their collection.

Once you’ve started the “Whispers in the Woods” Masterwork Research, there is no time limit to completing the following steps:

’Whispers in the Woods’ step 1 of 5

  • Earn the platinum Johto medal (51 Ultra Balls)
  • Catch 251 Pokémon originally discovered in the Johto region (1 Poffin)
  • Catch 100 different species of Pokémon (2,510 Stardust)

Rewards: 2,510 XP, 1 Mossy Lure, 2,510 Stardust

’Whispers in the Woods’ step 2 of 5

  • Catch 25 grass-type Pokémon (1 Lure Module)
  • Catch a Pokémon 7 days in a row (51 Ultra Balls)
  • Catch a Pokémon on 21 different days (251 XP)

Rewards: 2,510 XP, 3 Rare Candy, 2,510 Stardust

’Whispers in the Woods’ step 3 of 5

  • Catch 25 psychic-type Pokémon (1 Incense)
  • Catch a Pokémon 7 days in a row (51 Ultra Balls)
  • Catch a Pokémon on 21 different days (151 XP)

Rewards: 2,510 XP, 1 Poffin, 2,510 Stardust

Assuming you begin step 3 on the day this research was released (Thursday, July 18), the earliest you can unlock step 4 onwards is Wednesday, Aug. 7.

More coming soon!

Thanks to LeekDuck for helping flesh out the above steps.

Why can’t I buy the ’Whispers in the Woods’ Masterwork Research?

Some players may find themselves unable to purchase the ’Whispers in the Woods’ Masterwork Research ticket in Pokémon Go. This is because the research is only available to those who have not previously started or completed the “Distracted by Something Shiny” Special Research, which originally rewarded a shiny Celebi. The restriction is in place to prevent players from owning more than one shiny mythical Celebi through research rewards.

For some players, the option to purchase the “Whispers in the Woods” ticket from the in-game shop is not possible.

That’s because this Masterwork Research is only available to those who did not start the “Distracted by Something Shiny” Research, which previously rewarded shiny Celebi back in Dec. 2020. This is in place to prevent players from owning more than one of a given shiny mythical Pokémon.

How close am I to completing the ‘Whispers in the Woods’ research

To determine how close you are to completing the ‘Whispers in the Woods’ research, you’ll need to check your current progress through its five main steps and see where you are in each set of tasks. The research is designed to take a significant amount of time due to time-gated and cumulative challenges, such as catching Pokémon on multiple days or reaching high-level milestones.

Here’s a summary of the steps (with key tasks for each):

  • Step 1:

    • Earn the platinum Johto medal

    • Catch 251 Pokémon originally discovered in the Johto region

    • Catch 100 different species of Pokémon

  • Step 2:

    • Catch 25 grass-type Pokémon

    • Catch a Pokémon 7 days in a row

    • Catch a Pokémon on 21 different days

  • Step 3: (Details are less widely documented, but may involve more daily or cumulative tasks)

  • Step 4:

    • Reach Level 40

    • Spin 251 PokéStops or Gyms

    • Complete 100 Field Research tasks

  • Step 5: (Final step, leads to Shiny Celebi encounter; exact tasks not always listed publicly)

If you know which step you are on and which tasks you have completed within it, you can estimate how close you are to finishing. Remember, some requirements-like catching Pokémon on 21 different days-require real-world time and cannot be rushed.

If you share which step you’re currently on and which tasks are incomplete, I can help you calculate your progress more precisely.

How many steps of the ’Whispers in the Woods’ research have I completed so far

I don’t have access to your in-game progress or a record of which steps you have completed for the ‘Whispers in the Woods’ research. However, the research consists of five main steps, each with several challenging and often time-gated tasks.

To find out how many steps you have completed, open Pokémon Go, go to your Special Research tab, and look for “Whispers in the Woods.” The step number you are currently on will be displayed at the top (for example, “Step 2 of 5” or “Step 3 of 5”). If you tell me which step you see, I can help you estimate your remaining tasks and progress.
