The rope gun is your key to mastering zipline travel in Sons of the Forest, but finding it isn’t simple. Hidden deep inside a dark, creature-infested cave, this powerful tool can change how you explore the island-if you manage to survive long enough to claim it.
Some of the caves in Sons of the Forest will require you to use the rope gun to zipline into deeper areas. The rope gun can be used to create ziplines to a higher or lower area, and it can be used to ride those ziplines as well. However, to get the rope gun in Sons of the Forest, you’ll have to explore yet another cave. Read on to find out which cave to enter and learn where to find rope and zipline materials in Sons of the Forest.
As always, prepare yourself with weapons, food, and water, as there will be a lot of enemies inside the cave.
Where to find the rope gun in Sons of the Forest
In the rope gun cave on the western edge of the island, look for a rocky chamber reached through a deep cave network; the rope gun sits in an open crate at the top of the final drop, just before the exit to the zipline. Use the zipline to descend to the lower caverns and continue toward the shovel.

- Travel to the rope gun cave shown in the annotated map above. The cave is to the west of the snowy mountains on a path next to a lake.
- Enter the cave and proceed forward until the cave opens up to a large room. This room will have many cave cannibals, so prepare to fight a lot of enemies.
- Stick to the left of the cave to find an opening to a new pathway, and follow the path until you reach a passageway that is blocked by a mutant.
- Pick up the time bomb on the floor to the right of the blocked passage, and throw it at the mutant to open the entrance.
- Continue forward through the cave until you reach the first fork in the road. The left path will lead to the rope gun, but the right path will lead to a page that will provide a little lore.
- Take the left path and move through the cave until you reach another fork in the road. The left path will lead to a dead end with a few materials available to pick up, and the right path will lead to the rope gun.
- Follow the right path until you reach a cliff witha rope gun in a briefcase.
- Collect the rope gun and use it on the zipline to reach the exit of the cave.
How to use the rope gun in Sons of the Forest
Equip the rope gun from your inventory and aim at a distant surface or ledge to fire it, setting one end of a zipline where a white dot appears on screen. Craft zipline rope by combining one rope with a printed grappling hook, then load it as ammo into the gun before shooting the second end to complete the line. Hold the interact key while facing the zipline to grab and ride it across gaps or elevations, with a maximum range of 150 meters before it breaks.

The rope gun has two purposes in Sons of the Forest:
- Creates ziplines that reach higher or lower elevations
- Lets you ride those ziplines
Ziplines can be created by equipping the rope gun, then shooting it to a point on the environment; this will create one of the ends of the zipline. (A white dot will appear on the screen when equipped showing you where the zipline will be placed.) After the first point is placed, shoot the rope gun again to place the other end of the zipline. You’ll need zipline rope, which can be created by combining one rope and one printed grappling hook. Check the next section to learn where you can find a nearby 3D printer and camp to find rope.
To ride the zipline, simply interact with it by holding the “E” key.
How to get grappling hooks in Sons of the Forest
Grappling hooks in Sons of the Forest are printed at 3D printers inside bunkers, such as the one near the cave with the rope gun. Use the computer beside the printer to select them as the build option, which requires 100 ml of resin to produce two hooks. Combine a printed grappling hook with one rope to craft zipline rope for the rope gun.

Grappling hooks must be created at a 3D printer, which can be found in a few bunkers around the map. A bunker with a 3D printer, labeled on annotated map in the image above, can be found near the entrance to the cave with the rope gun. Inside the bunker, interact with the computer beside the 3D printer to switch the build to the grappling hooks which require 100 ml of resin to create two.
Where to find rope in Sons of the Forest
Rope appears on hanging lines in caves near maintenance rooms, often beside yellow boxes or workbenches. Players gather it by interacting with these strands, which respawn over time for repeated collection. Construction sites on the surface sometimes hold small amounts amid scattered debris.

Rope can be found in caves, camps, bunkers, and random containers scattered around the map in Sons of the Forest. There are a few cannibal camps that contain multiple ropes near a few of the spawn points and the Rope Gun cave. Check out the annotated map above to find a few of the nearby cannibal camps.
How to get the Stun Baton in the same cave
The Stun Baton is an early-game melee weapon in Sons of the Forest, found right outside the entrance to the same cave (Cave D) where the Rope Gun is located, on the western side near the interconnected lakes.
Exact Location
From your spawn or crash site, head to the cave marked by a boarded-up entrance and ammo crates. Before entering, follow the nearby stream left (downstream) to a small waterfall-it’s stuck in a pile of skulls at the base of the water in a shallow pool.โ
How to Use
Pick it up with E; it’s battery-powered. Click for standard blunt attacks, or hold left-click for a stunning AOE shockwave effective against cannibals and fingers (drains battery, recharge via batteries).
Tips
Grab it first for cave defense-birds and squirrels nearby shock themselves on it pre-pickup. It’s ideal prep for the Rope Gun run inside, paired with light, meds, and armor.โโ
How to get Stun Gun Ammo in Sons of the Forest
Stun Gun ammo in Sons of the Forest is a rare, non-craftable resource used to fire the ranged Stun Gun weapon (distinct from the melee Stun Baton discussed earlier).โโ
Primary Sources
Search supply crates (black and orange boxes) at campsites, cannibal villages, helicopter crash sites near spawn, caves, and points of interest like military outposts. It’s randomly generated alongside other ammo types, so check floors and tents frequently.โ
Respawn Exploit
Loot crates near a save spot (e.g., crash site tents), save your game, exit and reload-the containers refill with potential Stun Gun ammo. Repeat as needed for more supply.โโ
Usage Notes
Reload with R after each shot; it’s effective for stunning cannibals (15-20 seconds) but shorter on mutants. Stock up before heavy combat since it’s scarcer than basic ammo.
