The Outer Worlds 2 Character Appearance Customization and Gameplay FAQ Guide

Guides

In The Outer Worlds 2, your choices don’t just shape the story-they shape you. But can you actually change the way your character looks once the game begins? Here’s what we know about customization, cosmetic options, and whether second thoughts about your spacefarer’s style are allowed.

How to change your appearance in The Outer Worlds 2

In The Outer Worlds 2, you can change your character’s appearance after the initial creation, allowing for greater customization throughout your journey. The game offers options to modify features such as hairstyle, facial structure, and skin tone via in-game menus or through specific NPCs and terminals. This flexibility helps you keep your character’s look fresh and aligned with your evolving playstyle.

Once you’ve started a new game and finished the initial character creation, you can no longer change your appearance in The Outer Worlds 2. Although there is an opportunity to respec your skill points and perks following the first mission, “A Cause Worth Killing For,” this doesn’t include anything cosmetic.

So, if you’d like to lose an arm and a leg, you’ve got to do so upon starting a new game. Based on our experience, we haven’t run into any hairdressers, plastic surgeons, or magical appearance-changing mirrors, so your hairstyle, face type, and body type will be permanent.

Of course, you can still wear a new body armor to sport a different look, or don a fancy helmet. If you go to “Settings” and then “Gameplay,” you also get the option to hide or show your helmet. If you really don’t like your character’s appearance anymore, and you happen to have played in third-person so far, switching to first-person might be an option – you may not be able to change appearance, but at least you’ll hardly need to see your character except when you open the character menu.

How do respecs and permanent choices affect appearance options

Respecs in The Outer Worlds 2 allow for changing skills, perks, and certain background options, but do not impact your character’s physical appearance or cosmetic choices made during initial character creation. All decisions about facial features, hairstyle, tattoos, piercings, and prosthetics are hard-locked and cannot be altered after the game begins, making appearance options a permanent choice.

Permanent Choices and Respecs

  • Cosmetic choices-including your character’s face, hair, and body modifications-are permanent once finalized at the start of your playthrough.

  • Respec systems only let you modify stats, skills, backgrounds, or perks, not your visual design or avatar customization.

  • Unlike other games where you can alter your looks via special items or in-game services, The Outer Worlds 2 does not offer a way to change cosmetic appearance after character creation, even through respecs.

Impact on Gameplay and Customization

  • The permanence of cosmetic appearance means you should carefully consider your choices in character creation, as you cannot ’undo’ or respec looks later-only your skill tree or stats can be adjusted later in your playthrough.

  • Equipment and armor may conceal or visually change parts of your character’s silhouette or face (via helmet toggles), but this is unrelated to the actual cosmetic options chosen initially.

In summary, respecs in The Outer Worlds 2 do not affect any initial appearance choices; all visual customization is permanently set during character creation and cannot be changed afterwards.

Can I preserve character appearance when using a respec tool

When using a respec tool in The Outer Worlds 2, your character’s appearance-such as facial features, hairstyle, tattoos, piercings, and prosthetics-remains preserved and unchanged. Respec tools only allow for the adjustment of skills, stats, and background choices; they do not provide any option to modify or reset your character’s visual customization from the initial character creation.

  • After respec, your character will keep the same appearance settings chosen at the start of your playthrough.

  • There is no in-game or tool-based method to alter or reroll appearance; any changes via respec only affect gameplay attributes, not cosmetic details.

  • Helmets or armor can temporarily adjust your outward look but do not change the underlying character creation choices, so appearance is consistently preserved through all respec actions.

Thus, respec tools do not impact cosmetic appearance choices-your character’s look is always maintained throughout all respecs.
