Zelda Echoes of Wisdom Dampé Automatons Quest Complete Guide

Guides

When Zelda needs backup in Echoes of Wisdom, only Dampé’s mysterious automatons can turn the tide-but unlocking these quirky mechanical allies is a quest all its own. From chasing down a thieving crow in Hyrule Field to solving Dampé’s riddles and collecting rare Echoes, here’s how to assemble every automaton and unleash their unique powers across Hyrule.

For the most part, automatons are completely skippable, though they are somewhat useful in taking down swarms of enemies at once. You can clear the whole game without them, as the only thing that specifically requires an automaton is a side quest: “An Out-There Zol.”

Below, we explain where to find Dampé to unlock automatons as well as what echoes and items you need to provide for him to make each automaton.

Where to find Dampé and unlock automatons in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

To find Dampé and begin unlocking automatons in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, you’ll first need to progress the main story until after you’ve cleared the Hyrule Castle dungeon. Once this is done, head north of Hyrule Ranch in Hyrule Field, where you’ll encounter Dampé arguing with a crow that has stolen his key. Defeat the crow using any suitable Echo-flying Echoes work well-to retrieve the key, prompting Dampé to thank you and invite you to his workshop, known as Dampé Studio. The studio is located northeast of Hyrule Castle, near Hebra Mountain, and is marked on your map for easy access. Inside, Dampé will explain how automatons work and task you with bringing him specific Echoes to craft your first automaton, officially starting your journey to unlock all six automatons in the game.

You’ll need to find Dampé in Hyrule Field before you unlock the automatons. We didn’t see him until after we beat the Hyrule Castle dungeon, so it’s likely that he’s not available until after that portion of the game.

The location he’s in is somewhat random – in one instance, we found him around Hyrule Ranch, but in another, we found him northwest of Lake Hylia. He may appear in other areas, so you’ll want to scour around. Help him out by defeating the crow and he’ll thank you and head off to his workshop.

You can find his workshop north of the Eastern Temple and it has its own warp waypoint. Once you’re there, he’ll need your help making automatons, which leads us to the next part.

How to make the Techtite automaton (’Automaton Engineer Dampé’)

To make the Techtite automaton in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, first complete the “Still Missing” quest and then head northeast of Hyrule Ranch to find Dampé, who is trying to retrieve his stolen Clockwork Key from a crow. Defeat the crow using an Echo like Ignizol or Mothula to recover the key, then visit Dampé at his studio in Eastern Hyrule Field. There, Dampé will ask you to place two specific Echoes on a pedestal: the Tektite Echo (a creature with a big eye that jumps around) and the Mothula Echo (something that shoots hot smoke out of its backside). Once you do, Dampé will craft the Techtite automaton for you and give you the Clockwork Key, which is needed to wind up and activate the automaton. The Techtite can jump and blast enemies in a wide area, and if it breaks, Dampé can repair it for a fee or in exchange for Monster Stones.

To help out Dampé, you’ll need to place echoes that fulfill his description on the platform in front of him. The descriptions and their answers for this first automaton is as follows:

  • “Creature with the big eye – the sort that’s always jumping around” – Tektite Echo
  • “Something that shoots hot smoke out of its backside to blast forward” – Mothula Echo

You can find tektites in western Hyrule Field and mothula in the Gerudo Sanctum dungeon.

Once you place these on the pedestal, he’ll react excitedly and get to work, making you the Techtite automaton.

This automaton jumps high in the sky, blasting any enemies around in a large circle around where it jumped.

How to make the Tocktorok automaton (’Explosions Galore’)

To craft the Tocktorok automaton in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, begin by visiting Dampé’s workshop after unlocking the Automaton Engineer Dampé quest. The Tocktorok, known for its relentless firework attacks, is tied to the “Explosions Galore!” side quest. To build it, you must provide Dampé with two specific components: an Octorok Echo-which can be found in Hyrule Field-and a Firework Echo, which is obtained by completing the “Fireworks Artist” side quest in Goron City. Notably, you’ll need to have cleared the Rift in the Eldin Volcano area before the Firework Echo becomes accessible. Once you have both echoes, present them to Dampé at his workshop, and he will assemble the Tocktorok automaton for you.

Now when you interact with his book, you’ll get a new option to fulfill one of his other quests.

  • “A creature that spits stones out of its mouth” – Octorok Echo
  • A Firework Echo, only obtainable via the “The Fireworks Artist” side quest in Goron City

Note that to even get this side quest, you’ll need to clear out the rift in from the Eldin Volcano area. If you’re not this far in the game, you’ll need to come back later. Plenty of octorocks can be found in Suthorn Prairie.

This automaton shoots fireworks at enemies extremely quickly.

After making this automaton, you’ll have three more to make in Dampé’s notebook, which you can pick from in any order.

How to make the Gizmol automaton (’Performance Artist’)

To make the Gizmol automaton in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, start by completing the “Automaton Engineer Dampe” side quest to unlock Dampe’s studio and the automaton mechanic. Next, begin the “Performance Artist!” side quest, which requires you to bring Dampe two specific items: a Zol Echo and a Prismatic Music Box. Zol Echoes can be found by defeating Zols, commonly encountered in Suthorn Beach or Suthorn Forest early in the game. The Prismatic Music Box is obtained by beating the Middle Course of the Flag Race at Hyrule Ranch in under 25 seconds-a race you can access after earning Zelda’s horse from the “Impa’s Gift” side quest. Once you have both items, return to Dampe’s studio, select “I want an automaton,” and choose “performance artist” to hand over the items. Dampe will then create the Gizmol automaton for you, which uses music and dance to scatter groups of monsters.

To make this automaton, Dampé requests the following:

  • “A jiggly monster with cute little eyes” – Zol Echo
  • “A part that makes beautiful tones” from Hyrule Ranch – Prismatic Music Box item from Hyrule Ranch

You get the music box from completing the Flag Races at Hyrule Ranch. You’ll need to complete the short course and then the middle course, which each have a 10 rupee entry fee. Both of these races are pretty short, you just need to ride your horse and touch five flags on a path within a certain amount of time.

Zol can be found in large numbers in the Suthorn Forest and Hyrule Field.

Once you have the music box, you can talk to Dampé to give it to him and he’ll make you the automaton.

The Gizmol automaton dances and sings, shooting music bubbles that deal damage to enemies that touch it.

How to make the High-Teku Baba automaton (’Endless Stomach’)

To make the High-Teku Baba automaton in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, first ensure you’ve unlocked Dampé’s Automaton quests by helping him with a pesky crow and completing the initial “Automaton Engineer Dampé” quest. Next, inspect Dampé’s journal at his studio to accept the “Endless Stomach!” side quest. You’ll need to provide Dampé with a Deku Baba Lv.2 or Bio Deku Baba Echo and the Steel Trap key item-the Steel Trap can be found by following the quest’s clues, usually by collecting acorns and navigating platforming challenges near Dampé’s workshop. Place the required Echo and item on the platform in Dampé’s studio, and he’ll craft the High-Teku Baba automaton for you.

For this automaton, Dampé will also for the following:

  • “A creature that swallows things with its massive jaws” – Deku Baba Lv. 2 Echo
  • “A special part that can strengthen its ability to clamp down on things” – Steel Trap item from the acorn man

You can get the Steel Trap item from the weird acorn man in the western area of Hyrule Field. After collecting all the acorns for him within the given time limit, he’ll give you the Steel Trap.

You can find deku baba lv. 2 in the Faron Wetlands, south of Scrubton.

The High-Teku Baba eats and swallows enemies, but note that it can’t be moved once placed, so you’ll need to lure enemies to it once you place it.

How to make the Roboblin automaton (’Chop ’em in two’)

To make the Roboblin automaton for the “Chop ’em in Two!” quest in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, you’ll need to visit Dampé in his workshop and provide him with two key components: a Sword Moblin Echo (any level, which can be found in enemy camps across Hyrule) and the Heirloom Katana, a powerful sword obtained by completing six challenges at the Slumber Dojo in Kakariko Village. Dampé will then create the Roboblin, a deadly mechanical swordsman whose sweeping blade attacks can defeat multiple enemies at once. Once crafted, you can summon and wind up the Roboblin using the Clockwork Key, and if it gets damaged, Dampé can repair it for a small fee.

Dampé will request the following:

  • “A monster with a sword who fights alongside others” – Any Sword Moblin Echo
  • “A special weapon” – Heirloom Katana item from Kakariko Village

You can get the katana from the dojo in the western part of Kakariko Village. You’ll need to complete six of the challenges in order for the dojo master to give you the katana.

We probably don’t need to tell you where to find sword moblins, as they’re pretty much anywhere, but you can find them in the enemy camps around Hyrule.

Once you give him the item and show him the echo, he’ll make the Roboblin automaton for you, a combat automaton that’ll fight for you. It swipes in a huge triangle in front of it, allowing it to hit many enemies at once.

How to make the Goldfinch automaton (’Get Rich Quick!’)

To make the Goldfinch automaton in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, first ensure you have unlocked all five previous automatons with Dampé, as this is required before the “Get Rich Quick!” side quest becomes available. Once the quest is active, speak to Dampé at his studio-he will ask for two specific components: the Crow Echo and the Golden Fan. The Crow Echo can be obtained by defeating a crow, often found east of Hyrule Castle Town atop a tree, using a flying or long-range Echo for an easier battle. The Golden Fan is acquired by completing the first two levels of Mango Rush. Present both items to Dampé, and he will build the Goldfinch automaton-a clockwork bird that knocks rupees out of enemies it strikes and can glide indefinitely until it winds down.

You can only make this automaton once you’re done making the other ones.

Dampé will ask you for the following:

  • A Crow Echo
  • “A real special flashy somethin’”- Golden Fan item from the Gerudo Desert Oasis

To get the Golden Fan, you’ll need to complete the standard seed and the vibrant seed Mango Rush levels in the oasis.

The Goldfinch works the same way crows do – you can use them to glide by picking them up, and it’ll knock rupees out of enemies. However, the Goldfinch knocks way more rupees out of enemies, giving you blue and red rupees more frequently.

After you make the Goldfinch, Dampé will make an offer to you in exchange for five monster stones. Agree to trade with him, and you’ll get the Clockwork Bangle accessory, which allows you to wind up automatons faster.

What secret locations hide Dampé before I find him in Hyrule Field

Dampé’s initial appearances in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom are not fixed to one spot-he can be found in several secretive locations across Hyrule Field before settling in his workshop. Players have reported encountering him:

  • Near Hyrule Ranch, just north of it, where he’s seen arguing with a crow. This is a common first encounter that triggers his Automaton Engineer side quest.

  • Northwest of Lake Hylia, as another possible spawn point before he moves to his permanent location.

  • Northeast of Hyrule Castle, as some players have noted, though the area near Hyrule Ranch is generally closer and easier to check.

After you find and help him (usually by defeating the crow that stole his key), he invites you to his house, which is then marked on your map. His workshop, Dampé Studio, is found in Eastern Hyrule Field, just below Hebra Mountain.

Because his location can shift, it’s important to explore the areas north of Hyrule Ranch, northwest of Lake Hylia, and northeast of Hyrule Castle if you don’t see him right away.

What hidden clues lead me to Dampe’s secret cave above his studio

Several subtle clues and environmental hints guide you to Dampé’s secret cave above his studio in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom:

  • High Ledge Above the Studio: The cave entrance is located on a high ledge just above Dampé’s Studio in Eastern Hyrule Field, northeast of the East Temple. This elevated position is a visual clue-look for a ledge that seems just out of reach above the studio.

  • Environmental Tools: The surrounding area suggests creative use of Echoes-such as Old Beds or platforms-to build a staircase or otherwise reach the high ledge, hinting at the need for puzzle-solving and experimentation to access the cave.

  • Suspicious Boulder and Puzzle Room: Once inside, you’ll find a small room with a boulder blocking a switch behind a barred gate. The setup implies you’ll need to use Bind to move the boulder and then spawn an object (like a Caromadillo or Armos statue) on the other side to hit the switch-another clue that the cave is meant for clever puzzle-solving.

  • Treasure Chest Reward: The presence of a visible, gated treasure chest inside the cave serves as a lure, encouraging players to figure out the puzzle and rewarding them with Might Crystals for their efforts.

These clues-an out-of-reach entrance, environmental prompts to use Echoes creatively, and an intriguing puzzle setup inside-are designed to catch the eye of observant and curious players exploring around Dampé’s studio.
