[Ed. note: We have tried to be considerate of spoilers in our guide. Our maps are complete so they do have the names of the zones and locations of dungeons and trials. We’ve also separated the fifth and sixth areas with a large image, as the sixth zone had not been revealed in any form (unlike the other areas, which were shown in patch notes). Don’t scroll below that image unless you’re ready to see the final area.]
Aether currents in FFXIV, explained
Aether Currents in FFXIV are essential collectibles that players must attune to in order to unlock the ability to fly mounts in each new zone, including those in the Dawntrail expansion. Each zone typically requires players to find and interact with 15 Aether Currents-10 scattered throughout the open world and 5 obtained through completing main scenario and side quests. These currents appear as greenish swirling orbs and can be located using the Aether Compass, which guides players to the nearest current. Unlocking all Aether Currents in a zone not only enables flight but also enhances exploration by revealing hidden paths and landmarks, making traversal faster and more enjoyable.
As usual, in order to unlock flying in each new zone, you’ll need to find and interact with10 aether currents, as well as complete five quests. The four side quests required for aether currents are marked with the usual blue plus sign quest marker and the fifth quest current is a reward for finishing one of the main scenario quests in the area (usually towards the end of your stint in said area).
Usually you can use your Aether Compass in your key items to tell you how many yalms away the closest current is. If you don’t want to deal with that, you can just use our maps for an easy peasy hunt. Your Aether Compass can still be found in your “collections” menu, under the “duty” tab, if you want to find currents as Yoshi-P intended.
We list the Dawntrail zones in order you encounter them, though since there are diverging paths to take, some of them, like Kozama’uka and Urqopacha, are interchangable.
Below we list our aether currents in the order they appear in the aether current menu from left to right, that way if you’re missing one, you’ll know which one you need without having to use your Aether Compass. That being said, we don’t recommend grabbing these in the order they’re numbered, but rather just grabbing whatever is closest to you as you adventure through these new maps.
Kozama’uka aether current locations
In Kozama’uka, a region in Final Fantasy XIV’s Dawntrail expansion, players must collect a total of 15 Aether Currents to unlock flying. These consist of 10 field Aether Currents scattered across the area and 5 obtained through specific quests. The field currents are found in diverse locations such as beneath the House of Winds High treehouse, on islands in lakes, near docks, and inside caves, with coordinates like (X: 8.7, Y: 11.7) and (X: 31.8, Y: 14.5). Quest-related Aether Currents are awarded from side quests like “Rite of the Wind’s Chosen” and “Divine Inspiration,” as well as from main scenario quests including “Sibling Rescue.” Many currents become accessible only after progressing through the main storyline, and players often need to explore both lower and upper layers of the map to find them all.
Note that you’ll only be able to get half of these currents on your first visit to Kozama’uka. You’ll get the other five when you return here to the southern half of the map later.

- On a southern cliff facing the water.
- On an island in the middle of the water. (You can swim to this island!)
- In the corner of the cavern.
- On a grassy mound near some purple flowers.
- At the end of the dock.
- Around the base of the tree that holds up the House of Winds High.
- On a patch of flowery land behind a tree.

- In the caves below on a cliff edge.
- North of the House of Waters High.
Urqopacha aether current locations
In Urqopacha, a key zone in Final Fantasy XIV’s Dawntrail expansion, players must locate and attune to 15 Aether Currents to unlock flying. These currents are scattered across the southern half of the map, with precise locations including boulders, cliffs, and ridge tops near landmarks like Icuvlo’s Inn, Ciblu’s Coffee Grounds, and Worlar’s Echo. Some Aether Currents become available only after progressing through main scenario quests, while others are tied to side quests found in the area. Players can find detailed coordinates and visual guides to each current, ensuring a thorough and efficient collection process to enable flight in Urqopacha.
Just like the Kozama’uka currents, you’ll only find five of these on your first visit. The southern part of the map will unlock later, giving you the remaining five.

- On the top edge of a cliff.
- At the top of the cliff overlooking the northern half of Urqopacha, behind some ruins.
- On the lower cliffs by Chirwagur Lake.

Yak’tel aether current locations
Yak’tel, one of the zones in Final Fantasy XIV’s Dawntrail expansion, features 15 aether currents that players must attune to in order to unlock flying. These include 10 aether currents scattered across the map, which can be located using the Aether Compass, four obtained from side quests unlocked after specific main scenario quests, and one rewarded from the main scenario quest itself. The zone is divided into northern and southern areas, with the northern half accessible first and the southern half opening up as you progress in the story. Key aether current locations include cliffs, shores of cenotes, and areas beneath arched roots, making exploration both challenging and rewarding.
To get to the southern half of the map, you’ll need to progress through some story.

Shaaloani aether current locations
Shaaloani, a desert-like zone in Final Fantasy XIV’s Dawntrail expansion, features 10 readily accessible aether currents scattered across its wide plains, with an additional five tied to quests and the main scenario. Players can find these currents at specific coordinates such as X:27.3 Y:31.5 on a building’s second floor in Hhusatahwi, or X:9.0 Y:27.9 inside a canyon, among others. Collecting all these aether currents is essential to unlock flying in the region, which becomes available after progressing through the main scenario quests up to level 96. Using the Aether Compass greatly aids in locating these currents efficiently across Shaaloani’s varied terrain.

The field currents are situated in various challenging spots such as cliff edges, small bridges, and cavern rocks, making exploration essential. These currents are found in various notable locations such as near a large pillar-tree structure, by lava pits, at the edge of cliffs, between two Ferris wheels, and inside architectural features like towers and rotundas. Additionally, players must complete four side quests and one main scenario quest to unlock five more quest-exclusive Aether Currents, which are crucial for fully enabling flight in Living Memory. Using the Aether Compass alongside this knowledge can greatly aid in efficiently locating these currents as you progress through the zone’s content.

Where are the most hidden Dawntrail aether currents hiding in FFXIV
The most hidden Dawntrail Aether Currents in FFXIV tend to be those tucked away on southern cliffs facing the water, on small islands in the middle of the water, or in corners of zones like Kozama’uka, where terrain and elevation make them less obvious to spot. Additionally, some Aether Currents are only obtainable after completing specific side quests or main scenario quests, adding another layer of challenge to finding them. These currents can be concealed below ground or behind environmental obstacles, requiring thorough exploration and quest progression to unlock flying in their respective zones.
Which Dawntrail aether currents are hardest to spot in hidden spots
The hardest Dawntrail Aether Currents to spot are often those located on high cliffs, small islands, or tucked away in less obvious terrain features such as under arched roots by water or inside tunnels. For example, currents found on ledges overlooking shadow pools or at the top of jumping puzzles require careful exploration and sometimes unconventional routes to reach. Additionally, some Aether Currents are tied to main scenario quests or side quests, meaning they only become accessible after certain story progressions, which can make them less obvious to players who haven’t advanced far enough yet. These hidden spots challenge players to thoroughly explore every corner of zones like Kozama’uka and Urqopacha, rewarding those who do with the ability to unlock flying in Dawntrail.
