What are Fantasias in FFXIV?
A Fantasia in Final Fantasy XIV is a special potion item that grants players a one-time opportunity to completely change their character’s appearance, including race and physical features, beyond what the in-game Aesthetician service allows. Upon using a Fantasia, players are taken to the character creation screen at their next login, where they can redesign their character except for the name, starting city, and server. Fantasias are typically purchased but can also be obtained for free through certain quests or limited-time events, making them a valuable tool for players wanting to refresh or customize their character’s look.
Fantasias are single-use potions that allow you to completely change your character’s appearance. If you want to change races, faces, or other features like that, you’ll need to use a Fantasia. (For hair styles and face paint, you can just call the aesthetician.)
You usually have to pay $10 per Fantasia with bundles of them being slightly discounted, but you can snag a few for free in-game.
Where to get free Fantasia in FFXIV
To get a free Fantasia in Final Fantasy XIV, head to Ul’dah – Steps of Thal at coordinates X:13.4 Y:9.2 and speak with the Medicine Merchant NPC to start the “Bottled Fantasy” quest. After a brief delivery task to the Steps of Nald, return to the Medicine Merchant to receive your free Fantasia. This quest becomes available after completing the level 17 main scenario quest “The Scions of the Seventh Dawn,” making it accessible to new players early in the game. Additionally, another free Fantasia can be earned by completing the level 50 main scenario quest “The Ultimate Weapon.” There are also limited-time opportunities to get free Fantasias from the Wandering Moogle in Old Gridania during certain patches. Normally, Fantasias cost real money, so these free options are a great way to customize your character’s appearance without spending. After using a Fantasia, you have 60 in-game minutes to re-edit your character’s look as much as you want.
You will get a Fantasia for free by completing the main scenario quests in A Realm Reborn, as it’s a reward for finishing the level 50 quest “The Ultimate Weapon.”
There’s also an easier method (as of patch 7.0) by completing level 17 ARR main scenario quest “The Scions of the Seventh Dawn.”
For this latter method, once you have squared away that quest, head to Ul’dah – Steps of Thal and talk to the Medicine Merchant NPC north of the Sapphire Avenue Exchange and accept the quest “Bottled Fantasy.”
After making a quick delivery, this robed NPC will give you a free Fantasia for your time. Nice.

How to use Fantasia in FFXIV
To use Fantasia in FFXIV, first select the Fantasia item from your inventory and choose “Use.” Before doing so, make sure to unequip all your gear except for your weapon, including accessories like facewear, to avoid issues. After using Fantasia, log out of the game and at the character selection screen, choose the “Re-edit Character” option. This will take you to the character creation interface where you can completely redesign your character’s appearance, including race, gender, voice, and other features. You have up to an hour to finalize your changes before logging back in with your new look.
There are just a few steps to using a Fantasia:
- Use the Fantasia item in your inventory.
- Unequip everything from your character. They can still have their weapon equipped. (And maybe find a private place so you don’t log back on in the middle of New Gridania completely naked.)
- Log off.
- Select your character from the usual login screen and select “re-edit character.”
- Make any changes you want to your character.
- Log back in.
As of the 7.0 Dawntrail patch, you can make changes to your character within one hour of gameplay time since the first initial character edit. The one-hour timer does not go down when you’re logged off, so you’ll have plenty of time to look at your character in different environments and scenarios before locking in your decision.
You can also use the Fantasia and just choose to not edit your character, saving the ability to edit it for as long as you want. Fantasias do not expire.
