Stuck on the scuffed rock blocking Shadowheart’s path in Baldur’s Gate 3? One overlooked item in your inventory shifts it without a fight.
Scuffed rock location
The scuffed rock sits along the beach at coordinates X:143, Y:280, just southwest of the Roadside Cliffs waypoint near the crashed nautiloid ship. From the waypoint, head southwest to a cliff edge, jump down safely to the water’s edge, and walk along the shore until the grey boulder appears, often highlighted after a successful Nature or Perception check by characters like Shadowheart. Position a strong party member such as Lae’zel or Karlach here to drag it aside, exposing an ornate chest with early-game loot including a Harper’s map, ruby, and potion of speed.

The scuffed rock is located to the southwest of the Nautiloid crash site. Walk to the coast and jump to the path leading towards the rock. From there, you can walk over to the rock.
How to move the scuffed rock in Baldur’s Gate 3
Locate the scuffed rock on the beach near the Roadside Cliffs waypoint, past the Nautiloid crash site, by jumping down from the cliff edge after passing a Perception check. Switch to a party member with at least 13 Strength, such as Lae’zel, Karlach, or Shadowheart, then click and drag the rock aside or use the Throw option to displace it. This reveals an ornate chest holding a Potion of Speed, Harper’s Notebook, Harper’s Map, a Ruby, an Agate, and gold.

As you walk up to the rock, your characters will undergo a Perception check where, and if they pass it, they’ll spot something under the scuffed rock. Before you can move the rock, you’ll need a character with a decent amount of strength. We were able to move the rock with Shadowheart who has a strength of 13. All you need to do to move the rock is switch to a character with at least 13 strength, and click and drag the rock away from its original position. From there, you can open the ornate chest, which will give you some important items such as Harper’s map and notebook.
Which companions can move heavy objects like the scuffed rock
Companions with sufficient Strength (typically 13 or higher) can move heavy objects like the scuffed rock in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Key Companions
Lae’zel (Fighter, high Strength by default) reliably succeeds without levels.
Shadowheart meets the threshold early, making her a viable option.
Karlach excels once recruited, due to her exceptional Strength score.
Mechanics
Any party member passing the Strength check can drag the rock by left-clicking and moving it aside on PC. Higher Strength allows dragging farther if needed. Custom characters or leveled companions like Barbarians or Fighters also work if built for Strength.
Which companions have Strength 13 or higher early game
Lae’zel and Shadowheart have Strength 13 or higher right from the early game in Baldur’s Gate 3, enabling them to move heavy objects like the scuffed rock without much leveling.[conversation_history]
Early Availability
Lae’zel starts with Strength 17 as a Fighter, recruited immediately after the Nautiloid crash on the beach.
Shadowheart has exactly 13 Strength as a Cleric, available from the opening beach area or shortly after.
Other Notes
Karlach reaches high Strength (17) upon recruitment in the goblin camp area, still early Act 1.
Companions like Astarion (8), Gale (8), and Wyll (8) fall short and need buffs or levels to handle such checks.
