Nightmare Dungeons hide Diablo 4’s toughest challenges behind rare sigils and precise crafting. Knowing how to create and upgrade these items can turn a standard dungeon run into a treasure-filled test of mastery where every fight counts.
In this Diablo 4 guide, we’ll teach you how to push your character into higher tier Nightmare Dungeons by unlocking the Nightmare Sigil crafting system.
What are Nightmare Dungeons and how do they work?
Nightmare Dungeons in Diablo 4 offer challenging endgame content with boosted rewards like greater affixes and higher-tier loot. Players activate them by consuming a Nightmare Sigil at a dungeon’s entrance, which transforms the area with modifiers that ramp up difficulty and potential gains. Tier levels from 1 to 100 determine enemy density, elite packs, and glyph upgrade opportunities upon completion. Higher tiers demand stronger builds and better gear, making sigil crafting a key step for progression. Clear the dungeon’s final boss to claim a chest with tier-scaling spoils and materials for more sigils.

Nightmare Dungeons – the endgame activity with the longest tail in Diablo 4, essentially hyper-difficult versions of the dungeons that already exist in-game – are only accessible via the consumable Nightmare Sigils in Diablo 4. On completion, Nightmare Dungeons award loot and give you an opportunity to level up your Glyphs, which are crucial for improving your Paragon boards.
Nightmare Dungeons (and their corresponding sigils) come in tiers, starting at Tier 1 and scaling past Tier 100. Each have unique “affixes” that can significantly alter the difficulty of the Nightmare Dungeon. For example, one affix for a dungeon may cause lightning to strike you every few seconds, requiring you to seek shelter in an immunity bubble that occasionally spawns. Another affix causes a giant stone pillar to follow you around. If you get too close to the pillar, it will explode, dealing massive amounts of damage to and any other players nearby.
To activate a Nightmare Dungeon, go to your consumables menu and select one of the Nightmare Sigils in your inventory. This will consume the Sigil and transform the dungeon into a Nightmare Dungeon with the specifications detailed on the Sigil you used. Note that you can only have one Nightmare Dungeon up at once, and consuming another Sigil will shut down the currently active Nightmare.
With the Nightmare Dungeon active, you then have to physically make your way to that dungeon in order to enter it.
How do you reach high-level Nightmare Dungeons?
High-level Nightmare Dungeons become accessible once you gather higher-tier Nightmare Sigils, which can be obtained by completing existing Nightmare Dungeons or crafting them through the Occultist. The dungeon tier you can enter depends on your world tier and character power, so pushing difficulty gradually helps you reach stronger sigils. Using materials like Sigil Powder from salvaged sigils allows you to create more challenging ones. As your Glyphs improve through repeated runs, you’ll gain the strength needed to survive and progress through tougher dungeons.

Conquering early Nightmare Dungeons and using Nightmare Sigils can be quite simple. But reaching higher levels? That’s a bit more complex and obnoxious.
You’ll get your first Nightmare Sigil from completing 10 Grim Favors from the Tree of Whispers – which you’ll gain access to immediately after finishing Diablo 4‘s campaign. These early Nightmare Sigils will only be Tier 1. But in order to unlock the ability to craft high-level Nightmare Sigils, you need to first complete a Tier 3 Nightmare Dungeon (or higher).
How to get a Tier 3 Nightmare Sigil
To obtain a Tier 3 Nightmare Sigil, you must first clear Tier 2 Nightmare Dungeons and collect Sigil Powder by salvaging lower-tier Sigils at the Occultist. Once you have enough materials, use the Occultist’s crafting menu to create a higher-tier Sigil. The resulting Tier 3 Sigil will provide a more challenging dungeon with tougher enemies, higher rewards, and unique afflictions that test your build and tactics.
So how do you get a Tier 3 Nightmare Sigil so you can complete a Tier 3 Nightmare Dungeon? There are three options.
- First, you can get lucky. Tier 2 Nightmare Sigils can drop in a Tier 1 Nightmare Dungeon, and Tier 3s can drop in a Tier 2 Nightmare Dungeon. However, this grind can be pretty time consuming, and isn’t the recommended way to find a Tier 3 Sigil.
- The second option is probably the best for most players. Ignore Nightmare Dungeons entirely in World Tier 3 – outside of any gear runs – and focus on getting to World Tier 4 as fast as possible. Once you’re on Torment difficulty, get a cache from the Tree of Whispers and you’ll have a chance at finding a Tier 21 Nightmare Sigil. Complete that Sigil’s corresponding dungeon and you’ll unlock the crafting quest.
- The third and final option only works if you have high-level friends, but it’s easily the fastest option. Join a friend who already has Nightmare Sigil crafting unlocked and help them complete a Tier 3 Nightmare Dungeon. Even if it’s not your Sigil that was used, you’ll still unlock the crafting quest.
How to use Nightmare Sigil crafting to reach higher Nightmare Dungeons
Nightmare Sigil crafting allows players to create higher-tier keys that open tougher Nightmare Dungeons with better rewards. Collect Sigil Powder by salvaging unwanted sigils at the Occultist, then use that powder to craft new ones at higher tiers. Each crafted sigil determines the dungeon’s difficulty, afflictions, and rewards. As players run more dungeons, they gain access to stronger crafting options, enabling steady progression through increasingly challenging tiers.

Once you’ve unlocked Nightmare Sigil crafting, you’ll have two new options at the Occultist: Craft Sigils and Salvage Sigils.
Let’s start with Salvage Sigils, as it’s the simplest. This works just like salvaging gear at the Blacksmith, but it’s only for Nightmare Sigils that you don’t want. Salvaging Sigils will turn them into Sigil Powder, which you’ll need for crafting.
The Craft Sigils menu looks very complex, but is actually one of the simpler crafting systems in the game. You’ll be able to craft Sacred Nightmare Sigils up to Tier 20 and then Ancestral Sigils up to Tier 100. The best way to think about this is that Sacred Sigils are for World Tier 3 players and Ancestral Sigils are for the wide range of World Tier 4 players.
Each Tier of Sigil creates a more powerful Nightmare Dungeon (which gives more Glyph XP and better rewards upon completion) and also costs more Sigil Powder to craft.
How to farm Sigil Powder efficiently
Sigil Powder in Diablo 4 is obtained by salvaging unwanted Nightmare Sigils at the Occultist, and efficient farming focuses on generating excess sigils quickly through repeatable activities.โโ
Partial Nightmare Dungeon Runs
Enter a low-tier Nightmare Dungeon (e.g., Tier 1-20 via Sacred Sigils), clear enemies and elites for sigil drops without completing objectives or killing the boss, then exit using the emote wheel. Wait 2-3 minutes outside for reset, repeat the loop to collect stacks of sigils, salvage for powder, and sustain indefinitely with one sigil.โโ
Helltides and Whisper Caches
Farm Helltide events for chests that drop sigils alongside Grim Favor for Tree of Whispers caches, which reward additional sigils. Prioritize Mystery Chests and events; salvage low-value sigils (e.g., those with shrines or gems) while keeping premium ones like Treasure Breach or Hidden Armory.โโ
World Bosses and Azmodan Invasions
Participate in world bosses and Azmodan invasion chests for high-volume sigil explosions (20-68 per drop at higher ranks). Level Azmodan via PvP red creatures and goblin events to rank 5+ for abundant drops; combine with Tree of Whispers for multi-reward efficiency.โโ
Best Nightmare Dungeons for sigil powder farming
Sirocco Caverns stands out as a top choice for sigil powder farming due to its linear layout and high enemy density, allowing quick partial clears before resetting. Other strong options include dungeons with fast traversal like those in Fractured Peaks for efficient sigil drops to salvage.โ
Top Dungeon Picks
-
Sirocco Caverns (Tier 1-20): Short path to first sigil drops; enter, kill packs for 4-5 sigils, exit via emote wheel, reset instantly via map-no wait needed.โ
-
Gale Valley: High elite spawns yield sigils rapidly; ideal for sustaining powder loops without boss fights.โ
-
Lower-tier linear dungeons (e.g., Tiers 1-10): Prioritize any with Whisper bounties for extra Grim Favor alongside sigils to salvage.โ
Farming Technique
Run partial Nightmare Dungeons: Grab sigils from elites, salvage junk (e.g., C-tier like Gold Reserve or Emerald Reserve) at Occultist for powder. Use one sigil to farm stacks of 20+ per loop; higher World Tiers boost drop tiers.โ
Tier List Insights
S-tier sigils like Sarat’s Lair (Treasure Breach) or Forbidden City (Horadric Strongroom) are worth keeping, but salvage B/C-tier ones (e.g., Mournfield, Faceless Shrine) immediately as they drop often in low runs and yield ample powder.โ
