Guides

Nestled atop the icy peaks of Gnoll Mountain, Frostcrag Spire stands as the ultimate sanctuary for mages in Oblivion Remastered. But unlocking this majestic tower is no simple feat-requiring a daring climb, a hidden key, and a quest to restore its magical grandeur. Ready to claim the most coveted home in Cyrodiil and harness powerful enchanting and spellmaking tools? Here’s your definitive guide to reaching and unlocking Frostcrag Spire on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.

Frostcrag Spire was originally part of the Wizard’s Tower DLC. Since all of that content is part of the remastered edition, you just kind of already own Frostcrag Spire. All that’s left for you to do is to go claim it.

Our Oblivion Remastered guide will tell how to find Frostcrag Spire and cover all of the additions and upgrades you can purchase.

How to reach Frostcrag Spire in Oblivion Remastered

To reach Frostcrag Spire in Oblivion Remastered, start from the Wildeye Stables on the eastern edge of Bruma in northern Cyrodiil. From there, look east to spot the spire atop Gnoll Mountain in the Jerall Mountains. Follow the road east from Bruma until you reach a fork, then head north to find an unmarked path leading east and upward into the mountains. This path takes you to the Gnoll Mountain fast travel point; continue east along the road from here until you arrive at Frostcrag Spire. The entrance is locked, so either pick the lock or find the key in a chest at a small campsite on the southern edge of the spire’s perimeter to gain access.

Frostcrag Spire was part of an expansion for the original Oblivion. When you launched the game with the DLC, you’d get a deed delivered to you that would launch the “Frostcrag Spire” quest. In Oblivion Remastered, though, you don’t get the deed in the mail (we didn’t, at least). Instead, you just kind of have to know where to go, which is what we’re here for.

Frostcrag Spire is located on Gnoll Mountain in the Jerall Mountains to the east of Bruma.

To find Frostcrag Spire, head to the Wildeye Stables on the eastern edge of Bruma in northern Cyrodiil. Face east, and you’ll be able to see Frostcrag Spire at the top of the mountains.

To get there, start following the road east away from Bruma. Take the fork to the north and follow it until you see an unmarked path on your right. Follow that path basically straight east and up into the mountains. You’ll come to the Gnoll Mountain fast travel point. From there, follow the road east until you reach Frostcrag Spire.

Where to find the key to Frostcrag Spire in Oblivion Remastered

In Oblivion Remastered, the key to Frostcrag Spire can be found at the Mountain View Camp, a small unmarked campsite located just south of the spire itself. To obtain the key, head to this camp and open the chest there. This allows you to enter Frostcrag Spire without needing to pick the average difficulty lock on the door. The camp is visible near the spire, which is situated east of Bruma on Gnoll Mountain in the Jerall Mountains.

The front door to Frostcrag Spire is locked. You can pick it (it’s an average difficulty lock), or you can go find the key.

Head around the outer wall of Frostcrag to the south edge. There, you’ll find a bare-bones campsite. Open the chest to find the Frostcrag Spire Key.

How to complete the Frostcrag Spire quest in Oblivion Remastered

To complete the Frostcrag Spire quest in Oblivion Remastered, first travel to the Jerall Mountains east of Bruma and locate the spire. You can either pick the average-difficulty lock on the entrance door or find the Frostcrag Spire Key in a chest at a small camp south of the tower. Once inside, interact with the Frostcrag Spire Memoirs book resting on a frozen hand to trigger the quest update. This directs you to visit Aurelinwae at the Mystic Emporium in the Imperial City Market District, where you can purchase various upgrades and enhancements for the spire, such as alchemy labs, living quarters, and vault expansions. After buying these upgrades, return to the spire to activate and use the new features, fully restoring and claiming the tower as your magical home.

The first time you enter Frostcrag, you’ll find the Frostcrag Spire Memoirs tome. Read it to find out that the remainder of the “Frostcrag Spire” quest is buying upgrades and improvements. You’ll have to head to the Imperial City Market District and look for Aurelinwae at Mystic Emporium.

When you speak to her, she won’t say anything about Frostcrag. Instead, check out what she’s selling. Along with spell scrolls and alchemy components, she’ll sell you letters that unlock new areas in the spire.

  • Frostcrag Alchemy Lab (about 2,500 gold). This adds an alchemy table to the upstairs Living Area. On the table are apprentice alchemy tools, and just being near the table boosts your Alchemy skill by 15.
  • Frostcrag Bedroom Area (base of 1,600 gold). This adds a bed and a few storage containers to the upstairs Living Area.
  • Frostcrag Library Area (base of 1,600 gold). This upgrade adds several (more) bookcases to the Main Level.
  • Frostcrag Vault Area (base of 1,600 gold). The final upgrade adds a bunch of chests (and some friendly guardian imps) to the downstairs Vault.
  • Magetallow Candles Box (base 3,300 gold each). The magetallow candles aren’t an upgrade, per se, but they are required to get the Altars of Enchanting and Spellmaking on the Main Level to work.

Buying all of the upgrades will cost you around 14,000 gold. If you’re not too concerned about where the money comes from, you could always cheat by duplicating items and selling them.

Once you finish purchasing all of the upgrades, you’ll find a small jewelry box on top of a bookcase in the Main Level of Frostcrag Spire. Inside, you’ll find the Pentamagic Loop ring that increases all of your magic skills by 5 points.

Frostcrag Spire map in Oblivion Remastered

Frostcrag Spire in Oblivion Remastered is a prominent mage tower located atop Gnoll Mountain in the Jerall Mountains, east of Bruma. It serves as a free player home that offers extensive conveniences, including crafting altars for enchanting, spellmaking, and alchemy, along with teleportation portals to all the mage guilds across Cyrodiil. The spire is visible from the Wildeye Stables near Bruma, and players can reach it by following a hidden dirt path up the mountain, unlocking a fast travel point upon arrival. Once inside, players can purchase various upgrades from Aurelinwae at the Mystic Emporium in the Imperial City to fully furnish and enhance the tower, making it one of the best residences in the game for mages and adventurers alike.

There are three main levels to Frostcrag Spire.

The Main Level is where you enter. You’ll find a novice alchemy table there, the Altars of Enchanting and Spellmaking, and the Atronach Altar.

The Living Area is upstairs. You’ll find a large garden of alchemical components (that respawns after a day or two), and it’s where your bed and the apprentice alchemy table will be added.

The Vault is in the basement. The upgrade adds a bunch of chests and storage containers around the central room. Along the south wall, you’ll find a wine rack with some fancy (and powerful) wines and a pair of tombstones that give you (temporary) buffs when activated.

  3. Enter the Tower: Use the key to unlock the door and enter the spire. Inside, you will find a book resting on a frozen hand called Frostcrag Spire Memoirs. Reading this book triggers the quest to claim the spire as your home and activates various magical mechanisms within the tower.

  4. Upgrade the Spire: Visit Aurelinwae at the Mystic Emporium in the Imperial City Market District to purchase upgrades for the spire, such as the Alchemy Lab, Bedroom, Library, and Vault. These upgrades enhance your home with useful features like alchemy tools, storage, and magical enhancements.

  5. Use the Tower’s Features: After upgrades, the spire offers teleporters to all Mages Guild halls in Cyrodiil, an alchemical garden, an Atronach Altar, and enchanting and spellmaking facilities. A special ring boosting magic skills can be found in a jewelry box atop a bookcase after completing all upgrades.

By following these steps, you unlock one of the most powerful and versatile player homes in Oblivion Remastered, perfect for any aspiring mage.

Where exactly is the hidden campsite with the Frostcrag key in Oblivion Remastered

The hidden campsite containing the Frostcrag Spire key is located just south of the tower, behind it on the cliffside. When facing the front door of Frostcrag Spire, head slightly to your left and look over the ledge to spot a small campfire with a tent and a chest nearby. The key to the spire’s front door is inside that chest, allowing you to bypass the lockpicking requirement and enter the tower easily.
