Sunset fireflies are tiny, glowing keys to stealth gear and upgrade materials in Tears of the Kingdom, but they vanish the moment you rush them or pick the wrong time and place. Here is how to stalk them quietly through Hyrule’s twilight, force them to spawn, and farm more than you’ll ever need.
Sunset fireflies can be found throughout Hyrule, but only at nighttime, only in certain areas, and during temperate conditions (they won’t spawn in cold areas, or while it’s raining). Finding them can be tricky, and catching them can be even trickier. But there are good farming locations for sunset fireflies and Beedle the merchant will even sell you a few.
Here’s where to find sunset fireflies across Hyrule.
Sunset firefly locations
Sunset fireflies appear at night near specific spots in Hyrule. Check the area south of Hyrule Castle along the riverbank, where clusters glow above the water after dark. Mount Hylia on the Great Plateau also hosts them around its pond edges. South Lanayru’s wetlands provide another reliable source, with fireflies hovering over grassy patches close to Lindor’s Brow Cave. Visit these sites after sunset and use Ultrahand to collect them quietly without scaring them off.
Sunset fireflies can be found only at night, primarily in areas with wetlands, lakes, ponds, and trees. In the early game, you can find a few sunset fireflies near ponds in East Castle Town. Elsewhere, you can find clusters of sunset fireflies on the Tears of the Kingdom map at:
- Faron Woods and Pagos Woods, in the Faron region
- Rutile Lake, southwest of Satori Mountain
- Hopper Pond, west of the Forest of Spirits
- Keya Pond, north of Dunsel Plateau
Make sure to rest at a campfire until nighttime if you’re going sunset firefly hunting!
How to catch sunset fireflies
Sunset fireflies appear only at night, usually between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m., in quiet grassy areas or near forests. To catch them, crouch to move silently and avoid using bright light sources that might scare them away. Equip stealth-boosting armor or eat food that increases sneak speed to help you get closer without alerting them. Once near enough, press the action button to grab the firefly before it flies off.

Sunset fireflies will fly away if you approach them too quickly, so walk slowly and steadily toward them if you see one. Crouch by pressing in on the L stick to sneak up on them. Groups of sunset fireflies will bely their actual quantity; you may see what appear to be a dozen or more fireflies at a location, but only catch two or three of them.
Where to buy sunset fireflies
You can purchase sunset fireflies from Beedle, the traveling merchant often found at stables across Hyrule. His stock changes, but he frequently carries a few of these glowing insects for a modest price. If you prefer a fixed location, check the vendor in Kakariko Village at night, as they sometimes offer limited quantities. Buying from merchants is a convenient alternative to catching the fireflies yourself, especially if you need them for crafting or stealth upgrades.
Beedle the merchant will sell you sunset fireflies. You can find him at Highland Stable – conveniently near Pyper’s side quest and the Faron region, where sunset fireflies are abundant – but he’ll only sell three at a time. They cost 10 rupees each. Rest at an inn if you want to purchase more fireflies from Beedle, who restocks his goods every 24 hours of in-game time.
Best locations to farm Sunset Fireflies quickly
Pagos Woods and Finra Woods stand out as the top spots for quick Sunset Firefly farming, located just north of Highland Stable in the Faron region. These dense, wooded marshlands spawn dense clusters at night (9 PM to 5 AM), letting players grab 20+ fireflies in one efficient run by crouching and sneaking slowly. Clear nearby enemies first to avoid spooking them, and rest at a campfire to reset time if needed.
Other Strong Locations
Hopper Pond on the Great Plateau offers reliable clusters around the water’s edge, ideal for early-game farming. Behind the house in Hateno Village (near Firly Pond) yields smaller but consistent groups in a safe, accessible area. Lanayru Wetlands east of Lookout Landing also teem with fireflies at night.
Quick Buying Alternative
For speed without hunting, buy up to three from Beedle at Highland Stable (10 Rupees each); rest 24 in-game hours to restock. This supplements farming when needing just a few more.
Best nighttime routes for farming Sunset Fireflies quickly
Pagos Woods-Finra Woods-Highland Stable Loop offers the fastest nighttime route for farming Sunset Fireflies, starting at Highland Stable in Faron Grasslands. From the stable, head north into Pagos Woods first, crouch-sneak through dense trees and marsh edges to grab 10+ fireflies (9 PM-5 AM), then loop east to Finra Woods for another dense cluster nearby. Return to the stable to buy 3 more from Beedle (rest 24 hours to restock if needed), completing a 20-30 firefly run in under 15 in-game minutes; repeat by resting at a campfire.
Early-Game Great Plateau Circuit
Begin at Hopper Pond west of Forest of Spirits on the Great Plateau, netting 8-12 fireflies around the water’s edge. Glide north to Keya Pond near Dunsel Plateau for 5-8 more in wooded shallows, then hit Forest of Spirits ponds for extras. This safe, compact loop avoids enemies and yields 20+ per night, ideal before accessing Faron.
Hateno-Lanayru Wetlands Extension
From Hateno Village, farm behind the old house at Firly Pond (4-6 fireflies), then fast-travel to Lanayru Wetlands east of Lookout Landing for widespread clusters around ponds. Connect via bridges for steady spawns, adding Satori Mountain’s Rutile Lake ponds southwest of Hyrule Castle if time allows (high density in good weather). Wear stealth gear and clear threats to maximize catches without spooking swarms.
