Finding the right job combination in Octopath Traveler 2 can turn a solid party into an unstoppable force. Mix the right skills, weapons, and support powers, and your heroes can dominate every boss and side quest the game throws at them.
You’ll need to visit job guilds in order to pick up licenses to set secondary jobs. You can change your character’s secondary jobs at any time, so there’s no need to worry about setting one and having it be permanent.
Some of the secondary jobs compliment a character’s stats and latent abilities better than others. While we’re not sure if these are the “best” (we haven’t tested every individual combination nor have we crunched the numbers), here’s a list of our favorite job combinations that we’ve tried out so far. If we discover more broken job combinations, we’ll update this guide.
Temenos (cleric) with a scholar secondary job
Temenos paired with the Scholar secondary job turns him into a powerful magic user capable of dealing heavy damage while still providing healing and support. His natural high elemental attack makes spells like Fireball and Lightning Blast hit harder, and access to multiple elements lets him exploit enemy weaknesses more easily. Combined with his cleric abilities, this setup allows him to switch between offensive casting and party restoration without losing momentum in battle.
Through everything, Temenos carried my team with his scholar secondary. His latent power, which allows every hit on that turn to break shield is not particularly impressive when he’s just a cleric. However, once you toss the scholar’s “Elemental Barrage” skill into the mix, suddenly Temenos is able to pop boss shields like they’re nothing. At base level, Elemental Barrage hits anywhere from three to five times, but when you boost it, that number goes up. Boost your Elemental Barrage while also using his latent power and suddenly that tier-eight shield on the boss is gone.
In addition to this, Temenos as a cleric is good on his own. His EX Skill, “Prayer for Plenty” allows you to overheal, so if you have a particularly squishy member of your party, you can set them up with extra health. Not to mention that his holy damage does a ton as is.
Throné (thief) with hunter secondary job
Throné with the Hunter secondary job gains a sharp mix of speed and power. Her natural agility as a thief pairs perfectly with the Hunter’s strong physical attacks and precision-based skills. This setup lets her exploit enemy weaknesses with bows and elemental arrows while still stealing and debuffing enemies when needed. High accuracy and critical hits make her an excellent damage dealer who can also control fights with status effects and item steals.
This one isn’t really an ideal, perfect choice, but I just liked it a lot. Throné became a master of busting shields, as this secondary job gave her a wide spread spread of weapons to use (dagger, sword, axe, and bow all together). In addition to this, using hunter’s “Precise Shot” and her own “HP Thief” made it so she could multi-hit successfully and often.
Throné also becomes the queen of debuffing (which she kind of already was, as a thief), since hunter adds “Leghold Trap” to her repertoire. Leghold Trap sets it so that the enemy goes last in the turn order, which is great if you’re struggling to break a boss.
Pair all her debuffing and breaking skills with her latent power, that allows her to act twice, and you’re able to both deal damage while also keeping the enemy down and out.
Hikari (warrior) with armsmaster secondary job
Hikari benefits greatly from pairing his Warrior job with the Armsmaster secondary, creating a powerhouse of physical offense and adaptability. The Armsmaster’s weapon variety complements Hikari’s strong stats and ability to learn Skills from defeated foes, giving him access to almost every weapon type. This combination allows him to exploit enemy weaknesses with ease while maintaining high damage output through powerful multi-hit attacks and weapon techniques. It also provides excellent coverage in long battles, as Hikari can switch between weapons to sustain pressure and handle different enemy defenses.
As a warrior, Hikari already has high physical damage stats and is just generally a monster when it comes to using physical weapons. This takes it a step further, giving him the full arsenal of weapons to use as his disposal, and boosted attack.
This comes with a caveat, as you need to specifically unlock armsmaster by bringing a man in Gravell an ancient weapon. This job won’t unlock until you are around in your mid-40s, but once you get it, it’ll turn Hikari into a beast.

Agnea (dancer) with a merchant secondary job
Agnea paired with the Merchant job creates a powerful mix of support and damage potential. Her high speed and charisma allow her to act quickly, providing buffs and healing through her primary skills, while the Merchant’s ability to donate BP and use money-based attacks gives her a flexible role in battle. This setup lets her sustain the team’s resource flow and contribute consistent offense, making her valuable in both long fights and quick encounters.
This isn’t anything particularly special combat-wise, but it is great for money making. Agnea’s latent ability allows her to change single-target skills into multi-target skills. Pair this with merchant’s “Collect” ability, and now you can nab money from multiple foes in one turn.
You can also use the “Boost-Start” support skill from merchant to allow Agnea to start with more BP every fight, which you can use to gamble with “Bewildering Grace,” but to be honest, there’s a better strategy for that …
Partitio (merchant) with a dancer secondary job
Partitio gains a lot of flexibility with the Dancer secondary job, blending strong support and resource generation. His Merchant skills supply powerful BP recovery and money-based attacks, while the Dancer’s buffs raise his team’s offensive and defensive stats. The extra elemental options also let him exploit enemy weaknesses more easily. This pairing creates a balanced mix of economic control, team boosts, and adaptability in both long battles and exploration.
This is more of a cheesy choice if anything, but if you love to gamble, this is the job combo fro you. Partitio’s latent power allows him to max out his BP gauge, and one of his merchant support skills also allows him to start battle with a full latent power gauge.
Combine this when the random effects of dancer’s Bewildering Grace and now you have a very fun way to play. Bewildering Grace “causes a curious effect” to occur, and if you boost it, more things will happen. The effects are completely random and can help you a ton – or quite literally kill your entire team.

The positive effects of Bewildering Grace include healing your whole party, turning enemy monsters into rare monsters (like Caits), or the coveted EXP x100 multiplier. That does exactly what you think it does: it multiplies your EXP from that battle times 100. We only got that once in the countless times of using Bewildering Grace, but it shot our party up from around level 40 to level 50. Yowza.
How to unlock secret jobs like Armsmaster and Inventor
Secret jobs like Armsmaster and Inventor in Octopath Traveler 2 are unlocked through specific quests and locations, distinct from standard job guilds. They require exploration, path actions, and item collection rather than just JP spending.
Inventor Unlock
Head to the Inventor Guild in the northeast part of East New Delsta Highroad (Brightlands, accessible early via Throné’s starting area). Speak to the NPC inside the abandoned building to get the license instantly. Unlock skills by delivering requested key items (like parts for inventions) to the guild master, which enable unique contraptions with cooldowns for buffs, debuffs, or multi-weapon attacks.
Armsmaster Unlock
Travel to Gravell in the northeastern Wildlands (higher-level area around lvl 45). A debt collector blocks the blacksmith’s home in the town center-use Hikari’s Challenge, Throné’s Ambush, Castti’s Soothe, or Ochette’s Provoke to remove him. Speak to the blacksmith inside, then collect Rusty Weapons scattered worldwide (e.g., from chests or enemies). Deliver them to forge Divine Weapons; the first one grants the license, and each subsequent unlocks powerful skills tied to the equipped weapon, enabling all physical weapon types.
Other Secret Jobs
-
Conjurer: After finishing Hikari’s story, climb the Five-Tiered Tower right of Ku’s castle entrance. Defeat five bosses (save between floors) to reach and beat the Conjurer.
-
Arcanist: Sail to The Lost Isle (easternmost island, post-game access). Defeat the whirlpool boss at night (lvl 50 recommended), follow the blue path, and meet the Arcanist.
These jobs shine in late-game builds but need preparation due to item/skill gating.
Where to find all Rusty Weapons for Armsmaster
There are six Rusty Weapons in Octopath Traveler 2, each hidden in specific high-level areas, optional dungeons, or behind path actions. Deliver them to blacksmith Porta in Gravell (Wildlands, Danger Level 45) after clearing the debt collector outside his home-he’ll restore them into Divine Weapons, unlocking Armsmaster skills usable only when that weapon is equipped.
Rusty Sword Location
Complete the “Sword in the Stone” side story in Winterbloom (Winterlands). Get a Sturdy Pickaxe from the Oresrush armorer via Partitio’s Hired Help or Throné’s Steal, then speak to the woman by the stone; she’ll pull it out. Alternatively, recruit four NPCs for a party of eight to yank it free. Restores to Conqueror’s Sword.
Rusty Dagger Location
Sail to Shipwreck of the Empress (northern seas from Crackridge Harbor: lvl 48 area). Sneak or fight northwest inside the wreck to a chest by a desk. No boss required. Restores to Emperor’s Blade.
Rusty Axe Location
In Quicksand Gaol (west from Sai in Western Sai Sands: lvl 30). Defeat the Lord of the Sands boss in the antlion pit to access the chest. Restores to Lionheart’s Axe.
Rusty Polearm (Lance) Location
Timberain Castle Town Square (lvl 45+). West in the lower area, duel/defeat/challenge the Elderly Soldier guarding the tower stairs (use Hikari’s Challenge, Agnea’s Entreat, etc.) for the chest. Restores to Warlord’s Spear.
Rusty Bow Location
Enter Nameless Village (north Tropu’hapu), canoe south to Sinking Ruins dungeon (lvl 46). Beat the optional boss at the end for the chest. Restores to Thunderlord’s Bow.
Rusty Staff Location
Seat of the Water Sprite (Borderfall, behind waterfall from Flamechurch docks via ladders: lvl 26). Climb north, descend the long ladder, go south to the chest-no boss. Restores to Spiritlord’s Staff.
Prioritize lower-level ones first; ship access needs story progress. Full set maximizes Armsmaster versatility across all weapons.
