You can assign different spells to the quick-cast slots by highlighting a slot and selecting a new spell from your available options. On consoles, this is done by holding the trigger to bring up the spell wheel, while PC players can use the corresponding key. Managing multiple spell sets allows quick switching during combat or exploration, helping adapt your loadout to different challenges.

To switch your spells in Hogwarts Legacy, press “T” on PC or “Right” on the D-Pad on Consoles to see all of your spells.

  • PC – Simply drag and drop a spell into an unlocked slot
  • Console – Hold the right trigger and use the D-Pad to select which hotbar you want to change. Hover your cursor over the desired spell, and press the button that you want to equip it to.

How to get more spell slots in Hogwarts Legacy

You can gain more spell slots in Hogwarts Legacy by progressing through the main story and completing Professor Assignments, which reward you with additional spell sets. Each set allows you to equip and swap between different spells during combat or exploration. You can have up to four active spell sets available, giving you access to sixteen spells at once. Managing these slots strategically helps you adapt to different challenges, from duels to puzzle-solving.

In Hogwarts Legacy, you start out with four spell slots, but you can unlock more spell slots in the talent tree.

First, complete the main story quest “Jackdaw’s Rest” to unlock the talent section in your field guide. (This is the same quest you need to complete to get your first broom.)

Once you reach level five, you’ll gain one talent point every time you level up, and you’ll need three talent points to increase your spell slots all the way to 16.

Select the Core tree and find the spell slot upgrades (two in the level five section and one in the level 16 section). Use a talent point to acquire the spell slot upgrades to increase your spell slots to 8, 12, and 16 respectively.

As noted above, to unlock some of the spells in Hogwarts Legacy, you’ll need to head to Hogsmeade and purchase items from the shops there.

On numerous occasions in recent years, billionaire and Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling has taken public stances against inclusive transgender laws and trans rights, and has written fiction that has been condemned by LGBTQ organizations for its use of harmful anti-trans tropes. Hate crimes, as well as legislation that denies the rights of trans people, have become more prevalent in the U.K. since 2019, and, more recently, in the United States as well.

According to an FAQ from Hogwarts Legacy publisher Warner Bros. Interactive – the parent company of Avalanche Software, the game’s developer – Rowling is “not directly involved” with the creation of Hogwarts Legacy. Regardless, the sales and widespread attention generated by a AAA video game will benefit Rowling, and that has led some fans to decide not to buy the game. Best spell combinations for combat

For raw damage and control, the most reliable spell combinations in Hogwarts Legacy revolve around setting enemies up (control/force), then cashing out with big damage spells and Ancient Magic. Below are strong, easy-to-use cores you can build your loadouts around.

Core single-target burst combos

These are for deleting one target quickly (trolls, bosses, elites).

  • Levioso โ†’ Descendo โ†’ Diffindo

    • Levioso lifts and disables, Descendo slams for high impact damage, Diffindo finishes with a huge slicing hit.

    • Works especially well if you have talents that boost airborne damage and Diffindo’s projectile width.

  • Glacius โ†’ Diffindo (or Bombarda)

    • Glacius freezes and massively increases damage taken; Diffindo/Bombarda then hits like a truck.

    • Ideal when you want to spend one control cooldown for maximum payoff.

  • Crucio โ†’ Glacius โ†’ Diffindo

    • For dark builds: Crucio applies a long DoT and curse; Glacius locks them in place; Diffindo capitalizes on both the curse and freeze bonus.

    • Any enemies cursed by talents will also melt to a single Avada Kedavra afterward.

Crowd control and juggling combos

Use these when surrounded or when you need a mix of safety and AoE damage.

  • Accio โ†’ Incendio โ†’ Depulso (or Flipendo)

    • Accio pulls targets into melee, Incendio’s short-range blast burns a group, Depulso/Flipendo sends them flying or buys space.

    • With Incendio mastery, this becomes a strong close-range AoE nuke.

  • Levioso โ†’ Depulso (or Descendo) โ†’ Confringo

    • Levioso suspends, Depulso slams them into walls/ledges or knocks them back, Confringo finishes at range and can hit multiple targets with talents.

    • Great mix of control, environmental kills, and ranged follow-up.

  • Transformation โ†’ Depulso (or Bombarda)

    • Turn an enemy into an object, then immediately shatter it with Depulso or blow it up with Bombarda.

    • Acts like a near-instant kill on many standard enemies.

Shield-breaking and mixed-element strings

These help you chew through shields and different resistances while staying aggressive.

  • Accio โ†’ Descendo โ†’ Glacius โ†’ Incendio

    • Accio breaks purple shields, Descendo adds impact damage, Glacius freezes, Incendio detonates the frozen enemy for strong burst.

    • You apply both force and elemental damage, so it works well in mixed enemy packs.

  • Expelliarmus โ†’ Ancient Magic Throw โ†’ Glacius โ†’ Diffindo

    • Expelliarmus strips weapons, Ancient Magic Throw uses them as projectiles, Glacius freezes, Diffindo finishes.

    • Particularly strong against humanoids (goblins, dark wizards).

Stealth and opener combos

These help you thin groups before full combat starts or front-load damage.

  • Disillusionment โ†’ Petrificus Totalus (repeat)

    • Pick off several enemies silently before they even aggro.

    • After you’re revealed, swap to your main combat diamond.

  • Glacius โ†’ Petrificus Totalus

    • In open combat, you can freeze a target and then run up and use Petrificus Totalus for a pseudo-stealth one-shot.

    • Very safe way to remove one priority target from the fight.

Dark arts “delete the room” combo

If you’re using Unforgivables and curse talents:

  • Crucio (or Imperio) โ†’ apply extra curses (e.g., via Flipendo/Expelliarmus/Descendo talents) โ†’ Avada Kedavra

    • Crucio/Imperio mark targets as cursed; specific talents let other spells curse as well.

    • A single Avada Kedavra can then wipe every cursed enemy at once.

How to build your spell diamonds

For general combat, a balanced four-spell set could look like:

  • Damage: Diffindo or Bombarda

  • Control: Levioso or Glacius

  • Force: Accio or Depulso

  • Utility/Defense: Expelliarmus or a curse (Crucio/Imperio)

Then keep a second diamond focused on Room of Requirement/utility

Best spell combos for trolls and bosses

Trolls and bosses are all about punishing openings with big burst and staying mobile. For them, prioritize high-damage red spells, defense timing, and Ancient Magic.

General rules vs trolls and bosses

  • Always watch for rock throws (trolls): block with Protego but do not immediately Stupefy, then use Ancient Magic Throw to hurl the rock back and stun them for a long damage window.โ€‹โ€‹

  • Dodge red (unblockable) attacks, block yellow ones with Protego, and save your strongest combo for when they are stunned or recovering from heavy swings.

  • Load at least 2-3 red damage spells (Diffindo, Confringo, Bombarda) and 1-2 defensive/control tools (Protego, Glacius, Expelliarmus).

“Ice and Slice” single-target nuke

This is widely considered the highest safe damage combo for large enemies.

  • Core combo: Glacius โ†’ Diffindo

    • Glacius applies a big damage multiplier; Diffindo’s base damage is extremely high, so the two together chunk trolls and bosses hard.

    • Even though trolls don’t freeze solid, you still get the bonus damage and brief slow, letting you line up the slice.โ€‹

  • Recommended 4-spell bar around it:

    • Glacius (setup), Diffindo (main hit), Confringo or Bombarda (backup damage), one shield-breaker/utility like Expelliarmus or Accio (for general fights).

Non-dark high-damage rotation vs trolls

Use this if you’re not running curses.

  1. Force a stun window

    • Troll: block the thrown boulder, then Ancient Magic Throw it back to stun.โ€‹โ€‹

    • Boss: bait a long animation (overhead smash, charge), dodge/Protego, then counterattack during recovery.

  2. Burst combo

    • Glacius โ†’ Diffindo (main nuke).

    • While they recover: Confringo/Bombarda on cooldown, plus Basic Cast to build Ancient Magic meter.

  3. Repeat

    • Keep Glacius and Diffindo staggered so at least one of them is ready for each stun window.

Suggested boss/troll bar (non-dark):

  • Glacius, Diffindo, Confringo, Bombarda or Expelliarmus.

Dark arts setup for big enemies

If you use Unforgivables and curse talents, you can shred bosses even faster.

  • Core idea: stack curses, then delete or melt.

    • Crucio for long DoT and curse, Imperio to make the boss’s ally fight for you, then spam high-damage spells like Confringo while they’re cursed.

    • On regular large enemies (like trolls in the open world), multiple curses plus Avada Kedavra can instantly kill them when available.

Example “dark boss” bar:

  • Crucio, Imperio, Confringo, Diffindo (with talents that spread or apply curse).

Practical troll-specific tips

  • Don’t waste purple control spells on trolls; they largely ignore being juggled, so focus on raw damage reds and defensive timing.โ€‹โ€‹

  • Use Flipendo or a well-timed dodge after the troll’s overhead slam to stay safe, then punish with Glacius โ†’ Diffindo or Confringo spam while it recovers.โ€‹โ€‹

  • Always “throw, throw, throw”: any highlighted objects, dropped weapons, or stunned windows are chances for Ancient Magic Throw free damage between spell cooldowns.โ€‹โ€‹

If you tell me which difficulty you’re on and whether you use dark arts, I can give you a specific 4-spell bar and step-by-step rotation tailored to your build.
