How to use an amiibo in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

To use an amiibo in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, open the game’s menu and select the amiibo rune from your abilities wheel. Hold your figure above the right joystick on the Nintendo Switch controller, where the NFC touchpoint is located. Once scanned, a special effect will trigger, dropping items such as weapons, materials, or exclusive cosmetic gear near Link. Each amiibo can be scanned once per day, so returning players can collect rewards regularly.

As with Breath of the Wild, you can scan amiibo from your ability wheel to gain bonus items – some of which are themed to previous Legend of Zelda games. (If amiibo scanning is disabled for you, you can enable scanning functionality within the Options menu.)

After selecting the amiibo “a” logo, from the wheel, you can hold the amiibo against Nintendo Switch logo on the center of your pro controller or against the right control stick on your Joy-Con (or Switch Lite).

How do amiibo rewards work in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

Scanning an amiibo in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom rewards players with special items that can include materials, weapons, paraglider fabrics, or unique armor pieces inspired by past Zelda games. Each compatible amiibo spawns a treasure chest and extra materials around Link, and rewards can vary daily. Some rarer amiibo offer exclusive cosmetic gear, such as themed outfits or weapon designs that reference classic titles in the series.

Amiibo rewards range from paraglider fabric to armor, weapons or materials (like ancient blades), depending on the figure in question.

For example, scanning the Majora’s Mask Link amiibo grants you the chance to themed fabric for your paraglider, or the Fierce Deity set. Beyond that, amiibo often also have a theme running through their respective characters – such as most Link amiibo dropping a type of generic sword, or Zelda amiibo granting minerals, herbs and flowers.

Know that each respective reward is not guaranteed each time you scan, meaning you have to continue tapping amiibo multiple times in order to unlock all related items.

With a once-per-day scanning limit per individual amiibo, it could take a while to unlock everything within that figure’s reward pool. However, the good news is pretty much everything an amiibo can unlock, can also be found in-game – so see this as an additional shortcut to get various themed items, albeit with a dash of luck involved. The exception to this is paraglider fabric, which is exclusive to amiibo.

How to unlock amiibo scanning ability in TOTK

To unlock the amiibo scanning ability in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (TOTK), you first gain access early in the game upon receiving Zelda’s Purah Pad during the “Find Princess Zelda” main quest on the Great Sky Island.

Enabling Amiibo in Options

Press the (+) button to open the pause menu, select System, then Options (third option down). Toggle “amiibo” at the top to “On” and confirm-this activates the feature immediately.

Using the Ability

Hold L to open the ability wheel; select the amiibo icon (unlocks with Purah Pad). Aim the white circle at a clear ground spot (avoid obstructions, temples, or certain controllers like wired Pro if NFC issues arise). Tap any Zelda amiibo to the right Joy-Con stick (or Pro Controller center) to spawn a chest with daily randomized rewards-once per 24 hours per amiibo.

Where is the amiibo rune on the ability wheel

In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the amiibo rune appears on the ability wheel after enabling it in the Options menu.

Locating the Icon

Hold the L button to open the wheel; the amiibo icon (a small “a” or amiibo symbol) is positioned on the far right side, next to other utilities like the map. Select it by rotating the right stick to highlight and release L.

Activation Steps

Aim the white targeting circle at clear ground, then tap your amiibo to the Joy-Con’s NFC spot (right stick area). It won’t work in obstructed areas like shrines or skies.
