Our Black Myth: Wukong beginner’s guide will help you start your journey (to the West) as the Destined One with tips from our first 15 hours with the game. We’ve got hints and advice on level layouts, the (confusing) crafting mechanic, fast travel, and your equipment.
Your progress is linear
In Black Myth: Wukong, your progress is linear, meaning you advance through the game by completing each of the six chapters in sequence. The game guides you from one major boss encounter to the next, gradually unlocking new abilities, equipment, and spells as you move forward. This structure ensures you gain and master new tools methodically without feeling overwhelmed, and if you find certain enemies too difficult, you can always return later after becoming stronger. Additionally, the fast travel system between shrines lets you revisit previous areas easily, but the core progression remains a straightforward journey through the story’s chapters.

That’s not going to work for most fights, but it’s an important lesson about how the game works – you’ll get a lot more powerful and have more skills to draw from as you progress (linearly).
If you hit a hard enemy or boss, you can always come back later once you’re a bit stronger. Which brings us to.
Fast travel is weird with no map
Fast travel in Black Myth: Wukong feels unusual due to the absence of a traditional map. Instead of selecting destinations from a map interface, players rely on Keeper’s Shrines scattered throughout the world to fast travel. These shrines act as checkpoints where you can offer incense and then teleport between previously visited locations. Without a map to provide an overview, players must remember the names and locations of these shrines to navigate efficiently. This design choice adds a layer of challenge and immersion but can make fast travel feel less straightforward compared to modern RPGs with instant map-based teleportation.
You can (fast) travel from any shrine to any other shrine you’ve previously visited. But there’s no map, so it’s a little awkward at first.
When you choose to travel, you’ll just get a list of the names of shrines and their region. The names are descriptive enough, though, so it’s not too hard to figure out where you’re going.
Clothes make the Monkey
In Black Myth: Wukong, clothing and gear play a significant role beyond mere aesthetics-they directly impact your combat effectiveness. Each piece of apparel, including head, torso, legs, and arms gear, offers unique benefits such as increased damage or enhanced speed. Moreover, wearing multiple pieces from the same set can activate powerful set bonuses, making it crucial to choose your outfit strategically to suit your playstyle and the challenges ahead. As you progress and unlock new crafting blueprints at shrines, upgrading and customizing your gear becomes essential to mastering the Destined One’s journey.
As you progress through Black Myth: Wukong and defeat bosses, you’ll unlock new equipment to craft at shrines. You’ll only ever fight with one weapon – various versions of a staff – so those are easy enough to understand. The clothes – gear for your head, body, legs, and arms – are a bit more interesting.
