Sorcerer Rogier waits in the shadowy halls of Stormveil Castle, but his quest in Elden Ring leads far deeper than most Tarnished expect. What begins as a simple encounter with a courteous mage soon unravels into a dark investigation of forbidden history, secret assassins, and the roots of the Shattering itself. Miss a step, and Rogier’s fate-and the lore he unveils-could vanish forever.
As a prerequisite to starting this quest, you must have not talked to Ranni the Witch before completing the first steps.
In this Elden Ring guide, we’ll show you every step of Rogier’s quest.
Rogier questline steps in Elden Ring
Rogier’s questline in Elden Ring begins when you meet Sorcerer Rogier in a chapel within Stormveil Castle. After speaking with him, defeat Godrick the Grafted and return to the Roundtable Hold, where Rogier will reward you with Rogier’s Rapier +8 and offer new dialogue. To progress, explore the area beneath Stormveil Castle from the Liftside Chamber Site of Grace, descending through hidden paths to find a giant rotting face and a bloodstain that reveals critical lore. Share your findings with Rogier, then speak with Fia to learn about the Black Knife Catacombs. Retrieve the Black Knifeprint from the catacombs and give it to Rogier, who will then send you to meet Ranni at Caria Manor. After speaking with Ranni and reporting back, Rogier’s health will decline, eventually leading to his death and leaving behind his Spellblade set and a letter tied to another questline. Be careful not to start Ranni’s quest before Rogier instructs you, as this can lock you out of completing his story.
Here’s a list of all the steps you need to go through in order to complete Rogier’s quest. Besides showing the inner parts of the Stormveil Castle dungeon, progressing this quest takes you as far as Liurna of the Lakes.

Where to start Rogier’s quest in Elden Ring
To begin Rogier’s quest in Elden Ring, you need to find Sorcerer Rogier inside Stormveil Castle. Progress through the castle until you reach the Rampart Tower Site of Grace, then head down the stairs and make your way across the rooftops to a chapel, where Rogier is waiting near the altar. Speak to him here-he acts as a vendor at first, but this initial meeting is essential to start his questline. Afterward, continue through the castle and defeat Godrick the Grafted; this prompts Rogier to relocate to the Roundtable Hold, where you can continue his quest.

Inside Stormveil Castle, from the Rampart Tower Site of Grace, go north and down the stairs to access the roof of the church. Be careful with the Warhawks in your path. You can enter using one of the windows or use a ladder on the southeast side to access the church. If you choose the latter, you’ll have to defeat the patrolling units. Otherwise, they can follow you inside the church and attack Rogier.

Once you’re inside the church, talk to Sorcerer Rogier near the central table, as shown above.
Defeat Godrick the Grafted
After meeting Rogier in Stormveil Castle, you must defeat Godrick the Grafted to progress his questline. Godrick is the main boss of Stormveil Castle and the first Shardbearer Demigod you are likely to face in Elden Ring. The fight is challenging, with Godrick using sweeping axe attacks and, in his second phase, unleashing powerful fire attacks after grafting a dragon head onto his arm. Summoning Nepheli Lou just outside the boss room can provide valuable assistance and a distraction during the battle. Once Godrick is defeated, you will receive Godrick’s Great Rune and the Remembrance of the Grafted, and Rogier will move to the Roundtable Hold, where his questline continues.

Your next objective is to fight and defeat the final boss in Stormveil Castle, Godrick the Grafted. This is the second major boss you’ll have contact with, and the encounter is significantly tougher than Margit, the Fell Omen. If you need help with the fight, be sure to check our guide on how to beat Godrick.
Talk to Rogier in Roundtable Hold
After you defeat Godrick the Grafted in Stormveil Castle, Rogier relocates to the Roundtable Hold, where you can find him sitting on the balcony east of the central room. Speak with him here and select the “I’ve defeated Godrick” dialogue option when it appears. Rogier will congratulate you on your victory and reward you with Rogier’s Rapier +8, marking a key step in his questline. Additionally, he offers to share his knowledge of magical battle arts and will provide further lore about the events surrounding the Night of the Black Knives if you continue his quest. Be sure to talk to him before progressing too far with Ranni’s quest, as this can impact the completion of Rogier’s storyline.

With Godrick defeated, it’s time to go to Roundtable Hold. Teleport there if Melina has already taken you there, or visit a site of grace for her to appear and invite you. You can find Rogier sitting on the balcony east of the central room. Talk to him and choose the “I’ve defeated Godrick” dialogue option once it’s available. Rogier rewards you with the Rogier’s Rapier 8 and ends the conversation.
Explore beneath Stormveil Castle
To continue Rogier’s questline, you must explore the hidden depths beneath Stormveil Castle. Start from the Liftside Chamber Site of Grace and take the nearby lift, then use a ledge to access a window on the right side. Follow the path through the outside area, descending past bats and across beams until you reach the lowest level. Here, you’ll navigate through debris and statues, facing off against a mini-boss before finding a large chamber at the bottom. Interact with the mysterious bloodstain in this chamber to uncover the grim fate Rogier encountered, which is crucial for advancing his story.
To progress Rogier’s questline, you need to visit an underground section of Stormveil Castle, where you can learn about what happened to Rogier.
Teleport to the Liftside Chamber Site of Grace, take the lift on the left, and, in the next area, use the ledge to access a window on the right side. From there, turn right and follow the only available path.

Eventually, you got to an outside area with a giant hole in the ground – you’re above the jars. Go to your left and take the door beside two corpses with a Smithing Stone [1] and a Golden Rune [2]. In this next room, make your way down paying attention to the enemies spread all around you. Leave the room, turn left, and platform your way to a balcony.

On the balcony, enter the door to access an inner part of the castle. Be sure to go left first and open a shortcut to the Liftside Chamber Site of Grace. Now, you can return and go right. Use the beams to reach the lower levels until you’re on the ground.

Be careful with the rats and go ahead to find a Lesser Ulcerated Tree Spirit. Defeat it, move on, and interact with the bloodstain next to the large face.
Return to Rogier and talk to Fia
After investigating the underground depths of Stormveil Castle and discovering the mysterious corpse, return to Rogier at the Roundtable Hold and discuss your findings with him. Once you’ve exhausted his dialogue, head to Fia, who can be found in the room next to the blacksmith at the Roundtable Hold. Allow Fia to hold you and continue speaking with her until you unlock new dialogue options, including “Talk in Secret,” “Do you know…?,” and “About the Black Knifeprint.” This conversation with Fia is essential for advancing both Rogier’s and Fia’s intertwined questlines, as she will provide you with crucial information and the next steps in uncovering the secrets behind the Black Knives and the events surrounding Godwyn’s death.

Go back to talk to Rogier and ask him about the corpse under Stormveil. Then, still in the Roundtable Hold, go talk to Fia in the room beside the blacksmith. Let her hold you and interact with her until you can choose the “Talk in Secret,” “Do you know.?,” and “About the Black Knifeprint” dialogue options.
At the end of the conversation, she will give you the Knifeprint Clue, a map indicating where you need to go next
Defeat the Black Knife Assassin
After progressing Rogier’s questline to the point where you must investigate the Black Knife assassins, your next objective is to defeat the Black Knife Assassin found in the Black Knife Catacombs in Liurnia. To reach this boss, navigate through the catacombs, solving simple puzzles and avoiding traps. The Black Knife Assassin is a swift and agile opponent, so be prepared for quick attacks and evasive maneuvers. Once you defeat the assassin, you will obtain the Black Knifeprint, a key item required to advance Rogier’s quest. Return to Rogier at the Roundtable Hold and give him the Black Knifeprint to unlock new dialogue and progress the storyline further.

To complete this step, you need to visit the Black Knife Catacombs on the northeast side of Liurna of the Lakes. Inside this dungeon, there is a hidden boss. To find him, go west from the bonfire, turn left from the door, and right and the end of the corridor.
You will get to a room with three giant guillotines. Use the one in the middle to lift you up to a door. Go ahead and turn right. You can find the boss room at the end of this path behind an illusory wall.

There you face the Black Knife Assassin, a fast and deadly enemy. Defeating them rewards you with the Assassin’s Cerulean Dagger and the Black Knifeprint.
Return to Rogier
After exploring beneath Stormveil Castle and witnessing the memory at the rotting face, you must return to Rogier at the Roundtable Hold to update him on your discoveries. Speak to him about the vision, and he will reveal more about the Black Knives plot and his deteriorating condition. As his state worsens, Rogier expresses concern about falling into a deep sleep and urges you to continue the investigation he began. At this point, rest at a Site of Grace and talk to Rogier again-eventually, he will become unresponsive, and after a few more rests, you will find that he has died, leaving behind his Spellblade set, bell bearing, and a final letter that points you toward the next steps in the intertwined quests.

Once you’re in possession of the Black Knifeprint, talk to Rogier and give him the Black Knifeprint. After exhausting the dialogue, reload the game and talk to him again. This time he will tell you to look for Ranni. Ask Rogier about Ranni’s whereabouts for him to tell you that she must be hiding in a manor to the north of the Academy of Raya Lucaria.
Go to Caria Manor and talk to Ranni
After progressing Rogier’s questline to the point where he asks you to meet Ranni, your next step is to travel to Caria Manor, located in the far northwestern part of Liurnia of the Lakes. To reach the manor, follow the main road north from the Kingsrealm Ruins, passing through the “Road to the Manor” site of grace. Inside Caria Manor, you’ll need to navigate past traps, spectral enemies, and the formidable Fingercreepers until you reach and defeat the boss, Royal Knight Loretta. This victory grants you access to the Three Sisters area behind the manor, where you’ll find three towers; Ranni resides in the middle tower, Ranni’s Rise. Enter the tower, take the lift to the top, and speak with Ranni to advance both her storyline and Rogier’s quest.

This step takes you to Caria Manor. At the entrance, follow the path to the left and keep going northwest, following the road to reach the Manor Lower Level Site of Grace. From there, go southeast, climb the stairs northeast, and take the lift to find the Manor Upper Level Site of Grace. Leave the room and go northeast until you find the stairs.
Pass through some minor soldiers and a giant to fight Royal Knight Loretta. After defeating her, head to the north and reach the Three Sisters towers. You can find Ranni at the tower in the southwest part of the map. Talk to her at the top of the tower until she tells you to be gone.
Return to Rogier at Roundtable Hold
After defeating Godrick the Grafted in Stormveil Castle, Rogier relocates to the Roundtable Hold, where you can find him seated on the balcony overlooking the entrance hall. Speak with him here to receive Rogier’s Rapier +8 as a reward for your victory, and exhaust his dialogue to learn more about his ongoing investigation into the Black Knives plot. This conversation is a pivotal moment in Rogier’s questline, as it sets up the next steps involving the mysterious corpse beneath Stormveil Castle and introduces you to deeper lore surrounding the death of Godwyn and the origins of the Shattering. Be sure not to speak to Ranni the Witch before completing these steps, as doing so can prevent you from finishing Rogier’s questline.

Teleport back to the Roundtable Hold and talk to Rogier. After telling him that Ranni cast off her cursemark, he suggests that you become her vassal. Exhaust the dialogue to proceed to the next step. You can take the opportunity to talk to him about D, which gives you an item involving D’s questline.
Return to Ranni at Caria Manor
After defeating Royal Knight Loretta in Caria Manor, make your way to the Three Sisters area and enter the central tower, Ranni’s Rise, to meet Ranni the Witch. When you speak with her, mention Rogier and the Night of the Black Knives to progress his questline. Ranni will reveal some information about the cursemark and then dismiss you, refusing to share further details. At this point, return to Rogier at the Roundtable Hold to report what you’ve learned and continue his storyline.

Now, by talking to Ranni again, you can accept becoming her vassal. Know that doing so starts Ranni’s questline. When the conversation ends, talk to the spirits of the other three NPCs in the tower. Before you go, talk to Ranni again and she will mention that she is going to enter a long slumber.
Return to Rogier one last time
After progressing through Rogier’s questline and uncovering the secrets beneath Stormveil Castle, you must return to Rogier at the Roundtable Hold one final time. Here, he will express his growing concern about his deteriorating condition, hinting at his impending fate. If his dialogue does not change initially, rest at a Site of Grace and speak to him again. Eventually, Rogier will fall silent and become unresponsive. After resting and checking on him a few more times, you will find that Rogier has passed away, leaving behind his Spellblade set, his bell bearing, and a letter regarding D’s brother, marking the poignant end of his story.

In the last segment of the quest, you need to visit Rogier one last time, and he should have a new dialogue explaining how worried he is about his state. (In case his dialogue hasn’t changed, reload the game and try talking to him again.)
After this conversation, rest at the site of grace and, when you talk to him again, Rogier won’t answer you back. Repeat the process of resting at the site of grace and talking to him a few times. Eventually, Rogier dies, leaving behind his Spellblade set and his bell bearing. As Rogier’s final act before dying, he writes a letter to you talking about D’s brother.
What hidden secrets does Rogier reveal in his questline
Hidden Secrets Revealed by Rogier in His Questline
Rogier’s questline in Elden Ring uncovers several deep and hidden secrets tied to the game’s central lore:
-
Rogier investigates the mysterious Black Knife assassins, an order of women whose knives were imbued with the power of the Rune of Death.
-
By examining the Black Knifeprint, Rogier deduces that Lunar Princess Ranni orchestrated the infamous Night of the Black Knives, during which Godwyn the Golden was assassinated.
-
He reveals that, because Ranni conducted the ritual, she bears the cursemark of Destined Death on her body-a crucial detail connecting her to the game’s most pivotal events.
-
Rogier also shares lore about the sacred relic (the giant, rotting face) found beneath Stormveil Castle, linking it to the Black Knives plot and the spread of death blight.
-
Finally, Rogier’s investigation and ultimate fate highlight the dangers of tampering with the powers of death and forbidden knowledge, as he succumbs to the blight himself after delving too deeply into these secrets.
These revelations not only deepen the player’s understanding of the Night of the Black Knives but also set the stage for Ranni’s questline and the broader mysteries of the Lands Between.
What does Rogier reveal about Ranni’s involvement in Godfrey’s death
Rogier reveals that Ranni is responsible for orchestrating the Night of the Black Knives, the event that led to the assassination of Godwyn the Golden-not Godfrey, as sometimes mistakenly cited. Through his investigation of the Black Knifeprint, Rogier concludes that Ranni stole a fragment of the Rune of Death and used it to empower the Black Knife Assassins, who then killed Godwyn’s soul while Ranni simultaneously destroyed her own body. He further deduces that Ranni should bear the cursemark of death on her discarded flesh, indicating her direct involvement in the plot against Godwyn. Rogier’s findings tie Ranni to one of the most pivotal events in Elden Ring’s lore, but he does not link her to the death of Godfrey, who is a different character altogether.
