To upgrade unique items across quality tiers, you’ll need adra of the same quality tier. For example, you’ll need adra from to increase the quality tier of a unique from Common to Fine, but you’ll need awakened adra to level it up from Fine to Exceptional. The only problem is that adra is scarce, and you’ll need a lot to upgrade all of your unique items.

Here’s a breakdown of all adra tiers in Avowed, plus details about how to get adra.

All adra tiers in Avowed

In Avowed, Adra comes in four distinct tiers that correspond to the game’s major regions and the quality upgrades of unique weapons and armor. The tiers are: Basic Adra (used to upgrade from Common to Fine, found in Dawnshore), Awakened Adra (Fine to Exceptional, found in Emerald Stair), Corrupted Adra (Exceptional to Superb, found in Shatterscarp), and Adra Bán (Superb to Legendary, found in Galawain’s Tusks). Players can obtain these tiers by exploring their respective regions, defeating bosses and mini-bosses, looting chests, purchasing from merchants, and dismantling unique gear. Additionally, crafting at the party camp allows combining three pieces of a lower-tier Adra to create one of a higher tier or breaking down higher-tier Adra into lower tiers, providing flexibility in managing these valuable resources.

Adra will rise in quality as you progress to a later zone, from adra (the lowest tier) to adra bán (the highest). Check out the list below to see all tiers of adra, the quality of gear it’ll level up, and the region you’ll find it in.

You can obtain Adra in several ways: by defeating bosses and bounty targets, opening gold-glowing chests, purchasing it from merchants in major settlements, breaking down rare or unique gear, and interacting with Strangled Adra collectibles scattered across the maps. How to get adra in Avowed

Adra in Avowed is a vital crafting material used to upgrade gear across different rarity tiers. You can obtain Adra through several methods: defeating bosses and high-level bounty targets, opening golden or high-rarity chests, completing certain quests, and breaking down upgraded or unique gear to salvage Adra fragments. Additionally, Adra can be purchased from merchants in major settlements like Paradis or Fior mes Iverno, though this can be costly early in the game. Exploring the world thoroughly and interacting with collectible Strangled Adra stones also grants Adra pieces. As you progress, crafting higher-tier Adra from lower-tier ones at upgrade stations becomes essential to continue upgrading your equipment effectively.

Adra can be found as loot from challenging enemies, as a reward for quests, or as loot in hard-to-reach chests. That said, it may take a while to find adra if you’re hoping to come across it spontaneously. Instead, there are a few guaranteed ways to get your hands on some adra:

  • Buying from merchants
  • Crafting at a workbench
  • Breaking down unique items
  • Interacting with Strangled Adra.

Higher-quality adra can be found in earlier zones and lower-quality adra can be found in higher zones, but you’ll primarily find these adra in their associated zones. It’s also possible to upgrade your adra to a higher tier, but we’ll touch on that in the sections below.

Buying from merchants

Adra is sold by most merchants regardless of the items they’re selling. It’s not always found in shops, but, if a merchant does have adra in stock, they’ll usually have two to three adra for sale. The price will vary depending on the quality and its price can be fairly steep depending on your progress, so make sure to sell your hoard of gems to get some gold!

Breaking down unique items

Unique items are items that have their own stories and powerful enchantments. Because they’re so special and unique, it can be hard to separate yourself from them and break them down for materials. However, you’ll find a lot of unique items throughout your journey across the Living Lands, so we suggest to hold onto unique items you see yourself using and break down the rest for crafting materials.

To see what materials you’ll receive for breaking down an item, check the “Break Down” section in the item’s description. You can get adra from dismantling unique gear.

Crafting from a workbench

At the workbench in your party camp, you can craft higher tiers of adra, or dismantle your adra into lower tiers if needed.

To craft adra, interact with the workbench and select the “Crafting” tab. Scroll down to the bottom of the list to find adra. It requires three adra of one tier to craft an adra of a higher tier, such as using three adra to create one awakened adra and so on for the higher tiers.

If you come across a higher quality adra, but, need a lower quality adra, you can downgrade it at the workbench as well. In the crafting tab, select the mortar and pestle icon to switch to the “Downgrade” tab. Scroll down to the bottom of the list to find adra. Downgrading a higher tier adra will create three adra of the lower tier. For example, downgrading an awakened adra will create three adra.

Finding Strangled Adra

Each zone across the Living Lands contains one Strangled Adra – a giant adra monolith covered in vines. Once you find and interact with that region’s Strangled Adra, you’ll learn a little more about the voice behind the adra and receive one adra. The adra’s quality tier will vary depending on the zone you’re in, so you’ll receive higher quality adras the more you progress in Avowed.

What hidden locations in Dawnshore hide the most Adra crystals

In Dawnshore, the most Adra crystals, specifically Strangled Adra, are hidden in a few challenging yet rewarding locations:

  • Near the gate to Emerald Stair, on a ledge beside the Emerald Stair Gatehouse. This spot requires clearing vines with fire and solving electric gate puzzles inside a circular stone tunnel to access the Adra crystal.

  • In The Wildwoods, just north of Tama’s Cabin, close to the Delemgan Glade. This location is easier to reach via the nearby Rock Arch Beacon and involves climbing a natural ramp to a ridge where the Adra crystals are found.

These hidden spots are among the richest in Adra crystals in Dawnshore, often guarded by environmental obstacles or requiring specific companions or items to reach.

Which Dawnshore locations are hardest to access but richest in Adra crystals

The hardest to access yet richest Adra crystal locations in Dawnshore are typically found in areas requiring environmental puzzle-solving or exploration of hidden caves and ruins. Notably:

  • The area near the Emerald Stair gatehouse involves clearing vines with fire and solving electric gate puzzles inside a circular stone tunnel to reach valuable Adra crystals.

  • Certain Strangled Adra deposits are located inside caves or buildings that require navigating through challenging terrain or unlocking secret paths.

These locations demand more effort to reach but reward players with some of the highest concentrations of Adra crystals in Dawnshore.
