Pokémon Go Kyurem Fusion Guide Black White Forms Glaciate Attacks Energy

Guides

Unleash the ultimate power of fusion in Pokémon Go as Kyurem merges with Reshiram or Zekrom to become the formidable White Kyurem and Black Kyurem. This groundbreaking update, introduced during the Go Tour: Unova event, lets trainers harness unique Adventure Effects and exclusive moves like Freeze Shock and Ice Burn, transforming your battle strategy and exploration experience. Ready to master this epic fusion and claim these legendary titans? Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

This made its debut during the Go Tour: Unova event, but even Kyurem obtained before the event can fuse – so long as it has the right move and you have the fusion energy, you can proceed.

Just like Necrozma’s fusions, these also come with their own Adventure Effects, making them powerful not just in battle, but out of battle as well.

How to get Black Kyurem and White Kyurem in Pokémon Go

To get Black Kyurem and White Kyurem in Pokémon Go, you need to fuse Kyurem with either Zekrom or Reshiram, respectively. For Black Kyurem, you must have a Kyurem, Zekrom, 30 Kyurem Candy, 30 Zekrom Candy, and 1,000 Volt Fusion Energy. For White Kyurem, you need a Kyurem, Reshiram, 30 Kyurem Candy, 30 Reshiram Candy, and 1,000 Blaze Fusion Energy. The Kyurem must know the move Glaciate before fusion to unlock their signature moves Freeze Shock (Black Kyurem) or Ice Burn (White Kyurem). Fusion is done from Kyurem’s summary page, and once fused, the secondary Pokémon (Zekrom or Reshiram) becomes unavailable for use but remains visible in your collection. Fusion energy is earned by battling these Pokémon in raids and completing special research tasks.

To turn Kyurem into Black or White Kyurem, you’ll need to have the two Pokémon you want to fuse, along with its respective fusion energy:

  • To get Black Kyurem, you need a Zekrom, a Kyurem, 1,000 Volt Fusion Energy, 30 Kyurem Candy, and 30 Kyurem Candy
  • To get White Kyurem, you need a Reshiram, a Kyurem, 1,000 Blaze Fusion Energy, 30 Kyurem Candy, and 30 Reshiram Candy

Once you fuse your Reshiram or Zekrom with Kyurem, it won’t be available to use in battle. You can still see it on your Pokémon screen, though it’ll be greyed out to indicate that it’s busy being fused (of course).

To get the fusion energy, you’ll need to participate in raids against the respective version. Taking on Black Kyurem will give you Volt Fusion Energy and beating up White Kyurem will give you Blaze Fusion Energy. You can also get some from completing the “It’s Not Over Yet” branching research, as well as from free Fusion Energy codes before the event ends.

Keep in mind that if you want the very powerful and special moves that Black and White Kyurem know (and give them access to the Adventure Effects, as explained below), then your Kyurem must know the move Glaciate. Make sure it knows this move before you fuse it or risk wasting a ton of your resources. If you want to guarantee it has that move, then select the respective colour in the “It’s Not Over Yet” research choice.

Black Kyurem and White Kyurem Adventure Effects, explained

Black Kyurem and White Kyurem in Pokémon GO each have unique Adventure Effects that enhance gameplay during wild Pokémon encounters. Black Kyurem’s Adventure Effect, Freeze Shock, creates a 10-minute electrically charged ice field that freezes wild Pokémon in place, preventing them from moving, jumping, or attacking, which makes catching them easier and reduces wasted Poké Balls. This effect is also compatible with auto-catch devices and can be extended up to 24 hours by spending Stardust and Kyurem Candy. On the other hand, White Kyurem’s Adventure Effect, Ice Burn, slows down the shrinking of the catch circle, allowing for more precise throws and increasing the chances of landing Excellent Throws, which boosts catch success and XP gains during events. Unlike Freeze Shock, Ice Burn does not immobilize Pokémon but helps with timing for better throws. Both effects cannot be active simultaneously and provide distinct advantages depending on the player’s catching strategy.

In addition to just being some of the strongest Pokémon in the game, Black and White Kyurem both have Adventure Effects, allowing you to use them outside of battle for some unique perks.

Note that you can only use these Adventure Effects if you have the right charged move. Kyurem needs to know Glaciate before fusing in order to give its fusions access to these effects. Once fused, Glaciate will turn into its fusion’s specialty move (Ice Burn or Freeze Shock).

If the Kyurem you caught does not have Glaciate, then you can teach it the move by using an Elite Charged TM.

The Adventure Effects for the two fusions are as follows:

  • White Kyurem knows Ice Burn, which slows down the target ring when catching Pokémon for 10 minutes. This also makes the Pokémon “much easier to catch,” according to Niantic.
  • Black Kyurem knows Freeze Shock, which locks the Pokémon you’re trying to catch in place, preventing it from moving around for 10 minutes. Just like the above move, it also makes the Pokémon “much easier to catch.”

Notably, Niantic makes it clear that Pokémon will be easier to catch “including with connected accessory devices,” so if Pokémon love to run from you while using your Go or other similar accessories, these effects may be worthwhile. While not confirmed directly by Niantic, the Pokémon Go Wiki has datamined information stating that White Kyurem increases catch rate by 50%, whereas Black Kyurem only increases catch rate by 25%. (Do what you want with that information.)

Both effects cost 5,000 Stardust and five Kyurem Candy to activate. You can extend the duration of the timers on these effects by spending the aforementioned amount of resources to make it last up to 24 hours total.

Can you unfuse Kyurem with Reshiram and Zekrom?

You can unfuse Kyurem from Reshiram or Zekrom in Pokémon Go if you decide to separate them after fusion. To do this, go to the fused Pokémon’s summary page (Black Kyurem or White Kyurem) in your Pokémon Storage and select the “Separate” option. Confirming this will revert the fusion, returning Kyurem and Reshiram or Zekrom to their original forms. However, if you want to fuse them again later, you will need to pay the same cost in Candy and Fusion Energy as the initial fusion.

Yes, you can unfuse your Pokémon at any time you want from the Pokémon’s respective information screen. Just keep in mind that you will have to pay that whopping 1,000 energy cost again to fuse them again, so we recommending keeping them as is unless you really need them separated for some reason.

What else do we know about the Black Kyurem and White Kyurem Fusion in Pokémon Go?

Black Kyurem and White Kyurem in Pokémon Go are powerful fusion forms created by merging Kyurem with Zekrom and Reshiram, respectively. To perform these fusions, players need the respective Legendary Pokémon, 30 candies for each, and 1,000 units of specific fusion energy-Volt Fusion Energy for Black Kyurem and Blaze Fusion Energy for White Kyurem-earned primarily through raids against these Pokémon. The fusion inherits Kyurem’s stats and IVs, and if Kyurem knows the move Glaciate before fusion, the resulting form gains exclusive charged attacks: Freeze Shock for Black Kyurem and Ice Burn for White Kyurem, which are highly valuable in battle. Once fused, the secondary Pokémon becomes unavailable for use but remains visible in the collection grayed out. Additionally, these fused forms come with unique Adventure Effects that enhance gameplay outside of battles, such as improving Pokémon catching, making them versatile assets in Pokémon Go. Players can also unfuse the Pokémon at no cost if they wish to revert the fusion.

As well as the above explainers, here’s some extra details and notes worth taking into account about the process:

  • If you’re looking for a shiny Black or White Kyurem, you’re going to want the Kyurem to be shiny, not the Zekrom or Reshiram. The shiny is pretty dope!

  • Just like the shiny above, the stats that your fused Kyurem has comes from the Kyurem, not from the Zekrom or Reshiram. That being said, you will want to fuse the strongest Kyurem you have with possibly the weakest Zekrom or Reshiram you have. (That way you can still use your stronger Zekrom and Reshiram in raids – they’re still very good when unfused.)
  • As usual, you cannot use Freeze Shock or Ice Burn while using other Adventure Effects. Put those Necrozma and Origin Forme Dialga and Palkia away for now, as you cannot layer the effects.
  • Black and White Kyurem also cannot be traded to other players, transferred to Pokémon Home, or sent off to the professor for candy.

How can I unlock the secret to fusing Kyurem into Black or White Kyurem

To unlock the secret to fusing Kyurem into Black Kyurem or White Kyurem in Pokémon Go, you need to follow these steps:

  • Have a Kyurem and either a Zekrom (for Black Kyurem) or a Reshiram (for White Kyurem) in your Pokémon collection.

  • Collect the required candy: 30 Kyurem Candy plus 30 candy of the corresponding fusion partner (Zekrom or Reshiram).

  • Accumulate 1000 Fusion Energy of the correct type: 1000 Volt Energy for fusing with Zekrom to get Black Kyurem, or 1000 Blaze Energy for fusing with Reshiram to get White Kyurem. This Fusion Energy is earned by participating in specific raids related to the fusion partner.

  • Ensure your Kyurem knows the charged move Glaciate, as this move is necessary to unlock the fusion’s signature moves Freeze Shock (Black Kyurem) or Ice Burn (White Kyurem). You can use an Elite TM to teach Glaciate if needed.

  • Once you meet all requirements, initiate the fusion from Kyurem’s summary page in your Pokémon storage, where you will see the option to fuse with Zekrom or Reshiram.

  • Be aware that after fusion, the fused Pokémon will inherit Kyurem’s stats and IVs, not those of Zekrom or Reshiram, and the individual fusion partner Pokémon will be grayed out and unavailable for battle until you separate the fusion.

  • You can reverse the fusion at any time without cost, but refusion will require resources again.

This fusion mechanic was introduced during the Pokémon GO Tour: Unova event and operates similarly to the earlier Necrozma fusions.
