Seluvis Questline in Elden Ring Potion Choice and Nepheli Outcomes

Guides

Preceptor Seluvis’s questline in Elden Ring offers a dark and intriguing choice: after receiving a mysterious potion from him, you must decide who to give it to-Nepheli Loux, the Dung Eater, or Gideon Ofnir-each choice shaping your rewards and the fate of these characters. Delivering the potion to Nepheli or Dung Eater grants you powerful spirit ashes but halts their questlines, while giving it to Gideon safely disposes of the potion without blocking any quests, making it the most neutral option. To start, you must first unlock Seluvis’s tower by progressing Ranni’s questline, then meet Seluvis at his Rise in the Three Sisters area to receive the potion and begin this morally complex adventure.

In this walkthrough, we’ll teach you how to complete Seluvis’ quest, who you should give your potion to, how your decisions will affect other questlines, and how to get the Magic Scorpion Charm.

Elden Ring Seluvis quest steps

The Seluvis questline in Elden Ring begins after starting Ranni’s questline and involves meeting Seluvis at his tower near Ranni’s Rise. Seluvis gives you a potion that you must decide who to give it to: Nepheli Loux, Dung Eater, or Gideon Ofnir. Giving the potion to Nepheli or Dung Eater allows you to obtain their Spirit Ashes later from Seluvis’s hidden puppet cellar, but it will prevent completing their full questlines. Giving the potion to Gideon results in him disposing of it, which does not block any questlines but means missing out on those summons. After making your choice and returning to Seluvis, you can buy his sorceries and puppets, then find an amber starlight shard to progress the quest further and earn rewards like the Magic Scorpion Charm. The quest involves exploring Seluvis’s secret lair beneath his tower and interacting with his puppets, with different outcomes depending on your potion choice.

Before you dive into Seluvis’ quest, be aware that this questline is intertwined with Ranni’s, Nepheli Loux’s, and the Dung Eater’s quests in Elden Ring.

Make sure you’re confident in your choices before you progress as your choices may lock you out of other questlines. To learn more about how your actions will affect the Lands Between, check the corresponding part of the walkthrough later on thepage. For now, steps that will affect other quests will be marked with an asterisk.

A final note if you want to see the entirety of the Seluvis questline, don’t give Ranni the Fingerslayer Blade because it will lock you out of Seluvis’ quests.

  1. Start Ranni’s questline, then speak to Seluvis to receive a potion that is to be given to Nepheli Loux.
  2. Give the potion to Nepheli, Gideon, or Dung Eater.**
  3. Return to Seluvis and tell him that the deed has been completed.
  4. Find Seluvis’ hidden room, which can be found at the ruins outside of Ranni’s Rise, and interact with the message on the floor.
  5. Speak with Seluvis to learn more about his chamber and puppets.
  6. Pass some time at a grace to unlock more of Seluvis’ dialogue options.
  7. Interact with Seluvis to unlock another puppet and to learn about Seluvis’ scheme.
  8. Obtain the Amber Starlight in the Atlus Plateau.
  9. Return the Amber Starlight to Seluvis, and exhaust Seluvis dialogue to receive the Amber Draught.
  10. Give Ranni the Amber Draught, and exhaust her dialogue options.**
  11. Return to Seluvis to receive his gear.

Seluvis’ location

Preceptor Seluvis can be found in the Three Sisters area behind Carian Manor in Liurnia of the Lakes. Initially, he appears in spectral form at Ranni’s Rise, the tower in the middle of the Three Sisters, where you first meet him after starting Ranni’s questline. Later, you can find his physical form at Seluvis’s Rise, the southernmost tower in the Three Sisters region. To reach these locations, start from Carian Manor north of Liurnia, proceed through the manor, and cross the bridges leading to the Three Sisters towers. Seluvis’s Rise is southwest of Ranni’s Rise, and he will give you Seluvis’s Potion there to continue his questline.

Seluvis can be found in the southernmost tower in the Three Sisters region, which can be found to the west of Caria Manor.

If Seluvis’s Rise is locked, make sure you’ve started Ranni’s quest and interacted with everyone in Ranni’s Rise.

Who should you give Seluvis’s potion to?

When deciding who to give Seluvis’s potion to in Elden Ring, players have three main options, each with different consequences. Giving the potion to Nepheli Loux will turn her into one of Seluvis’s puppets, ending her questline prematurely but granting you the Dolores puppet Spirit Ash. Alternatively, giving the potion to the Dung Eater also turns him into a puppet, unlocking a powerful Spirit Ash summon but halting his full questline. The most practical and morally neutral choice is to give the potion to Gideon Ofnir, who will dispose of it discreetly, allowing Nepheli and the Dung Eater’s questlines to continue uninterrupted, though you will miss out on their Spirit Ashes. Ultimately, the choice depends on your playthrough priorities, but giving it to Gideon is often recommended for preserving multiple questlines.

After you’ve spoken to Selvius, he’ll give you a potion meant for Nepheli Loux, but Nepheli isn’t your only option. You can either give the potion to Nepheli Loux, Gideon Ofnir, or the Dung Eater.

  • To give Nepheli Loux the potion, you must first defeat the Omenkiller at the Village of the Albinaurics, and ask Gideon about Nepheli’s despair. If you offer Nepheli Seluvis’s potion, she’ll drink it, slump over, and become unresponsive. This will prevent you from completing Nepheli’s quest, but you’ll be able to get Nepheli as a summon later on. If you want to continue Nepheli’s questline, it might be best for you to choose a different option.
  • If you show the potion to Gideon, he will dispose of it himself, and order you to lie to Seluvis. If you choose this option, you’ll miss out on a powerful summon.
  • To give the Dung Eater the potion, you must progress through their questline past the point where you defeat them in Leyndell. Once defeated, Dung Eater will return to the Roundtable Hold, where you can give them the potion – allowing you to receive Dung Eater as a Spirit Ash later on. However, this will end the Dung Eater questline and prevent you from reaching the Blessing of Despair ending.

No matter what decision you make, Seluvis will have four sorceries available for purchase upon your return.

Seluvis’ secret room

Seluvis’s secret room is located beneath an illusory floor in the ruins near Ranni’s Rise, accessible by defeating a nearby enemy and striking the floor to reveal a hidden staircase. Inside, players find a disturbing collection of puppets, including a hidden puppet of Sorceress Sellen behind an illusory wall. After discovering this room and speaking with Seluvis, he will give you one of his puppets and open the room as a shop where you can exchange Starlight Shards for various puppets. As part of Seluvis’s questline, he gives you a potion to give to either Nepheli Loux or the Dung Eater, or you can show it to Gideon Ofnir to have it disposed of safely. Giving the potion to Nepheli or Dung Eater grants you their Spirit Ash summons but ends their questlines, while giving it to Gideon allows all quests to continue but forfeits the summons. After completing this step, return to Seluvis to progress his quest and access new sorceries for purchase.

To progress to the next step of the quest, you must locate Seluvis’ hidden chamber, which can be found at the ruins just outside of Ranni’s Rise. Make your way to the ruins northeast of Ranni’s Rise to find a flat area with a bunch of stone columns.

Roll along the floor here to reveal a staircase behind an illusionary floor. Head down the stairs and read the message in the corner of the room to find out that Seluvis has been turning people into puppets. Before you leave, hit the wall to the left of the message to reveal another illusionary wall. Inside you’ll find a puppet of the Sorceress Sellen.

Return to Seluvis in his tower and reveal to him that you’ve found his private chambers. Now that you’re an accomplice to his plot, or so he thinks, he’ll offer you a puppet of your own. Depending on who you gave the potion to before, you may be able to get Nepheli Loux puppet or Dung Eater puppet. If you don’t see your respective choice here, you may need to exhaust all of Seluvis’ dialogue options and pass some time at a grace before returning.

Seluvis’ scheme

Seluvis’ scheme in Elden Ring begins after you meet him in his tower following the start of Ranni’s questline. He gives you a potion and asks you to give it to Nepheli Loux. However, you have three main choices with the potion: give it to Nepheli, give it to Dung Eater (if his questline is advanced enough), or hand it over to Gideon Ofnir to dispose of it. Giving the potion to Nepheli or Dung Eater will end their questlines but unlocks their Spirit Ashes for purchase from Seluvis’s hidden laboratory, while giving it to Gideon preserves all questlines but forfeits the summons. To access Seluvis’s laboratory and buy the puppets, you must visit his illusion-hidden basement between Renna’s Rise and Ranni’s Rise after completing the potion task. You can only choose one recipient per playthrough, so obtaining the other requires New Game Plus. This choice affects your rewards and quest outcomes across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms alike.

The next few steps can be a little finicky to unlock, so bear with me here. You need to receive the option to buy another puppet, which can be done after you purchase his sorceries and pass time at a grace. After you purchase another puppet, you’ll have the option to learn more about Seluvis’ scheme. If this dialogue option isn’t available, you may need to pass time at a grace once again.

Seluvis will let you in on his plot to create the finest puppets to grace the Lands Between. He needs an Amber Starlight to betray Ranni, and turn the demigod into a puppet of his own.

Amber Starlight location

The Amber Starlight in Elden Ring is found in a cave northeast of the Altus Highway Junction Site of Grace on the Altus Plateau. To reach it, head east from the Site of Grace, then north through a narrow ravine into the cave, where the Amber Starlight lies beneath a statue of Malenia and Miquella, surrounded by Land Octopuses. After obtaining this key item, return to Preceptor Seluvis at his tower near Ranni’s Rise and give him the Amber Starlight. He will use it to create the Amber Draught, rewarding you with the Magic Scorpion Charm and advancing his questline. You will then be tasked with delivering the Amber Draught to a chosen character-Nepheli Loux, Dung Eater, or Gideon-each choice affecting the quest’s outcome. This questline is accessible on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.

From the Atlus Highway Junction grace, head north towards a dark tunnel, which opens up to reveal a statue of Malenia and Miquella. In front of said statue, you’ll find the Amber Starlight location. Return to Seluvis and give him the Amber Starlight to receive the Magic Scorpion Charm.

Seluvis will then give you the Amber Draught, which will turn Ranni into his oh-so-desired puppet.

Should you give Ranni the Amber Draught?

Giving Ranni the Amber Draught in Elden Ring is a significant choice with serious consequences. If you decide to administer the potion, Ranni will immediately wake up, feel betrayed, and denounce you, which ends her questline prematurely. She will become hostile and can even kill you if you persist in speaking to her, locking you out of the Age of Stars ending. Seluvis’s scheme is “completed” by this act, but you won’t gain the puppet you might have hoped for. However, it is possible to absolve yourself of this betrayal by using Celestial Dew at the Church of Vows, allowing you to continue Ranni’s questline as if the betrayal never happened. Seluvis’s questline concludes with his death and the acquisition of his gear and bell bearing. Overall, giving Ranni the Amber Draught is not recommended if you want to experience her full quest and ending.

If you decide to give Ranni the Amber Draught, you’ll “complete” Seluvis’ scheme, but you won’t end up with the puppet that you wished for. Ranni will awake from her slumber, saddened and disappointed by your betrayal. If you speak with Ranni three times, she’ll kill you and lock you out of her questline – preventing you from receiving the Age of Stars ending.

Return to Seluvis’s Rise to find that Seluvis has been dealt with, but you’ll be able to pick up his gear and bell bearing.

If you ever want to return to Ranni’s questline, you can head over to the Church of Vows and offer a celestial dew to receive absolution. After doing so, Ranni will return to her chambers at the Three Sisters, and you can continue her quest.

Who should I give Seluvis’s potion to for the best outcome in Elden Ring

For the best outcome in Elden Ring’s Seluvis questline, it is most practical to give Seluvis’s potion to Gideon Ofnir. This choice advances Seluvis’s quest without alerting Gideon, while sparing Nepheli Loux and the Dung Eater, allowing their questlines to continue uninterrupted. Giving the potion to Nepheli or the Dung Eater turns them into puppets for Seluvis, which grants you powerful Spirit Ash summons but prematurely ends their personal quests. Therefore, if you want to preserve all side quests and maintain access to Seluvis’s sorceries and puppets, giving the potion to Gideon is the optimal path.

What are the long-term benefits of giving Seluvis’s potion to Gideon in my playthrough

Giving Seluvis’s potion to Gideon Ofnir in Elden Ring offers several long-term benefits for your playthrough. Most importantly, it allows you to advance Seluvis’s questline without alerting him, while sparing both Nepheli Loux and the Dung Eater, enabling their questlines to continue uninterrupted. This means you avoid prematurely ending their stories or turning them into puppets, preserving more content and narrative depth in your game. Although you miss out on the powerful spirit summons associated with Nepheli or the Dung Eater becoming puppets, giving the potion to Gideon is the most morally neutral and practical choice, maintaining all side quests and allowing you to purchase Seluvis’s sorceries without conflict. Ultimately, this choice lets you complete Seluvis’s quest while keeping other important NPC quests intact, making it ideal for players who want to experience more of Elden Ring’s world and story.
