Hytale Darkwood Cedar Logs Guide: Finding and Obtaining Locations

Guides

Darkwood is one of Hytale’s rarest materials, prized for its shadowy appearance and mysterious origin. Getting it isn’t as simple as chopping down trees-you’ll need to venture into specific biomes, face dangerous creatures, and use the right tools to harvest it safely.

Where to find darkwood in Hytale

Darkwood comes from cedar trees found in Hytale’s cold tundra and snowy biomes, especially in yellowish, barren plains with patches of snow. Open your map and head toward these icy regions, then search for tall cedar trees with slightly bluish-green foliage, which often stand among or near redwoods but have a less reddish trunk and upward-curling needles. Chop these cedars with any axe to obtain Cedar Logs or Cedar Trunks, which count as Darkwood for crafting and workbench upgrades.

In Hytale, cedar trees yield darkwood logs. You can find cedar trees in the snowy plains of the Whisperfront Frontiers (Zone 3). Don’t forget to bring an axe with you (any quality) to chop them down.

Cedar trees look like tall, bluish-green pines. If you look closely, you can spot the pinecones between the leaves. They either spawn as homogeneous cedar forests on the brown plains or mixed with redwood in the greener areas.

A cedar forest will look like this:

A mixed cedar and redwood forest looks like this:

To tell the difference, note that redwood has a greener hue, a redder trunk, and no pine cones. The two trees pointed out by arrows are cedar trees, but the tree on their right is a redwood tree.

How to craft Darkwood Planks at Builder’s Workbench

You craft Darkwood Planks at the Builder’s Workbench by refining Cedar Logs (the “Darkwood” logs) into planks.

Step-by-step

  1. Get Cedar Logs

    • Chop Cedar trees in the cold/tundra biome (e.g., Frostmarch-type snowy regions) to obtain Cedar Logs, which count as Darkwood.

  2. Build or use a Builder’s Workbench

    • If you don’t have one yet, craft a Builder’s Workbench using stone and any tree trunks, then place it in your base.

  3. Refine into Darkwood Planks

    • Interact with the Builder’s Workbench.

    • Open the crafting/refining menu and look under the wood/refined materials section.

    • Select “Darkwood Planks” (or variants like Ornate/Decorative) and put Cedar Logs into the ingredient slot; 1 Cedar Log converts into a batch of Darkwood Planks (exact yield may vary by recipe, but it is a straight refinement, not a complex recipe).

  4. Collect and use

    • Take the crafted Darkwood Planks from the output slot and use them for building, decorations, or recipes that specifically require Darkwood Planks.

Where to find Cedar Logs in Frostmarch Tundra

Cedar Logs in Frostmarch Tundra come from Cedar trees that grow in the icy tundra forests of that biome.

How to locate Cedar in Frostmarch Tundra

  • Open your map and look for the Frostmarch Tundra: it appears as a cold, ice-marked region, often white or light-blue on the map and usually north or away from the starter temperate zones.

  • Within Frostmarch, head to tundra forest areas: light brown or yellowish-beige land with snow patches and clusters of trees, often in slightly mountainous or hilly terrain.

  • Identify Cedar trees: they appear as bluish-green conifer trees that stand out next to the darker green/redwood trees; if a tree’s foliage leans blue-green instead of deep green, that’s usually Cedar.

  • Chop those bluish-green trees with any axe to obtain Cedar Logs (which count as Darkwood Logs for upgrades and crafting).

Small tip

If you see both tall evergreens in the same snowy forest, test-chop one of each: the more blue-toned tree will drop Cedar Logs, while the deeper green ones are typically Redwood.
