Guides

A strange symbol lock guards the secrets inside the Village Chief’s Manor, hiding key story items just behind its carved icons. Here’s how to crack each combination and claim what’s waiting within this eerie corner of Resident Evil 4 Remake.

Our Resident Evil 4 remake Village Chief’s Manor combination and Crystal Marble puzzle solutions guide will help you find the solution to the combination lock, and then help you solve the puzzle lock with the Crystal Marble.

Village Chief’s Manor

The Village Chief’s Manor features a small but tricky combination lock puzzle found inside the room upstairs. To open the cabinet, players must rotate the symbols until they match the correct pattern based on clues scattered around the manor. The solution ties into story details hidden in books and notes, rewarding players with a key item needed for progress. Paying close attention to nearby symbols and written hints makes cracking the code much easier.

You’ll reach the Village Chief’s Manor at the very end of Chapter 2. When you get there, the front door is locked, so you’ll enter through the back.

After you’re done looting everything that isn’t nailed down, there are two locks to deal with – a combination lock downstairs and the bedroom door lock.

Combination lock solution

Inside the Village Chief’s Manor, you’ll find a small cabinet on the upper floor secured by a combination lock. The answer is Crop, Pig, Baby, which can be determined from the symbols on a nearby picture book. Rotate the dials until the images match this sequence, and the cabinet will open, revealing a key item needed to progress through the manor.

At the top of the stairs, there’s a typewriter (and a red herb) on your left.

A little down the hallway, there’s a book on your left with the Iluminados 4:3 file – which is also has the combination to that lock: crop, pig, and babe (as in baby).

Back downstairs, the pictograms on the lock are a little vague. The crop looks like laurel leaves, the pig looks like an armadillo, and the babe looks like a little guy facing left. Inside, you’ll find the Crystal Marble.

Crystal Marble lock solution

The Crystal Marble puzzle inside the Village Chief’s Manor requires aligning the etched patterns within the marble to match the insignia visible on the wall behind it. Rotate the sphere slowly until the shapes line up to form the church’s symbol. Once the pattern aligns correctly, the mechanism opens, granting access to the next room and advancing Leon’s progress through the manor.

Place the Crystal Marble into the bedroom door upstairs. You’ll need to spin it so the air bubbles line up with the symbol inside the lock:

  • Spin it up until it looks like the symbol upside-down
  • Spin it sideways 180°
  • Spin it down 180°

Resident Evil 4 Remake Crystal Marble Solution

The Crystal Marble puzzle follows the combination lock in Village Chief’s Manor during Chapter 2. Insert the marble (obtained from the Crop-Pig-Babe cupboard) into the round slot door upstairs to align internal bubbles with the Los Illuminados symbol.

Puzzle Location

Find the Door With Round Slot at the end of the upper-floor hallway, directly above the combination lock. Defeat any Ganados that appear before interacting.

Step-by-Step Solution

Examine the marble in your inventory first to practice rotating it and spot the bubble pattern resembling a parasite or Los Illuminados emblem.

  • Place it in the door slot.

  • Use the left stick (or equivalent) to tilt and spin the marble, grouping bubbles into a narrower cylindrical shape at one end.

  • Rotate with L1/LB (or bumpers) until the bubble formation perfectly overlays the wall symbol behind-typically facing the narrower end toward you, then aligning upright.

The door unlocks automatically upon correct alignment, granting access to the Insignia Key inside.

What to do with the Insignia Key in Village Chief’s Manor

The Insignia Key from Village Chief’s Manor unlocks three Insignia-marked doors in Resident Evil 4 Remake.

First Use (Chapter 3)

Exit the manor and use it immediately on the front gate outside to progress through the story. This leads toward the Village Square.

Second Use (Chapter 3)

In the Village Square, after the tower collapses, head east to the Town Hall door (marked with the Los Illuminados symbol). Unlocking it grants access to the church interior, Quarry, and Lake areas.

Third Use (Chapter 4, Optional)

After defeating Del Lago and gaining the boat, sail north from the dock to Lakeside Settlement. Use the key on the northern gate for loot, a Small Key, Clockwork Castellan #4, and the Forest Altar (ties into a fishing request). Sell the key afterward via the Merchant.
