Unlock the true potential of your gear in Diablo 4 with the Tempering system-a powerful crafting mechanic that lets you add and customize affixes on your Rare and Legendary equipment. Whether you want to boost your damage, enhance resistances, or tailor your build’s playstyle, Tempering offers a strategic edge by allowing you to imprint up to two affixes per item using rare Tempering Manuals found throughout Sanctuary. Ready to master this game-changing feature? Here’s everything you need to know to start crafting your perfect build at the Blacksmith.
In this Diablo 4 guide, we’re going to cover all you need to know about the Tempering system, including an explanation of how it works, if there are any prerequisites to access it, how to unlock it, and how you use the system to create Tempered items.
How Tempering works in Diablo 4
The Tempering system in Diablo 4 allows players to customize their Rare and Legendary gear by adding powerful affixes through the use of Tempering Manuals. These manuals, which can be found throughout the game world, teach recipes that can be used repeatedly to apply random affixes from the manual’s pool to eligible equipment at a blacksmith. Each item can receive up to two affixes if it is an Ancestral Legendary, while regular Rare and Legendary items can get one. Players can reroll affixes multiple times, up to a limit, to optimize their gear’s stats. This system enhances gear versatility and power, enabling players to tailor their equipment to better fit their build and playstyle.

The Tempering system is a crafting system in Diablo 4 that gives you the chance to upgrade Rare and Legendary pieces of equipment by adding new affixes to them. You can add up to two affixes per item. However, don’t expect to find common affixes such as one that increases Damage Over Time. In the Tempering system, you have access to affixes that, in general, interact with the abilities of each class.
Tempering uses recipes that come with a select list of affixes to upgrade items. While some recipes can be used by any class, most of them are specifically tied to a class. Beyond that, there are six types of recipes to temper your gear with: Weapon, Offensive, Defensive, Utility, Mobility, and Resources.
Recipes have a select list of affixes following the type to which they belong. For example, the Natural Finesse recipe, which is of the Offensive type, always has the % Damage, % Damage to Crowd Controlled Enemies, % Damage to Close Enemies, and % Damage to Distant Enemies.
By tempering an item, you add one of the affixes listed in the recipe that you chose, a completely random process. In case you didn’t get the affix you wanted, you can re-roll it – however, you’re limited to five re=rolls.
To learn recipes for your Tempering system, you need to use Temper Manuals. These are found in three rarity levels: Magic, Rare, and Legendary. When you use the Magic version of a Temper Manual, you can only temper an item with that version until you find a better one. The rarity of a recipe only determines how high the numbers you can roll can go, but they don’t change the affixes it comes with.
How to unlock Tempering upgrades in Diablo 4
To unlock Tempering upgrades in Diablo 4, you need to reach Level 15 and complete the “Tempering” priority quest, which involves traveling to Kyovashad and speaking with the Blacksmith there. Upon completing this quest, you receive your first Tempering Manual, which allows you to start applying affixes to your gear. Tempering becomes available once you have access to the Blacksmith and at least one Temper Manual, which you can find randomly throughout the game world from various activities such as events, bosses, and dungeons. After learning a Tempering Recipe from a manual, you can use it indefinitely at the Blacksmith to add powerful affixes to your Rare and Legendary items, enhancing your build significantly.

Tempering is the central crafting system in the game throughout your whole experience. You unlock the Tempering System once you have access to the Blacksmith and have acquired at least one Temper Manual.
Temper Manuals are consumable items that you need to use in order to learn the recipes for tempering. You can check the recipes you have already learned in the Codex of Power. Manuals drop from most of the content in the game, either from bosses, regular and Nightmare Dungeons, or enemies killed during Helltides.
How to use the Tempering system in Diablo 4
To use the Tempering system in Diablo 4, first unlock the Blacksmith and obtain Temper Manuals, which teach you recipes for adding affixes to your gear. At the Blacksmith, open the Tempering tab, insert the Legendary or Rare item you want to enhance, and select a Tempering recipe from your learned manuals. Each manual offers a set of potential affixes, and the system will randomly apply one of these affixes to your item. You can reroll the affix up to five times per item if the result is unsatisfactory, with additional rerolls granted for Greater Affixes on the gear. Note that Unique and Magic items cannot be tempered, and Ancestral Legendary items can receive two affixes from different manuals. Tempering is a key way to customize and improve your gear to better fit your build throughout leveling and endgame.

To use the Tempering system, first, you need to visit the Blacksmith NPC. You can start by picking the item you want to upgrade or the recipe you want to use. Depending on the type of item, certain materials are required, such as Baleful Fragments, Abstruse Sigils, and Coiling Wards, alongside more common ones, such as Iron Chunks and Veiled Crystals.
After hitting the Temper Item button, the menu will show you which affix was added. To re-roll, you just need to select the same item and recipe. (Keep in mind that you only have five attempts and if you use all of them, you can’t add another affix.) A fully tempered item can then be eligible for Masterworks.
All Temper Manuals in Diablo 4
The Tempering system in Diablo 4 uses Temper Manuals to add powerful affixes to Rare and Legendary gear, allowing for significant customization tailored to each class and build. These manuals teach recipes that contain a selection of affixes, typically between three to five, which can be applied at the Blacksmith. Temper Manuals are class-bound and come in six categories: Weapon, Offensive, Defensive, Utility, Mobility, and Resource, each providing specific types of affixes suitable for certain gear slots. Players can find Temper Manuals throughout the game world from various activities, including events, dungeons, and world bosses. Once learned, these recipes can be used unlimited times to temper gear, adding up to two affixes per item, with a limited number of rerolls to optimize the affixes gained.
Below you find the Temper Manual recipes for each class: Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue, and Sorcerer. The numbers depicted in these lists are from the Legendary version of each recipe, but note that it’s a range. We’ve included that range in brackets.
Temper Manuals – all classes
The Temper Manuals in Diablo 4 are essential items that allow players to learn Tempering Recipes, which are used to add powerful affixes to Rare and Legendary gear. Each Temper Manual corresponds to a specific class and category, such as Weapon, Offensive, Defensive, Utility, Mobility, or Resources, and contains a set of 3 to 5 potential affixes that can be applied to equipment. Once a manual is learned, its recipe can be used unlimited times at the Blacksmith to temper gear, adding up to two affixes per item. Tempering is a key customization feature that enhances build-defining stats, but affixes from one class’s manuals will not activate on gear used by another class. Temper Manuals can be found throughout the game world, especially from events, bosses, dungeons, and endgame content, and come in different qualities depending on difficulty level.

Sorcerer Temper Manuals
Sorcerer Temper Manuals in Diablo 4 are special items that unlock recipes for adding class-specific affixes to your gear through the Tempering system. These manuals are class-bound, meaning Sorcerer manuals grant affixes tailored to Sorcerer abilities and playstyle. Once learned, the recipes can be used indefinitely at the Blacksmith to add powerful affixes such as elemental damage boosts or resistances, enhancing your Sorcerer’s build. Sorcerer Temper Manuals can be found in various endgame activities like Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, world bosses, and other challenging content, making them essential for customizing and optimizing your Sorcerer’s equipment.
