Get ready to outsmart the dungeon and turn your prison sentence into a thrilling escape adventure!
When you’re in ja- ahem, gaol, you’ll temporarily lose most of your inventory, and find yourself trapped in a locked cell. The game will you there are multiple ways to escape, but won’t detail exactly how to do so.
Don’t blame us, but we’ve been in prison enough times to know exactly how to get out of gaol in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Read on for a breakdown of all the methods, plus an explanation of how to get your gear back when you’re finally out of the slammer.
Bribe the guards
To bribe the guards and get out of gaol in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you need to wait for a guard to pass by your cell and then initiate a conversation. The guard will demand a bribe, which can be quite costly-often around half of your current gold or approximately 10,000 gold-making this method expensive as the bribe amount scales with how much money you carry. Once you pay the bribe, the guard will let you go, and you can retrieve your gear on the way out. Although this is the simplest way to escape, it is generally not recommended unless you have abundant gold, as there are other less costly escape options like using a Makeshift Gaol Key or finding a weak wall to break through.

The game hints about this method the first time that you’re arrested. You can speak to the guards patrolling outside your cell as they pass by, and they’ll happily free you – in return for money.
They’ll ask for a good chunk of change, usually 10,000G (according to our testing in Vernworth). At times when we’ve had less than this, they’ve gone ahead and taken the whole lot before letting us leave.
This is a reliable way to escape, but there are other methods for getting out of gaol that are less damaging to your pockets.
Use a makeshift gaol key
The Makeshift Gaol Key in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a single-use item that allows players to unlock their jail cell door and escape from gaol without needing to bribe guards or reload save files. Players can find a Makeshift Gaol Key by smashing pots in their cell or purchase it from certain shops for 3,000 gold. Using the key makes escaping much easier, but since it breaks after one use, players may want to seek a more permanent solution, such as completing the quest “The Caged Magistrate” to obtain a reusable Gaol Key or crafting a forgery at Ibrahim’s Scrap Shop. Even without the key, players can sometimes escape by breaking cracks in the cell walls to access the sewer system, though this method is riskier due to patrolling guards.

Makeshift gaol keys are single-use items that will let you out of prison. There are a few ways to find or acquire one.
- If you’re already in jail, look around the cell for a breakable pot. There isn’t always one around, but if there is, there might be a key hidden inside.
- To cover yourself for the eventuality of gaol, you can also buy makeshift gaol keys from certain merchants. For example, Dudley near the entrance to Melve will sell you one for 3,000G.
- Lastly, you’ll get a gaol key (a permanent one that doesn’t break) at the start of “The Caged Magistrate” main quest. If you plan on doing crimes, it might be worth starting that quest.
Even though you lose pretty much your entire inventory when you’re in a jail cell, the keys will stay with you, so you can use them to make a quick getaway.
Although there are guards patrolling the jail, they don’t seem especially bothered by escapees. Once you’ve busted out of your cell, you should be able to run past them without issue, so long as you don’t linger too much.
If they do attack you, just keep running, since you won’t have any of your gear to be able to fight them off. They’ll leave you alone if you create enough distance.
Break out – literally
To break out of gaol in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you have several options that go beyond just waiting for your sentence to end. One straightforward method is to use a Gaol Key, which you might have from a quest or find in a pot inside the cell; this key lets you unlock your cell door and make a quick escape, though you must avoid guards to prevent being caught again. Alternatively, you can smash a suspicious cracked wall in your cell to reveal a secret passage leading to the sewers and ultimately outside, providing a stealthy and safe exit. If you have enough gold and want a quick but costly way out, bribing a passing guard is also possible, though it requires parting with a significant amount of money. Each method has its risks and benefits, but breaking out literally means using your environment and items cleverly to regain freedom without waiting for release.

Some cells have breakable walls that you can punch through.
These will lead down into the sewers, with a fairly easy path to follow to freedom. You might even find some valuable items down here, so it’s definitely more cost-effective than bribing the guards. Who ever said that crime doesn’t pay?
How to restore equipment after escaping gaol in Dragon’s Dogma 2
After escaping the gaol in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you don’t need to worry about recovering your equipment manually. Once you manage to leave the prison area-whether by using a gaol key, bribing the guards, or breaking through a weak wall and escaping via the sewers-your inventory and gear will automatically be restored to your character as you move far enough away from the gaol. This means you won’t have to search for your items in any chest or location inside the prison; your equipment simply returns to you upon successful escape.
As you make your escape, don’t bother trying to search for a chest containing your inventory. Once you make it to safety, one of your pawns will return all of your resources and equipment to you. However, you will need to manually equip everything again.
What’s the secret to escaping jail quickly in Dragon’s Dogma 2
The secret to escaping jail quickly in Dragon’s Dogma 2 lies in using a Makeshift Gaol Key, which can often be found by breaking pots inside your cell. This single-use key lets you unlock the cell door and slip out without paying a bribe or waiting out your sentence. Alternatively, if no key is available, look for a weak, cracked wall in your cell that you can smash through to access the sewers and escape safely, though this route may be less direct. Bribing the guards is also an option but costs a hefty 10,000 gold and is generally the least recommended method.
