Few spells prove as practical as Alohomora in Hogwarts Legacy. This charm lets you slip through locked doors and secret chambers-but before you can master the art of lockpicking, you’ll need to learn where to get it and how to crack the ingenious minigame that guards every latch.
This is one of dozens of spells in Hogwarts Legacy – and you can view all spells available in our dedicated guide.
How to get Alohomora in Hogwarts Legacy
Alohomora is learned during the main story quest “The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament,” given by Gladwin Moon. During this mission, he teaches you the spell so you can open doors and chests that have level one locks. Higher levels of Alohomora become available as you collect more Demiguise Moons scattered across Hogwarts and nearby areas. Once you have the spell, you can use it to access new areas and hidden loot throughout the game.

To learn Alohomora in Hogwarts Legacy, you need to reach the main story quest “The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament,” which can take as little as three to five hours depending on how fast you’re progressing through the quests.
When it’s available, meet the caretaker, Gladwin Moon, near the Grand Staircase’s floo flame to start the quest. During the quest, you’ll be tasked with finding Demiguise moons and getting rid of the statues for him because he is very afraid of them. He’ll teach you Alohomora to get you into the faculty tower in order to collect a few Demiguise moons.
When you have unlocked Alohomora, you can also make start on finding Daedalian Key locations.
How to pick locks in Hogwarts Legacy
To pick locks in Hogwarts Legacy, approach a locked door or chest and interact with it to begin the Alohomora minigame. You’ll see two rotating gears-move the green spark with the left stick until the inner mechanism spins smoothly, then adjust the red spark with the right stick to turn the outer wheel. Hold both in the correct positions until the lock opens. Higher-level locks require upgraded versions of Alohomora, which can be obtained by helping Gladwin Moon find more Demiguise statues.
Unlocking a lock in Hogwarts Legacy follows your typical lockpicking minigame in most RPGs. Rotate the green and red lights until their respective gears start spinning, which is how you’ll know the lights are in the right spot. The outer green ring contains the green light, which corresponds to the bottom right gear. While the inner red ring contains the red light that corresponds to the inner gear.
A tip to quickly complete the lockpicking minigame is that the correct spot for the lights can only be at the cardinal and intercardinal positions or every 45 degrees. Don’t waste your time checking the spaces in between, and rotate your lights to these positions. Check out the image below to see the possible light locations.

How to unlock level two and level three locks with Alohomora level two and three
After obtaining Alohomora level two and three from Gladwin Moon by finding additional Demiguise statues, you’ll be able to open more advanced locks around Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. These locks have more complex internal rings that require careful alignment during the minigame. Rotate both dials until the gears begin spinning steadily, indicating the correct positions. Higher-level locks demand more precision and patience, but following the same principle as basic locks will help you succeed and access new areas filled with rewards and secrets.
To lock pick level two and level three locks, you’ll need to find Demiguise statues and collect more Demiguise moons. Keep in mind that Demiguise moons can only be collected at night. Doing so allows you to unlock Alohomora level two and three respectively.
- Level Two – Bring Gladwin Moon nine Demiguise moons.
- Level Three – Bring Gladwin Moon thirteen Demiguise moons.
Locked doors aren’t the only environmental obstacles you’ll face in Hogwarts Legacy – with eye chests and Arithmancy door puzzles also standing in your way.
On numerous occasions in recent years, billionaire and Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling has taken public stances against inclusive transgender laws and trans rights, and has written fiction that has been condemned by LGBTQ organizations for its use of harmful anti-trans tropes. Hate crimes, as well as legislation that denies the rights of trans people, have become more prevalent in the U.K. since 2019, and, more recently, in the United States as well.
According to an FAQ from Hogwarts Legacy publisher Warner Bros. Interactive – the parent company of Avalanche Software, the game’s developer – Rowling is “not directly involved” with the creation of Hogwarts Legacy. Regardless, the sales and widespread attention generated by a AAA video game will benefit Rowling, and that has led some fans to decide not to buy the game. For a more in-depth explainer of the yearslong controversy leading up to Hogwarts Legacy‘s release, read AELGAMES’s breakdown.
