Mega Abdomasnow Counters Weakness Best Moveset Pokemon Go Raid Guide

Guides

Mega Abomasnow, the towering Ice/Grass Mega Evolution, chills the competition with its formidable bulk and devastating blizzard attacks in Pokémon GO Mega Raids. But beneath its frosty exterior lies a critical vulnerability-double weakness to Fire-type moves-that savvy trainers can exploit to bring this frosty giant down swiftly. Ready your hottest Fire-type counters and master its best moveset to dominate Mega Abomasnow raids and claim valuable Mega Energy before the snow settles.

The majority of Mega Pokémon have now debuted in Pokémon Go, but Mega Abomasnow still holds its place as a top-tier ice-type attacker. If you defeat this powerful opponent in Mega Raids, you’ll earn Mega Energy, which can then be used to put your own Abomasnow through the Mega Evolution process.

You’ll get another chance to battle Mega Abomasnow and earn its Mega Energy when it returns to the raid schedule from Dec. 26, 2024, to Jan. 4, 2025. We’ve rounded up everything you need to know to beat it below, including the top counters for your team.

Mega Abomasnow weaknesses

Mega Abomasnow, being a Grass and Ice-type Pokémon, has multiple weaknesses that can be strategically exploited in battles. It is especially vulnerable to Fire-type moves, which deal 2.56 times the normal damage, making Fire the most effective type against it. Additionally, it is weak to Bug, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Rock, and Steel-type moves, each dealing 1.6 times the damage. Trainers should avoid using Electric, Grass, Ground, and Water-type moves against Mega Abomasnow, as it resists these types. Utilizing strong Fire-type Pokémon with powerful Fire moves is the best approach to quickly take down Mega Abomasnow in raids and battles.

Just like its non-Mega counterpart, Mega Abomasnow has quite a lot of weaknesses that you can exploit: bug-, fighting-, fire-, flying-, poison-, rock-, and steel-type moves.

It’s best to focus on fire-type Pokémon with fire-type moves where possible, as these are super-effective and will deal even more damage to Mega Abomasnow than the rest.

On the flip side, Mega Abomasnow is resistant to electric-, grass-, ground-, and water-type moves. Avoid using these, as they won’t be very effective in battle.

Mega Abomasnow counters

Mega Abomasnow, a Grass/Ice-type Pokémon in Pokémon Go, is especially vulnerable to Fire-type moves, making Fire-type Pokémon the most effective counters in Mega Raids. Other types that exploit its weaknesses include Bug, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Rock, and Steel. Top counters feature Mega Charizard (X or Y), Mega Blaziken, Shadow Heatran, Reshiram, and Darmanitan, all equipped with strong Fire-type fast and charged moves like Fire Spin and Blast Burn. Avoid using Electric, Grass, Ground, or Water-type Pokémon, as Mega Abomasnow resists these types. Utilizing these counters will help trainers efficiently defeat Mega Abomasnow and earn Mega Energy for its evolution.

Here are some of the best counters to take down Mega Abomasnow in Pokémon Go:

  • Mega Charizard (either X or Y) with Fire Spin and Blast Burn
  • Mega Blaziken with Fire Spin and Blast Burn
  • Reshiram with Fire Fang and Fusion Flare
  • Heatran with Fire Spin and Magma Storm
  • Delphox with Fire Spin and Blast Burn
  • Chandelure with Fire Spin and Overheat
  • Darmanitan with Fire Fang and Overheat
  • Flareon with Fire Spin and Overheat

The two top counters for Mega Abomasnow are Mega Charizard (X or Y) and Mega Blaziken. If you’ve got one of these in your collection, make sure you use it. Having one of these Mega Evolution Pokémon out on the battlefield will also boost fire-type moves used by other trainers you’re competing alongside, making them incredibly valuable.

Of course, not everyone will have access to Mega Evolved Pokémon. The good news is that there are plenty of other fire-type Pokémon that can cause some serious damage. Even if you don’t have any of our recommendations in the list above, simply choose your strongest fire-type Pokémon, make sure they all know fire-type moves, and give it your best shot!

As with any Mega Raid, teaming up with other trainers is pretty much essential if you want to win. We’d recommend finding at least five high-level players with strong counters if you want to defeat Mega Abomasnow, but the more the better. You might need to look for a local Pokémon Go meetup or use the Campfire app if you’re struggling to get a big enough group together.

Finally, it’s good to know that fire-type moves will receive a damage boost when the weather is sunny or clear.

Best moveset for Mega Abomasnow

Mega Abomasnow’s best moveset in Pokémon GO focuses on maximizing its Ice-type offensive potential with the combination of Powder Snow as the fast move and Weather Ball (Ice) as the charged move, delivering high damage per second and total damage output. For a secondary option that leverages its Grass typing, Leafage paired with Energy Ball can be effective, especially in PvP battles. This moveset allows Mega Abomasnow to apply strong pressure with spammy charged attacks, making it a solid choice in raids and battles where Ice-type damage is advantageous.

Mega Abomasnow is best used as an ice-type attacker in raids, so it’s a good idea to have one that knows Powder Snow and Weather Ball (Ice) for optimal damage. If you’d rather use Mega Abomasnow as a grass-type attacker, go with Leafage and Energy Ball.

For the most part, Mega Pokémon are not allowed to enter trainer battles in the Go Battle League, so you don’t need to worry about a competitive-specific moveset for now.

There is, however, a Mega Edition of the Master League that will make a rare appearance from February 25 to March 4, 2025. If you want to use Mega Abomasnow during this limited-time League, you should run Powder Snow with Energy Ball and Weather Ball (Ice).
