What are Dynamax Pokémon?

Dynamax Pokémon are a special type of Pokémon introduced in Pokémon GO that temporarily grow to gigantic sizes during battles, a mechanic originally from Pokémon Sword and Shield. When Dynamaxed, these Pokémon gain boosted stats and can use powerful special attacks called Max Moves for a limited number of turns. In Pokémon GO, Dynamax Pokémon appear at special locations known as Power Spots, where players can engage in Max Battles to defeat and catch them. Once caught, these Pokémon can Dynamax in future Max Battles, providing strategic advantages such as healing and damage reduction moves alongside their enhanced attacks. Dynamaxing lasts for three turns in battle, after which the Pokémon returns to its normal form.

Dynamax Pokémon are a unique type of Pokémon that can be “Dynamaxed” and enter Max Battles. You can tell a Dynamax Pokémon at a glance by the unique symbol in your collection, or the Pokémon’s stats screen, which has a “Dynamax” drop-down below their weight, height, and typing information.

You cannot Dynamax existing Pokémon in your collection – instead, you must find and catch them separately. This is because, their huge size difference aside, they also use unique “Max Moves,” which can be unlocked and upgraded with Max Particles.

(As an aside, Dynamax Pokémon still have Fast and Charged moves, and can be used in battle elsewhere, such as in the Go Battle League, or in raids.)

Dynamax Pokémon are also different to Gigantamax Pokémon, which are similarly large Pokémon that also change form and use unique G-Max moves, even if they are also found in Max Battles.

In summary – getting Dynamax Pokémon is important if you want to enter Max Battles, as only Dynamax Pokémon will be accepted. Of course, if you need Dynamax Pokémon to enter a Max Battle, how do you get them in the first place?

How to get Dynamax Pokémon in Pokémon Go

To get Dynamax Pokémon in Pokémon Go, you first need to reach Trainer level 13 and complete the “To the Max!” Special Research quest, which rewards you with your initial Dynamax Pokémon like Dynamax Wooloo and Dynamax Skwovet. After this, you can start collecting Max Particles by visiting Power Spots-special locations marked on the map-to participate in Max Battles. In these battles, you face off against Dynamax Pokémon called Power Spot Bosses, and upon defeating them, you get the chance to catch these Dynamax Pokémon. Note that only Dynamax Pokémon can enter Max Battles, so having at least one is essential to join. Max Battles are in-person events requiring Max Particles to enter, and rewards include rare candy and other items. Additionally, wild Dynamax Pokémon can occasionally spawn near Power Spots, especially if other players have placed their own Dynamax Pokémon there.

You can get Dynamax Pokémon in Pokémon Go in a number of ways:

  • Completing the “To the Max!” Special Research during the “Max Out” season, which rewards a Dynamax Wooloo and Dynamax Skwovet by completing steps one and two
  • Collecting your first 1,000 Max Particles, which rewards a Dynamax Wooloo
  • Completing Max Battles and catching the Dynamax Pokémon in the subsequent encounter phase
  • If a Gigantamax Pokémon is placed at a Power Spot, Dynamax Pokémon can appear in the wild around Power Spots if one is placed in them

Though completing Max Battles is your primary source of finding Dynamax Pokémon, there is a chicken-and-egg situation you need Dynamax Pokémon to battle them in the first place. This is where the “To the Max!” research comes in – with two Dynamax Pokémon coming your way by completing the first two steps, which primarily involves finding Max Particles from Power Spots.

How to enter Max Battles in Pokémon Go

To enter Max Battles in Pokémon Go, first ensure you have at least one Dynamax Pokémon in your party and enough Max Particles, which are required to join these battles. Locate a nearby Power Spot on the map, then tap on it to enter. If you have sufficient Max Particles, tap the Battle button to join the lobby, where you will be matched with up to three other Trainers in your vicinity. Select up to three Dynamax-capable Pokémon for the battle, remembering that only these Pokémon can participate. Once four Trainers have joined or the lobby timer expires, the Max Battle will begin. During the battle, tap to perform Fast Attacks, build energy for Charged Attacks, and swipe to dodge incoming attacks. Filling the Max Meter allows your Pokémon to Dynamax for three turns, unleashing powerful Max Moves to defeat the boss and earn rewards.

Max Battles can be found a Power Spots starting Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. local time, in the same way raids can be found Gyms. To enter a Max Battle, there are two requirements:

  • Having at least one Dynamax Pokémon, as standard Pokémon will not be accepted
  • Having enough Max Particles, with entry costing 250 MP for one-star encounters

Up to four trainers total can enter a Max Battle, each with up to three Dynamax Pokémon. These encounters start similar to raids or Go Team Rocket battles, where Fast and Charged attacks will be used while a Max Meter builds. When it’s full, your Pokémon will Dynamax, and is able to make use of any unlocked Max Moves.

Note that as well as having other trainers aid you, you can also get an additional attack multiplier through any Dynamax Pokémon that have been placed at that Power Spot by other trainers.

Additionally, in Max Battles at three star difficulty or higher, if all your Dynamax Pokémon faint, they can aid those still in battle by ’cheering’ them on and boosting their Max Meters. If you fail to win the encounter, you’ll also be refunded the Max Particles spend to enter the Max Battle.

Max Battle rewards

Max Battles in Pokémon Go offer a range of valuable rewards that enhance gameplay and progression. Upon winning a Max Battle, players receive experience points (XP), Premier Balls for catching the Dynamax Pokémon, and various useful items such as Rare Candy, Golden Razz Berries, Revives, and Super Potions. Players at Trainer Level 31 or above can also earn Candy XL for the Pokémon they defeat. Additionally, Max Battles reward Max Particles, which are essential for powering up Dynamax Pokémon by upgrading their Max Moves. Players can also earn guaranteed XL Candy from defeated Pokémon and have the option to double their rewards by spending Poké Coins. Completing Max Battles successfully allows players to catch powerful Dynamax Pokémon and place one of their own Pokémon at Power Spots to assist others and earn further rewards over time.

Once the encounter is complete, you’ll be rewarded the following:

  • Consumable items (including the likes of Golden Razz Berries and XL Candy)
  • XP (increases based on difficulty)
  • Premier Balls (used to catch the Dynamax Pokémon you just fought)

Unique to Max Battles is the chance to double the rewards – including the number of Premier Balls to be used in the subsequent catch phase – for 100 PokéCoins.

There are then two specific Dynamax Pokémon-related rewards:

  • You can place a Dynamax Pokémon in the Power Spot, which will then assist others in their Max Battles, as well as increase the chances of wild (regular) Pokémon appearing around that Power Spot. This placed Pokémon will return to you after assisting in a certain number of Max Battles, or after the Power Spot closes.
  • The chance to catch the Dynamax Pokémon you fought in the Max Battle, using the set number of Premier Balls offered, before it flees.

In summary – Max Battles are an opportunity to get more Dynamax Pokémon, as well as earn some additional items and XP.

Can you solo Max Battles, or battle Max Battles remotely?

You can participate in Max Battles solo or with up to four players, including yourself, each bringing up to three Dynamax Pokémon to the battle. Soloing is possible, especially for lower-tier bosses like one-star Max Battles, which can often be defeated by a single well-prepared Dynamax Pokémon; however, higher-tier battles such as three-star Max Battles are more challenging and may require a team or strong strategy to solo successfully. Currently, Max Battles cannot be joined remotely using Remote Raid Passes-you must be physically present at a Power Spot to start a Max Battle, limiting participation to local play only. However, recent updates have introduced the ability to join Max Battles remotely with a Remote Raid Pass and the usual Max Particle cost, expanding accessibility for players who cannot visit Power Spots in person.

As with raids in gyms, Max Battles found at Power Spots will range in difficulty, with a variety of one star battles that, provided you have a strong enough team and / or the right counters, should be beatable solo.

How can I efficiently gather Max Particles for Max Battles in Pokémon Go

Efficient Ways to Gather Max Particles in Pokémon Go

1. Visit Power Spots Regularly

  • Power Spots are special map locations marked with a purple icon and large “X.” Interact with these to collect Max Particles-typically 100 MP per visit, with an extra 20 MP bonus for your first interaction of the day at each spot.

  • Power Spots may move and are often located at small businesses or community points of interest, so check your Nearby Menu frequently.

2. Walk to Earn Max Particles

  • Walking 2 kilometers rewards you with 300 Max Particles. This can be repeated for additional rewards, with many players reporting that walking further (another 2 km) can net you additional Max Particles up to the daily cap.

  • Use Adventure Sync to ensure your steps are counted even when the app is running in the background.

3. Maximize Your Daily Collection

  • The typical daily cap is 800 Max Particles, but efficient routing can push this higher. For example, by interacting with four to six Power Spots and walking at least 4 kilometers, you can collect up to 1,020-1,080 Max Particles before the game enforces the cap.

  • Prioritize new Power Spots for first-time bonuses and combine walking with Power Spot visits for optimal gains.

4. Purchase Max Particles (Optional)

  • If you need more Max Particles, you can buy them from the in-game shop or the Pokémon GO Web Store.

5. Storage Limits

  • Remember, you can only hold 1,000 Max Particles at a time, so use them regularly for Max Battles or training Max Moves.

Summary Table: Efficient Max Particle Collection

Method Particles Earned Notes
Power Spot Visit 100 per visit +20 bonus for first daily visit
Walking 2 km 300 per 2 km Repeatable, up to daily cap
Max Daily Collection 800-1,080 Combine walking & Power Spots
Purchase (Shop/Web) Varies Optional, costs PokéCoins/real money
Storage Limit 1,000 Use before reaching cap

By combining Power Spot visits, regular walking, and using Adventure Sync, you can efficiently maximize your Max Particle collection each day for Max Battles and Dynamax Pokémon upgrades.

What’s the fastest way to reach 1,080 Max Particles daily in Pokémon Go

The fastest way to reach 1,080 Max Particles daily in Pokémon Go is to:

  • Interact with exactly four Power Spots (each gives 100 MP, plus a 20 MP bonus for your first daily interaction at each spot)

  • Walk at least 2 kilometers (earns 300 MP)

  • Then walk an additional 2 kilometers (earns another 300 MP)

By following this specific sequence-four Power Spot interactions and a total of 4 km walked-you can collect up to 1,080 Max Particles in a single day, surpassing the commonly assumed 800 MP daily cap. However, once you hit 1,080, the game will prevent you from collecting more until the daily reset.
