A stained-glass window, a rotating symbol, and one locked door stand between you and Ashley’s rescue. Here’s how to line up the colors and open the way through the church in Resident Evil 4 Remake.
Find the Blue Dial
The Blue Dial can be found inside the church on the right-hand side of the main altar. It’s mounted on a small pedestal near the stained glass window. Pick it up to complete the set with the Green and Red Dials. Once collected, return to the console and align all three colors so the symbols match the pattern in the window, revealing the path forward.
After defeating the El Gigante boss, you’ll finally be ready to head to the Church to find Ashley.

Check out the map above for the rest of the items on the ground floor of the Church, but the one we’re focused on is the blue dial key item in the back right corner. (Make sure you don’t miss the small key to the right of the Pulpit, too.)
Church puzzle solution – rotate stained glass
Rotate the colored glass pieces until their shapes align with the illuminated Los Illuminados symbol behind them. Focus on matching the patterns rather than the colors alone-the red, green, and blue sections must overlap perfectly to form the insignia. Once all fragments fit together and the image looks complete, confirm the arrangement to open the hidden door and progress further into the church.
Having three different sets of glass rotating independently is a little confusing, but there’s a simple trick to solving this puzzle – look for easily identifiable notches that match up with the insignia in the center of the puzzle. Think of it kind of like starting a jigsaw puzzle with the edges.

Place the Blue Dial in the Pulpit puzzle that opens.
- Rotate the green (center) dial first. Line up the point in middle of the insignia with the middle piece of green glass.
- Rotate the red (right) dial next. Line up the wing(?)tip in the upper left with the red glass.
- Rotate the blue (left) dial next. You’re mostly just filling in the gaps, but there are a couple points to help you get your bearings.
Where to find the Church Key before entering
In Resident Evil 4 Remake, the “Church Key” is actually called the Church Insignia. You obtain it in Chapter 3 from the Mural Cave south of the Lake area, after defeating Del Lago, solving shrine symbol puzzles for the Apostate’s Head and Blasphemer’s Head, and beating El Gigante.
Obtaining the Insignia
Head to the Mural Cave altar via the quarry path and Merchant’s dock. Place the Apostate’s Head (from Large Cave Shrine symbols) and Blasphemer’s Head (from Small Cave Shrine symbols) into the stone hands to release the Insignia from its mechanism.
Returning to Church
Use your boat to dock near the Merchant northwest of the Mural Cave, then trek west through the quarry road back to the church entrance. Interact with the divot at the main door to insert the Insignia and enter for Chapter 4.โโ
How to get Apostate’s Head location and puzzle solution
The Apostate’s Head is found in the Large Cave Shrine, located south of the Mural Cave altar in Chapter 4 of Resident Evil 4 Remake, accessible by boat after defeating Del Lago.
Location Details
After examining the altar in the Mural Cave (southwest lake area), sail your boat east/south to the Large Cave Shrine dock. Fight through Ganados outside a locked stone door with a circular symbol panel.
Puzzle Solution
Examine the cave interior and nearby walls for three yellow-highlighted symbols matching the panel’s eight options (symbols are consistent but perspective-dependent). Press these specific buttons on the pedestal:
-
Top-right
-
Top-left
-
Bottom-middle
The door unlocks; enter to grab the Apostate’s Head from the pedestal inside.
Return it (with Blasphemer’s Head) to the Mural Cave altar hands to release the Church Insignia.
