To that end, we’ve detailed where to find every hidden treasure in Super Mario RPG.

How to find hidden treasures easier in Super Mario RPG

To find hidden treasures more easily in Super Mario RPG, equip the Signal Ring, which you can obtain in the Mushroom Kingdom’s item shop basement by interacting with an NPC who reveals an invisible block when you jump. The Signal Ring notifies you with an on-screen alert whenever a hidden treasure is nearby, making it much simpler to locate them. Later in the game, you can acquire the Echo Signal Ring, which emits a tone that increases in frequency as you get closer to a hidden chest, further aiding your search. Remember to jump around suspicious spots in each area to reveal the invisible treasure chests and collect valuable items like Frog Coins and Croaka Colas.

Right away in the basement of the item shop in the Mushroom Kingdom, you’ll get the Signal Ring accessory, which doesn’t give you any stat boosts, but will ping you whenever a room you’re in contains an accessory. Later on in Nimbus Land, you’ll get an upgraded version of this accessory that will ping you as you get closer to wherever the hidden chest is.

The talking treasure chest that lives upstairs of the mayor’s house in Monstro Town will also tell you how many hidden treasures you have left to find, which is useful if you’re trying to find all of the hidden treasure chests in Super Mario RPG.

Mushroom Kingdom hidden treasure (Flower)

In the Mushroom Kingdom area of Super Mario RPG, several hidden Flower treasures can be found that permanently increase your FP (Flower Points). Notably, you can find a Flower inside a hidden chest by talking to an NPC in the basement of the item shop. Another Flower is accessible by jumping above the same NPC when they move to the right corner. Additionally, there is a Flower in the middle chest of the vault room before clearing Bandit’s Way, and a Flower Tab is rewarded after defeating Croco. These hidden treasures are well integrated into the exploration of Mushroom Kingdom, rewarding players who thoroughly search the area.

If you head downstairs from the item shop, a Toad will tell you to jump. Follow his instructions for what is technically the first hidden treasure. After doing this and getting the reward from the Toad, jump on his head and wait for him to walk into the corner to access another hidden treasure.

Mushroom Kingdom hidden treasure (Frog Coin)

In Super Mario RPG, the Mushroom Kingdom hides a valuable Frog Coin in a secret treasure chest located inside the castle’s entrance hall. To access this hidden treasure, players must first visit the Chancellor, exit the castle, and then reenter. Near the double doors, jumping on a nearby Toad and then onto the ledge above reveals the chest containing the Frog Coin. This chest is no longer missable in the remake, making it an essential find for collecting Frog Coins early in the game.

Jump on the Toad’s head in the castle entryway to get access to this ledge, where you can jump and hit this hidden treasure.

Note that you’ll need to wait for the ruckus at the castle to die down. After you meet Mallow and are about to head out, you can head back into the castle to use this Toad to get on the ledge.

Bandit’s Way hidden treasure (Croaka Cola)

In Bandit’s Way, there is a single hidden treasure chest containing the valuable Croaka Cola. To find it, head to the second area of Bandit’s Way and locate a red spinning flower with a purple flower to its right. Stand on the red flower, face the purple flower, and jump slightly to the right to reveal the hidden chest. Croaka Cola is a powerful item that fully restores the HP and FP of all party members, making it especially useful for tough battles. This hidden treasure is present in both the original SNES version and the 2023 remake of Super Mario RPG, where it is known as Kerokero Cola in the original game.

Use the red flower by the right exit of Bandit’s Way to jump towards the top right, allowing you to hit this very high chest.

Rose Town hidden treasure (Frog Coin)

In Rose Town, players can find two hidden Frog Coins by exploring carefully. The first Frog Coin is hidden in the Item Shop, where you must jump onto the top shelf behind the shopkeeper to reveal the hidden treasure chest. The second Frog Coin is located in a house on the northern cliff of Rose Town; to reach it, jump on a nearby Toad’s head to access the house, then go upstairs and jump on the bed to uncover the chest. These Frog Coins are valuable collectibles used to purchase special items in the game.

Head into the item shop and jump up these shelves behind the cashiers to access this chest.

Rose Town hidden treasure (Frog Coin)

There’s a house in Rose Town on the cliff that’s out of reach, but you can reach it by jumping on a nearby Toad’s head and then onto the cliff. Go upstairs in this house and jump on the bed to get this hidden chest. (Also hit that switch in the room to open up the stairs to the house.)

Forest Maze hidden treasure (Croaka Cola)

In the Forest Maze area of Super Mario RPG, one of the hidden treasures you can find is a Croaka Cola. As soon as you enter the Forest Maze, head to the far upper left corner of the small clearing near the entrance and jump up to reveal a hidden treasure chest containing the Croaka Cola item. This refreshing item is useful for restoring HP during your adventure. This chest is one of six hidden treasures scattered throughout the Forest Maze, rewarding players who explore carefully and jump at the right spots.

At the entrance to the Forest Maze, jump to the left of the path for this chest.

Forest Maze hidden treasure (Frog Coin)

In the Forest Maze area of Super Mario RPG, players can find a hidden treasure chest containing a Frog Coin shortly after emerging from the first underground tunnel inside a hollow tree trunk. To locate this treasure, head to the top left corner of the clearing near the stump you exit and jump to reveal the chest. This Frog Coin is one of several hidden treasures scattered throughout the Forest Maze, rewarding exploration and careful jumping. Additionally, Frog Coins can be farmed in this area by repeatedly jumping on Wigglers without missing, providing a reliable way to collect this special currency early in the game.

After the underground portion, jump in the spot shown above to get this chest.

Forest Maze hidden treasure (Flower)

In the Forest Maze area of Super Mario RPG, players can find a hidden treasure containing a Flower by entering one of the hollow stumps in the large forest clearing. Specifically, take the closest stump on the top row to appear in a small cave with Buzzers and Amanitas. Head to the lower left section of this cave and jump slightly to the right of the center of the square-like corner to uncover the hidden chest holding a Flower, which permanently increases your FP (Flower Points).

In the area with the seven stumps and wigglers, head into the stump closest to the entrance (the right stump). Inside, take out the enemies and jump at the above location to find the hidden treasure.

Forest Maze hidden treasure (Croaka Cola)

In the area with the seven stumps and wigglers, go into the stump the farthest from the entrance to the area (it’s the one that isn’t in a pair). Head to the back and jump right behind the sleeping wiggler to find this chest.

Forest Maze hidden treasure (nothing)

In the Forest Maze area of Super Mario RPG, there are six hidden treasure chests to find, each containing valuable items like Croaka Cola, Frog Coins, Flowers, and Red Essence. However, one particular hidden treasure chest is unique because it is completely empty yet still counts as a collectible. This empty chest is located in the stump on the left in the second row of the maze, where you must jump upwards facing left to reveal it. Despite containing nothing, it adds a quirky twist to the treasure hunt in the Forest Maze.

In the same room as above, if you take the left stump in the second row from the entrance, you can hit the chest in the location shown above, but you won’t get anything for it. Boo hiss.

Forest Maze hidden treasure (Red Essence)

In the Forest Maze area of Super Mario RPG, a hidden treasure chest containing a Red Essence can be found just before the boss arena after following Geno through the Lost Woods Maze. From the save point, head south to a small alcove near the bottom corner of the area and jump to reveal the chest. This Red Essence item grants invincibility for three turns and removes all status ailments from the user, making it a valuable support item for tough battles in the game.

In the final room with the save block (after the maze you follow Geno through), jump in the bottom left corner by the entrance to get this chest.

Pipe Vault hidden treasure (Frog Coin)

In Super Mario RPG, the Pipe Vault houses a unique Frog Coin hidden in a narrow corridor that Mario cannot normally pass through. To obtain this Frog Coin, players must perform a special duck and slide maneuver: approach the gap by running with the control stick up and to the right, then just before reaching the gap, quickly tilt the control stick down and to the right. This causes Mario to slide under the gap, allowing him to collect the Frog Coin. This clever mechanic is a nod to Mario’s classic 2D games and is the only time in the game this move is required to get a Frog Coin.

In the room with the row of Piranha Plants, enter the second pipe. Jump right in front of the elevated platform to reveal an invisible block you can use to get on top of the platform. Run forward a bit and jump to reveal this treasure.

Between the chest above and the already visible chest in this room, there’s a second hidden treasure. (We got them out of order in this room, sorry if the images are confusing.)

Yo’ster Isle hidden treasure (Frog Coin)

From the Save Block, move to the bushes northwest of it and jump at the corner to reveal the hidden chest. This Frog Coin is a useful collectible currency in Super Mario RPG, often used in special shops for unique items. The chest’s location encourages exploration around the Save Point area and adds an extra incentive to engage with the Yoshi-themed activities on the isle, such as the Yoshi races and feeding the Little Yoshi to turn it into Fat Yoshi for rewards.

The hidden treasure is behind the save block.

Booster Pass hidden treasure (Flower)

Upon entering the first area of Booster Pass in Super Mario RPG, players can find a hidden Flower treasure by jumping north to reach the highest ground near the entrance. By getting on top of the cactus there and jumping again, the hidden chest containing the Flower will be revealed. This Flower is a valuable collectible that boosts FP, making it a useful item for battles.

Right before the northern exit of the first area, jump in the corner to reveal this hidden treasure.

Booster Tower hidden treasure (Frog Coin)

In Booster Tower, you can find four hidden treasure chests, most of which contain Frog Coins. One Frog Coin is in the stairway room past the main lobby; go to the north corner, take one step left onto the first dark tile, and jump. Another Frog Coin can be found after using the seesaw with a Thwomp; move to the left side of the bottom walkway to jump and reveal the hidden treasure. In the room with the save point, you can get a Mushroom. Jump on the yellow platforms and then jump again to get a Goodie Bag.

In the stairs room with the never-ending line of Sniffits, jump in the above spot at the top of the stairs to get your hidden treasure.

This item can be activated in battle to earn coins, making it a valuable find during your climb through Booster Tower in Super Mario RPG.

In the room with the platforms and the save block, carefully jump atop the visible treasure chest, and jump again to get this chest.

Booster Tower hidden treasure (Mushroom)

In Booster Tower, a hidden treasure chest containing a Mushroom can be found in the room with the save point before Booster’s chamber. To access it, you must activate a hidden J Block on a bright spot in the room, then jump onto the Mario doppelganger to reach and open the chest. This Croaka Cola is especially useful for tough battles and is one of the key treasures in the Sunken Ship area.

To get this very tricky chest, you’ll need to jump on the head of the Mario clone in front of you so you can reach the hidden treasure. Do not talk to the Mario, as this will initiate a battle. If you talk to and defeat the Mario, you’ll have to leave the Sunken Ship area and come back for it to respawn.

Land’s End hidden treasure (Red Essence)

In the Land’s End area of Super Mario RPG, one of the six hidden treasure chests contains a Red Essence. To find it, enter the first section of Land’s End and use the cannon to launch Mario onto a floating yellow platform with eyes. When the platform reaches its highest point, jump off the north corner to reveal the hidden chest with the Red Essence inside. This item grants the user invincibility from attacks for three turns during battle and removes all status ailments, making it a valuable support item for tough fights.

Use the cannon at the entrance to Land’s End to shoot yourself onto the yellow platform. Jump towards north from the platform to hit this chest.

Land’s End hidden treasure (Croaka Cola)

Shoot yourself onto the yellow platform and jump north from it to reveal yet another yellow platform. Shoot yourself from the cannon on to the second yellow platform to gain access to the cliff where the hidden treasure is on the west side.

Where are the most elusive hidden treasures in Super Mario RPG’s secret locations

The most elusive hidden treasures in Super Mario RPG are scattered across several secret locations that require precise jumping and exploration. Notably:

  • Rose Town: A hidden chest inside the far north house can be accessed by jumping on a Toad’s head to reach the roof, then entering the house and jumping on the bed in the second-floor bedroom.

  • Forest Maze: This area contains six hidden treasures, including some in tricky spots like underground stumps and a chest that is completely empty yet counts as a collectible.

  • Booster Tower: Several hidden chests are found in this multi-level area, often requiring jumps on platforms and timing with enemies like Snifits and Thwomps to reach them.

  • Nimbus Land: Most hidden treasures here are inside the palace, making them harder to find without thorough exploration.

  • Monstro Town and Bean Valley: These regions have fewer but well-hidden chests, such as one behind a bush in Monstro Town and three in Bean Valley accessible through pipes and careful jumping.

  • Bandit Way: A hidden chest located on a platform above the main path, reachable by using red flowers and yellow platforms to jump to the right spot.

These locations are notoriously missed because the chests are invisible or placed in hard-to-reach spots, often requiring jumping on NPCs or environmental objects to access them.

Which secret locations in Super Mario RPG are hardest to access for hidden treasures

The hardest secret locations to access for hidden treasures in Super Mario RPG are primarily found in areas that require precise jumping on NPCs, platforms, or environmental objects, often involving tricky timing and exploration:

  • Rose Town: The house on a cliff is notoriously difficult to reach. Players must jump on a Toad’s head to climb up to the house, then jump on the bed in the second-floor bedroom to reveal the hidden chest.

  • Forest Maze: This area contains multiple hidden treasures, some inside underground stumps and narrow tunnels, requiring careful navigation and jumps in tight spaces. One chest is notably empty but still counts as a collectible, adding to the challenge.

  • Booster Tower: Hidden chests here demand skillful use of platforms, timing jumps with enemy movements like Snifits and Thwomps, and using seesaws to launch to otherwise unreachable spots.

  • Bandit Way: Accessing the single hidden chest involves using red flowers and yellow platforms to reach a high platform above the main path, requiring precise platforming.

  • Pipe Vault: While simpler than others, reaching the two hidden chests involves navigating lava platforms and spawning yellow platforms by jumping at the edge, which can be tricky for some players.

  • Nimbus Land and Bowser’s Keep: These late-game areas contain some of the final hidden treasures, often inside palaces or difficult-to-reach spots, making them among the hardest to find.

These locations are considered the most challenging due to their combination of invisibility, platforming difficulty, and the need to interact with NPCs or environmental elements in unconventional ways.
