A new Community Day brings Chespin into the spotlight, offering rare bonuses, boosted spawns, and a chance to catch its shiny form. Here’s what trainers should know to make the most of this limited-time event.
How do I catch a shiny Chespin?
Shiny Chespin appears at a 1/25 rate during Community Day hours. Spin nearby PokéStops for more encounters and use Incense or a Lure Module to boost spawns around you. Activate Adventure Sync for remote rewards if you’re unable to play actively. Trade with friends who attended the event to improve shiny odds through Lucky Trades. Check the in-game news for exact timings and any bonus shiny rate boosts.
According to research conducted by Pokémon community site The Silph Road, Shiny rates on Community Days are about 1 in 24, which means that if you keep playing throughout the three-hour window, you should find quite a few shiny Pokémon.

If you’re short on time or Poké Balls, you can pop an Incense, then quickly tap each Chespin to check for shiny ones, running from any that aren’t shiny. Notably, any Chespin you’ve already tapped will face where your player is standing, so that should help identify which ones you may have already checked.
What Community Day move does Chespin’s evolution learn?
Evolving Quilladin into Chesnaught during the Chespin Community Day event or up to five hours afterward grants Frenzy Plant as its exclusive Charged Attack.
If you evolve Quilladin into Chesnaught from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. in your local time, it will learn the charged move Frenzy Plant.
If you miss out on evolving it during this period, you will likely be able to evolve it during a Community Day weekend event in December to get Frenzy Plant. If you don’t want to wait, you can use an Elite TM to get the move.
How does Chesnaught do in the meta?
Chesnaught holds a niche role in the Pokémon Go meta, performing best in limited PvP cups and certain Great League matchups. Its unique Grass and Fighting typing gives it solid coverage against Water, Rock, and Ground types, though it struggles with Flying, Fairy, and Psychic opponents. With Frenzy Plant from Community Day, Chesnaught’s offensive threat increases, allowing it to pressure shields and secure wins it previously couldn’t. While it isn’t a dominant pick across all leagues, it remains a viable option for players seeking variety and strength in specific formats.
Chesnaught is a great PvE raid attacker. While it’s behind picks like Roserade and most legendary Pokémon, it’ll be worth grabbing a strong one for raids. Set it up with Vine Whip and Frenzy Plant for success.
Chesnaught does pretty good in PvP and the addition of Frenzy Plant means it can take down more targets that would cause trouble across the various leagues. Set it up with Vine Whip and Frenzy Plant with Superpower to do some serious damage.
How do I make the most of Chespin Community Day?
Focus on catching as many Chespin as possible during the event to collect enough Candy and XL Candy for evolution and powering up. Use Pinap Berries to double your Candy gains and trade with friends to aim for high IV or lucky Chespin. Don’t forget to evolve a Quilladin during the event window to get the special move Frenzy Plant. Take advantage of the bonus Stardust, Incense, and Lure Module durations, and check for Shiny Chespin while playing in areas with many PokéStops.
The following bonuses will be active during Chespin Community Day:
- 1⁄4 hatch distance for eggs placed into Incubators during the event
- Doubled candy for catching Pokémon
- Doubled chance for level 31 trainers to get XL candy from catching Pokémon
- Incense lasts three hours
- Lure Modules lasts three hours
- Chespin special photobombs when taking snapshots
- One additional special trade
- Stardust cost halved for trading
That said, you should Incubate your eggs and use an Incense and try to nab some powerful Chespin.
If you can Mega Evolve Venusaur, Sceptile, or Abomasnow, you’ll score additional Chespin Candy per catch.
In addition to all this, Niantic is still running special four-star raids from 5-10 p.m., where if you clear the Quilladin raid, Chespin will spawn in a 300-meter radius around the gym for 30 minutes. These raids cannot be done remotely. If the usual 2-5 p.m. increase in spawns doesn’t get you the Chespin you wanted, you can try raiding for another chance.
Is Frenzy Plant Chesnaught good in PvP or raids
Frenzy Plant Chesnaught offers solid utility in PvP across leagues but ranks lower as a raid attacker, where it’s outclassed by top Grass options.
PvP Performance
Frenzy Plant boosts Chesnaught’s Grass damage output (2.22 DPE, strongest among starter exclusives), pairing well with Vine Whip and Superpower for coverage against Steel, Water, Rock, Dark, and Normal types.
It shines in Ultra League, resisting threats like Registeel and G-Fisk while bulkier than Venusaur; Great League suits limited cups, and Master League sees niche use.
Proper timing-Frenzy Plant for Grass-weak foes, Superpower for baiting-is key, though Flying and Psychic weaknesses limit it.
Raid Viability
Chesnaught ranks #6 among non-Shadow, non-Mega Grass attackers (behind Kartana, Zarude, etc.), viable for Kyogre/Groudon due to bulk but 10%+ weaker than L30 Kartana or Roserade.
Frenzy Plant improves DPS, but lack of Mega evolution and better alternatives like Tapu Bulu make it budget-only for new players.
Best for free teams via Community Day, not heavy investment.
Best moveset for Chesnaught in Great League PvP
Vine Whip, Frenzy Plant, and Superpower form the consensus best moveset for Chesnaught in Great League PvP.
Why This Moveset Excels
Vine Whip generates strong energy (4 EPT) with STAB Grass damage, outperforming Low Kick or Smack Down for faster charged move access.
Frenzy Plant delivers high Grass burst damage (100 power) against Water, Rock, and Ground foes, enhanced by Community Day legacy status.
Superpower provides Fighting coverage (coverage against Steel, Normal, Dark) and bait potential, despite its stat drops.
PvP Rankings and Role
PvPoke ranks Chesnaught mid-tier (~#170 overall) in Great League at optimal IVs like 1/15/15 (level ~19), fitting as a bulky Grass-Fighting pivot resisting Steel/Water while farming common meta like Swampert or Registeel.
It shines in limited cups but faces checks from Flying, Psychic, and Fairy types; pair with safe switches like Clodsire.
Alternatives
-
Energy Ball over Frenzy Plant for non-legacy spam (weaker DPS).
-
Gyro Ball for niche Steel coverage, but Superpower edges it out.
