Clair Obscur Expedition 33: Character Skill Respec Guide Walkthrough

Guides

Changing your build in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 can transform a losing fight into a flawless victory-but the respec system isn’t as straightforward as it seems. Here’s how to reset your skills, experiment with new Recoats, and shape your character for the toughest encounters ahead.

How to respec in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

How to respec in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you can reallocate a character’s attributes and skills by obtaining a Recoat and using it to reset the progression, allowing you to adjust builds as you explore and encounter new challenges.

As you level your characters in Clair Obscur, you get to assign skill points and attribute points. If you’d like to change the skill point allocation later on, you must respec (reset) those points.

To respec skills, you need a Recoat item. We’ll explain Recoats and how to get them in more detail below, but for now, it’s very important to know the Recoat’s limitations before you spend any. Keep the following rules in mind:

  • A Recoat will only reset a character’s attribute points or skill points, not both! So, if you wish to reallocate all points, you must spend two Recoats.
  • A Recoat only resets points for a single character. If you’d like to reset Maelle’s and Gustav’s skill points, for example, you need two Recoats.

Provided you have a Recoat, here’s how to use it:

  • Find any Expedition Flag on the map. You can recognize them by the golden sparkles. Besides skill point allocation, an Expedition Flag functions as an HP recovery and fast travel spot.
  • Select the character you want to respec.
  • Click either the “upgrade attributes” or “learn skills” button, depending on whether you want to respec their attribute points or respec their skill points.
  • If you want to respec attribute points: Click “reset attributes” at the bottom of the page.
  • If you want to respec skill points: Click “consume to reset tree” at the top of the page.

To unlock respec in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you just need to find the first Expedition Flag in the game (Meadows Corridor) and allocate some skill or attribute points. Once that’s done, you can use the respec button. It’s highly recommended to save your Recoats for later, though, when you’ve gained more points and more experience.

How to get more Recoats in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Recoats serve to reset skill or attribute points for characters in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, one type per item at Expedition Flags marked by golden sparkles. Players obtain them by defeating specific enemies like Petanks and Cruler-Bruler groups in areas such as Coastal Cave, Flying Manor, Floating Cemetery, Spring Meadows, Gestral Village, Stone Wave Cliffs, and The Reacher. Additional sources include glowing pickups on podiums or the ground in locations like Flying Waters and Forgotten Battlefield, plus purchases from Gestral merchants at 10,000 Chroma each or occasional boss drops.โ€‹โ€‹

There are various ways to earn Recoats in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The most straightforward way is to defeat enemies and obtain Recoats as random enemy drops. Although Recoats seem exceedingly scarce in early game, they’ll become much more common after a few hours of playtime. The Ice Golem in Act 3, for example, is known to drop many Recoats. If you find another enemy that drops Recoats, you can farm them by resetting the area at the nearest Expedition Flag and defeating them again.

Other ways to obtain Recoats in Clair Obscur are to buy them from Gestral Merchants or find them as loot. As a new player, you can obtain your first Recoat during the prologue. All you need to do is speak with Nicolas, the painter with the red coat and top hat, and agree to duel him. He’ll reward you with a Recoat regardless of whether you win or lose.

Another relatively easy Recoat location for new players is near Noco’s Hut in Flying Waters. Starting from the teleport waypoint, take the narrow path behind you and walk slightly to the left, past the object that looks like a massive arrow point. From there, turn slightly right and walk toward the large round tunnel. Before the entrance, on a flat stone on the left, there’s a Recoat ready to get picked up.

Where to farm Recoat early game locations

Recoats are rare drops from enemies and fixed pickups in early-game areas of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, with farming relying on repeatable enemy fights near Expedition Flags.โ€‹

Early Pickups

Grab guaranteed Recoats in Act 1 from Nicolas in Lumiere (prologue duel), on the ground in Flying Waters past Maelle’s weapon area, on steps near the Gestral Gambler in Gestral Village, and in Stone Wave Cliffs’ Gold Chevaliere arena down the rope.โ€‹

Farming Spots

Farm random drops from weak enemies like construct mobs near the first flag in Act 1 (M Corridor/Flying Waters) or around Gestral Village world map-reset via Expedition Flags for repeats, though drops are low-rate (patience needed). Also check Petanks in Esquie’s Nest or Stone Wave Cliffs for one-time drops.โ€‹

Merchant Option

Buy from Jujubree or Eesda in Gestral Village (after shakedown duel) for 10,000 Chroma each once you reach there early in Act 1.โ€‹

Best early-game enemies to farm Recoats efficiently

Early-game Recoat farming in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 focuses on weak, respawning enemies near Expedition Flags in Act 1 for repeatable drops, despite low rates requiring patience.โ€‹โ€‹

Top Enemy Spots

Target construct mobs or single enemies right outside Expedition 1’s flag in Flying Waters (M Corridor area)-run back from the flag to reset after each fight for quick clears. Also farm groups of basic enemies on the world map near Gestral Village, as they drop Recoats slightly more often with first-strike setups.โ€‹โ€‹

Efficiency Tips

Use parry-heavy builds for speed, as these foes have simple attacks; expect 1 Recoat every 10-20 runs, but combine with pickups for steady supply. Avoid bosses for farming due to non-repeatable nature early on.โ€‹โ€‹
