In this Destiny 2 guide, we’ll list out all the rewards for the Past is Prologue event and explain the best items to buy with Bento Tokens.

All Bento Token rewards in Destiny 2

Bento Tokens in Destiny 2 are a limited-time currency earned by completing specific Bento Box quests from the Drifter during the Past is Prologue event. Players can collect up to eight tokens total, which can be exchanged with Eris Morn on the Moon for a variety of valuable rewards. These include powerful Adept weapons like the Cataphract GL3 Strand Heavy Grenade Launcher, Igneous Hammer Solar Hand Cannon, and Horror’s Least Arc Pulse Rifle; essential upgrade materials such as Ascendant Alloys, Ascendant Shards, Exotic Ciphers, and Spoils of Conquest; various mementos from activities like Gambit and Nightfall; as well as Artifice armor pieces and the exotic Cloudstrike sniper rifle. Given the token cap, prioritizing Adept weapons and key materials is recommended to maximize benefits before the event ends.

To get Bento Tokens, you’ll need to complete the special Bento Box quests from the Drifter in the Tower – which is also how you get the all-white Chatterwhite shader. Once you’ve got some tokens, you can take them to Eris on the Moon and exchange them for the items below.

Each item only costs one Bento Token unless stated otherwise:

  • 2x Ascendant Alloy
  • 2x Ascendant Shard
  • Exotic Cipher
  • 25x Spoils of Conquest
  • Gambit Memento
  • Nightfall Memento
  • Iron Banner Memento
  • Lost Memento
  • Dawning Memento
  • Games Memento
  • Solstice Memento
  • Cataphract GL3 (Adept) Strand heavy grenade launcher
  • Igneous Hammer (Adept) Solar hand cannon
  • Riptide Stasis fusion rifle
  • Horror’s Least (Adept) Arc pulse rifle
  • [2 Bento Tokens] Bone Artifice armor set – helmet
  • [2 Bento Tokens] Bone Artifice armor set – gloves
  • [2 Bento Tokens] Bone Artifice armor set – chest
  • [2 Bento Tokens] Bone Artifice armor set – legs
  • [2 Bento Tokens] Bone Artifice armor set – class item
  • [3 Bento Tokens] Cloudstrike Exotic sniper rifle

Which rewards should you purchase with your Bento Tokens in Destiny 2?

When deciding which rewards to purchase with your limited Bento Tokens in Destiny 2, prioritize Adept weapons such as the Cataphract GL3 Strand Heavy Grenade Launcher, Igneous Hammer Solar Hand Cannon, and Horror’s Least Pulse Rifle, as these offer powerful perks and versatility for both PvE and PvP activities. The Cataphract GL3 is especially recommended for its boss DPS potential. Next, consider acquiring Spoils of Conquest and Exotic Ciphers, which are valuable for endgame gear and exotic upgrades. Avoid spending tokens on Artifice armor pieces, as their rolls are underwhelming and they cost two tokens each, making them a poor investment compared to other rewards. If you lack an Artifice class item, consider purchasing that as a useful exception. Overall, focusing on weapons and key currencies will maximize the value of your Bento Tokens before the event ends.

Many of these items are very good and worth grinding Bento Tokens for. However, because you can only earn eight tokens during the event, we’re going to be picky. Here’s a glance at our primary recommendations, followed by detailed explanations for said recommendations:

  • Cloudstrike Exotic sniper rifle
  • Cataphract GL3 (Adept)
  • Exotic Cipher
  • 25x Spoils of Conquest
  • Mementos that you like the look of

First let’s start with something we recommend you stay away from: armor. The Artifice armor sounds tempting, as Artifice usually only drops from Master level dungeons and can give you a few bonus stats. However, these armor rolls aren’t too great, they cost two Bento Tokens – which is very steep – and you can’t even buy the full set. More importantly, however, is that Bungie will be reworking armor in the game’s next expansion later this year, so it’s best to avoid investing too heavily into armor until we know exactly what that will look like.

The only exception to the “do not buy the armor” rule is if you don’t have an Artifice class item at all. Because class items don’t have stats (yet), that’s a worthwhile purchase, as it’ll just give you three bonus stats in any build until the next expansion.

Next, let’s talk about the weapon category, which includes some items everyone should buy. If you’re a new player who doesn’t have the Cloudstrike Exotic, that should probably be the first thing you purchase. It’s a very good PvP sniper rifle, but it’s also been used to deal some massive damage to bosses in PvE – under the right circumstances. It’s 3 Bento Tokens, which is very expensive, but grinding for the weapon in Empire Hunts on Europa (the only other way to get it) is agony. Trust us, this is a much less painful way to get this Exotic.

As for the Legendary weapons, Cataphract GL3 (Adept) is incredible and usually locked behind Trials of Osiris, the pinnacle PvP game mode. It’s one of the best PvE grenade launchers in the game and could be extremely useful for all levels of players, offering the potent perk combo of Envious Assassin and Bait and Switch. The other weapons are fine if you’re a collector or a PvP main, especially the Adept Horror’s Least.

Once you’ve gotten the above items, the rest of the conversation gets a little more complex. The resources can be really good for both new players and veterans, and we’d recommend you pay specific attention to the Exotic Cipher, which is a notoriously obnoxious resource to grind for. The Spoils of Conquest are great if you never want to engage with raiding at all, but there are ways to get them in small parties or solo, so these are more convenient than anything.

If you’ve purchased everything else above, or don’t need any of it, then you should turn your attention to the mementos, which you can add to your enhanced or crafted guns for a cool, custom shader. These are all personal preference and you can check what shader you’ll get from them by searching through an eligible weapon’s potential shader list.

Which Bento Token items offer the best value for PvP and PvE

For both PvP and PvE in Destiny 2, the best value items to buy with Bento Tokens are primarily the Adept weapons and the Cloudstrike Exotic sniper rifle.

PvP Recommendations:

  • Igneous Hammer (Adept Solar Hand Cannon): Highly regarded as a god roll for PvP, this weapon offers strong performance and can be enhanced, making it a top pick for competitive modes like Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris.

  • Horror’s Least (Adept Arc Pulse Rifle): With solid perks like Perpetual Motion and Kill Clip, it is a reliable choice for PvP engagements, though there are other strong pulse rifles available.

PvE Recommendations:

  • Cloudstrike Exotic Sniper Rifle: Although it costs 3 Bento Tokens, it is excellent for both PvP and PvE, dealing substantial damage to bosses and offering great utility in raids and strikes. It is especially valuable as an alternative to grinding difficult Empire Hunts for this Exotic.

  • Cataphract GL3 (Adept Strand Heavy Grenade Launcher): A top-tier heavy weapon for PvE, particularly effective for boss DPS with perks like Envious Assassin and Bait and Switch. It is recommended if you lack a strong Strand heavy weapon.

Additional Notes:

  • Avoid spending Bento Tokens on Artifice armor due to poor stat rolls and impending armor system changes.

  • Exotic Ciphers and Spoils of Conquest are useful for new or returning players but less impactful than the key weapons.

In summary, prioritize the Cloudstrike Exotic for its versatility, the Cataphract GL3 for PvE heavy DPS, and the Igneous Hammer for PvP dominance to maximize your Bento Token investment.

Which Bento items provide the best balance for both PvP and PvE gameplay

The Bento Token items that provide the best balance for both PvP and PvE gameplay in Destiny 2 are the Adept Igneous Hammer and the Adept Cataphract GL3 grenade launcher.

  • Adept Igneous Hammer (Solar Hand Cannon): This weapon boasts the best stat package among 120 RPM hand cannons and is highly valued in PvP, especially in Trials of Osiris, while still being effective in PvE scenarios. Its versatile perks like Kill Clip and Frenzy make it a solid choice across activities.

  • Adept Cataphract GL3 (Strand Heavy Grenade Launcher): Though more PvE-focused, this grenade launcher is excellent for boss damage phases and general PvE content, and it can hold its own in PvP thanks to perks like Envious Assassin and Bait and Switch. It offers good utility and damage output without being overly specialized.

While the Cloudstrike Exotic sniper rifle is a strong PvE and PvP weapon, its higher token cost (3 tokens) and requirement of owning Beyond Light make it less balanced for all players compared to the Adept weapons.

In summary, for a well-rounded investment of Bento Tokens that supports both PvP and PvE, prioritize the Adept Igneous Hammer and Adept Cataphract GL3, as they offer strong performance and versatility across game modes.
