Destiny 2 Mission Captis Walkthrough Guide and Rune Solutions for Heresy

Guides

Step into the shadowy depths of Destiny 2’s latest challenge with “Mission Captis,” the climactic finale of Act 2 in the Heresy episode. This mission blends intense combat with a mind-bending puzzle where Guardians must protect Eris Morn’s ritual by targeting the elusive Eyes of Vengeance amidst waves of Taken foes. Whether you’re on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox, mastering the binding ritual is key to sealing a powerful paracausal entity and advancing the story’s dark saga.

In this Destiny 2 guide, we’ll walk you through how to launch the “Mission Captis” mission and how to “complete the binding” to finish Eris’ ritual.

How to start ’Mission Captis’ in Destiny 2

To start “Mission Captis” in Destiny 2, head to The Last City on the Director map and look near Eris Morn’s apartment, where other Heresy activities are located. A new mission node will appear on the far right side of this area. Select this node and then hit launch to begin “Mission Captis,” which is the final main storyline mission for Act 2 of the Heresy episode.

“Mission Captis” comprises the 15th and 16th step (of 18 total) in the “Act 2: Rites of the Deep” quest for episode Heresy. You’ll run into it eventually as you complete the previous week’s stories, or it’ll simply appear in your inventory if you’ve already caught up on the previous week.

To launch the mission, head to The Last City on the Director and look down by Eris’ apartment (Variisis Core), where the rest of the Heresy activities live. You’ll see a new node on the far right side of this area. Click it and then hit launch to start “Mission Captis.”

How to complete the binding in ’Mission Captis’

To complete the binding in “Mission Captis” in Destiny 2, start by standing on the central Hive plate in the Hall of Souls to initiate the ritual. You will face waves of Taken enemies summoned by the Resonant Knife, which you must defeat using weapons that avoid area damage effects to prevent complications. When a wall of Taken Acolyte Eyes appears along with a Hive symbol above the portal, your task is to replicate this symbol by destroying only the Eyes of Vengeance that shoot at you, while leaving the other Acolyte Eyes intact. Destroying the wrong eyes causes them to respawn. After successfully targeting these eyes, defeat the next wave of enemies and solve two more similar rune puzzles by shooting the correct Eyes of Vengeance in sequence. Completing these puzzles completes the binding ritual and concludes the mission.

The mission will drop you off in the Hall of Souls to start, and will mark the big portal as your destination. Head over there to trigger Eris, who will appear at the top of the stairs. After a brief chat, she’ll ask you to stand on the plate in the middle of the room. Do it to trigger the fight.

The Resonant Knife, First of the Reshaped (the season’s big bad) will appear where Eris was and attempt to disrupt her ritual. Kill the Taken they summon, but avoid putting down any long-lasting area damage effects to save you some headache later. We also recommend using a weapon that has zero area effects – stay away from explosive payload, unraveling rounds, that sort of thing.

Eventually, you’ll get a notification that says “The Resonant Knife attempts to disrupt the ritual!” This is your signifier that the main puzzle in this mission has begun. Stay in the arena, but back up to get some cover. You’ll see a giant wall of Taken Acolyte’s Eyes, and a Hive symbol over the portal. The idea here is that you want to make the symbol above the portal by destroying some of the Taken eyes and leaving others.

This might sound like you need a degree in Destiny with a minor in Hive literature to put it all together, but there are two very simple tells that can help you solve this puzzle – as well as the two additional puzzles that come after:

  • The eyes you need to shoot will shoot at you and your Fireteam.
  • The eyes you need to shoot have a specific name: Eye of Vengeance.

If you don’t see an eye shoot at you or you notice that it’s called an Acolyte’s Eye instead of an Eye of Vengeance, do not shoot at it. If you destroy an incorrect eye, all other eyes will respawn.

After you’ve shot all the correct eyes, another wave of Taken enemies will appear. Kill them and then prepare for another puzzle, this time on the left side of the arena. Shoot the three Eyes of Vengeance, take out some more Taken, and complete the third rune puzzle on the right side of the room to complete the ritual and the mission.

What are the key steps to successfully complete ’Mission Captis’ in Destiny 2

Key Steps to Successfully Complete “Mission Captis” in Destiny 2

  1. Start the Mission
Launch “Mission Captis” from the Director in The Last City once you have progressed through Act 2 of the Heresy episode.

  2. Activate the Ritual
Upon arrival at the Hall of Souls, approach the portal and stand on the central Hive plate to begin the binding ritual with Eris Morn.

  3. Defeat Taken Adds
The Resonant Knife (Subjugator) will spawn and summon waves of Taken enemies. Eliminate these adds using weapons that avoid long-lasting area damage effects, as such effects can cause issues later.

  4. Complete the Eye Puzzle (“Complete the Binding”)

    • A wall of Taken Acolyte’s Eyes will appear. Your goal is to recreate the Hive rune symbol shown above the portal by selectively destroying specific Eyes of Vengeance.

    • Identify the Eyes of Vengeance by their name and the fact they shoot at you; only destroy these. Destroying the wrong eyes causes all eyes to respawn.

    • This puzzle occurs in three phases, each requiring you to shoot the correct Eyes of Vengeance to form the rune pattern.

  5. Defeat Additional Taken Waves
After each phase of the eye puzzle, defeat the newly spawned Taken enemies to progress.

  6. Solve All Three Rune Puzzles
The three rune puzzles correspond to different Hive symbols:

    • The first resembles a lower-case “n” with ellipses on top.

    • The second is a “V” shape (sometimes called “pizza”).

    • The third is a circle.
Shoot the Eyes of Vengeance to match these symbols exactly.

  7. Complete the Mission
After completing all three puzzles and defeating the final wave of enemies, the ritual concludes. You will then have a brief dialogue with NPCs to wrap up Act 2.

Following these steps carefully ensures success in “Mission Captis,” allowing you to advance the Heresy story in Destiny 2.

What is the significance of targeting the Eye of Vengeance in Mission Captis

The significance of targeting the Eye of Vengeance in “Mission Captis” lies in its role as the key to completing the binding ritual puzzle. These Eyes of Vengeance are distinct from the other Acolyte’s Eyes because they actively shoot at you and your Fireteam and are specifically named “Eye of Vengeance.” To successfully recreate the Hive rune symbol displayed above the portal, you must destroy only these Eyes of Vengeance while leaving the other eyes intact. Destroying the wrong eyes causes all eyes to respawn, forcing you to start the puzzle over. Thus, targeting the Eyes of Vengeance is essential to progressing through the mission’s ritual phases and ultimately completing the mission.
