Guides

Accumulating Allagan Tomestones of Poetics in Final Fantasy XIV is inevitable for any adventurer, but knowing exactly where to spend them can transform your gameplay from good to great. Whether you’re gearing up for the next expansion, chasing relic weapon materials, or hunting for rare crafting items, this guide reveals the smartest investments to make with your Poetics-so you never let them go to waste again. Dive in to discover how to maximize your rewards and power up your journey in Eorzea.

Keep in mind that you are not going to make millions of gil in profit from Poetics. Every player above level 50 has Poetics, so there’s a massive surplus. Whenever a new expansion comes out, you’re able to purchase the previous expansion’s stuff with Poetics, so they’re just a unified way to buy old stuff. However, there are a lot of valuable personal uses for Poetics!

Where to spend Tomestones of Poetics in FFXIV

In Final Fantasy XIV, Allagan Tomestones of Poetics are best spent at Rowena’s Representative vendors found in major expansion hub towns like Mor Dhona and Idyllshire. These vendors offer a convenient way to purchase gear sets from previous expansions, such as Augmented Ironworks (level 50), Augmented Shire (level 60), and Augmented Scaevan (level 70), which are ideal for leveling combat jobs. You can also buy relic weapon materials from older expansions, orchestrion rolls for in-game music, and crafting materials like Unidentifiable Ore that can be exchanged for valuable topsoil. Additionally, Poetics gear can be traded for Grand Company Seals, which unlock further rewards. Since Poetics primarily serve older content, they provide a useful resource for gearing alts or collecting glamour items rather than current endgame upgrades.

You can trade in your Poetics at every expansion’s hub town (Mor Dhona, Idyllshire, etc.) but the Rowena’s Representative vendors in Ul’dah, Limsa Lominsa, and Gridania, sell A Realm Reborn gear, the representative in Ishgard sells Heavensward gear, and the representative in Kugane sells Stormblood stuff. There’s also Mowen’s Merchant in the Crystarium for Shadowbringers gear and the Agora Merchant in Old Sharlayan for Endwalker gear.

You can find these NPCs on the map in most of the hub cities near the main Aetheryte as marked by the blue sack icon:

Below, we list a few things you can dump them on, in order of our personal preference.

Leveling gear for combat jobs

You should spend your Tomestones of Poetics on leveling gear for combat jobs by purchasing Augmented Ironworks (level 50), Augmented Shire (level 60), and Augmented Scaevan (level 70) gear from Rowena’s Representative NPCs, which provide strong equipment to help you progress efficiently. For level 80 gear, you will need to visit Eulmore to buy higher item level sets. This gear is effective for pushing through content until you reach the next upgrade benchmark, making it a reliable investment for leveling your combat jobs before moving on to newer expansions’ gear.

You can get Augmented Ironworks (level 50) gear from the Rowena’s Representative NPCs in Ul’dah, Gridania, or Limsa Lominsa, Augmented Shire (level 60) gear from the rep in Ishgard, Augmented Scaevan (level 70) gear from the rep in Kugane, Augmented Cryptlurker (level 80) gear from the rep in the Crystarium, and Augmented Credendum (level 90) gear from the NPC in Old Sharlayan.

This stuff is pretty strong and it’ll take you most of the way to the next level benchmark before you’ll need to upgrade.

Relic weapon materials

Relic weapon materials can be purchased using Tomestones of Poetics, primarily for relic weapons from previous expansions such as A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and Shadowbringers. These materials include items like Thavnarian Scalepowder for Shadowbringers relics and various other crafting components required for earlier relic weapon questlines. While these relic weapons are often sought for their unique appearance and nostalgia, they generally serve more as glamour or side goals rather than optimal gear at the current endgame level. Investing Tomestones in these materials is a viable option if you enjoy collecting or completing older content, but keep in mind that newer expansions typically require different currencies for their relic upgrades.

If you’re interested, you can buy the materials for some of the previous expansions’ relic weapons for Poetics. You can grab some of the stuff ahead of time before even starting their respective quests, but some require you to get to certain parts of the questline to buy.

You can buy almost all of these materials from Auriana in Mor Dhona, Hismena in Idyllshire, or the Rowena’s Representative NPCs in Ishgard, Gridania, Limsa Lominsa, and Ul’dah for Poetics. Some of them can only be purchased from specific quest NPCs during the relevant relic quest step, though.

A Realm Reborn/Zodiac weapons requires a few materials. Here’s what you can buy before you even start the quest for it, along with how many you need to make one weapon:

  • 1 Radz-at-Han Quenching Oil (15 Poetics each)
  • 3 Thavnairian Mist (20 Poetics each)
  • 3 Superior Enchanted Ink (25 Poetics each)

These items are only obtainable either during the required step or after you unlock the required step:

  • 15 Mysterious Maps (75 Poetics each)
  • 9 Brave Books (100 Poetics each)
  • 4 Sacred Spring Water (200 Poetics each)
  • 12 Mahatma (50 Poetics each)

You don’t mandatorily need the Mysterious Maps, as you can farm the Alexandrite you get from them using other methods, but if you have the Poetics to spare, you might as well.

Heavensward/Anima weapons require a ton of materials that you can buy with Poetics before you start the quest. You’ll need the following for a single weapon:

  • 10 Unidentifiable Ore (150 Poetics each)
  • 10 Unidentifiable Shells (150 Poetics each)
  • 10 Unidentifiable Bones (150 Poetics each)
  • 10 Unidentifiable Seeds (150 Poetics each)
  • 5 Aether Oil (350 Poetics each)
  • 50-60 Umbrite (75 Poetics each)
  • 125-150 Superior Enchanted Ink (25 Poetics each)
  • 125-150 Thavnairian Mist (20 Poetics each)
  • 50 Singing Clusters (40 Poetics each)

These items are also needed to make an Anima weapon, but you can only buy these after you get to their respective part of the quest:

  • 15 Pneumite (100 Poetics each)
  • 1 Archaic Enchanted Ink (500 Poetics each)

Shadowbringers/Resistance weapons only require four Thavnairian Scalepowders per weapon (costing 250 Poetics each), but you can’t buy these until you start the quest for this weapon.

As of patch 7.0, Endwalker/Manderville weapons are effectively a Poetics dump, and it’ll cost a total of 6,000 Poetics to make a complete weapon. These items are not purchasable until you start and get through the associated quests for the weapon.

That said, you can stock up on a lot of this stuff if you’re ever planning on backtracking relic weapons. Yay!

Orchestrions

Orchestrions in FFXIV are special housing items that act as jukeboxes, allowing players to play and enjoy the game’s extensive soundtrack within their personal or free company housing, as well as in inn rooms. Players can collect Orchestrion Rolls, which are items that unlock specific songs for playback. These rolls can be obtained through various means such as crafting, vendors, quest rewards, and achievements. Once a song is unlocked, it can be played repeatedly for all players in the room, enhancing the atmosphere with favorite tracks from the game. Orchestrions can be crafted by certain crafting classes or purchased, and they offer a unique way to personalize your in-game living space with music. Spending Tomestones of Poetics on Orchestrion Rolls is a popular choice for players who enjoy collecting and listening to FFXIV’s music, making it a worthwhile investment for those who appreciate the game’s soundtrack.

A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and Stormblood all have orchestrion rolls to buy from Rowena’s Representative for varying prices, if you like to collect the game’s music.

Gear to trade for Grand Company seals

You can trade certain gear purchased with Tomestones of Poetics to your Grand Company in exchange for Grand Company seals, which can then be used to buy various useful items. To do this, you need to have reached at least Sergeant Second Class rank in your Grand Company. The gear eligible for trade includes dungeon and tomestone vendor items of Aetherial, Green, or Blue rarity that are sellable to vendors. Trading in this gear is a convenient way to convert excess Poetics gear into seals, which you can then spend on Ventures, Aetheryte Tickets, Glamour Prisms, and Materiel Containers for minions and mounts. This method effectively recycles older gear while boosting your Grand Company seal count for valuable rewards.

Okay, here’s the thing. If all your combat jobs are at max level and you don’t need that Cryptlurker (or older) gear anymore, you can buy it and then go turn it in to your Grand Company for company seals. It’s best to buy accessories, as they’re the cheapest and still turn in for around 1,700 seals. You do need to be Sergeant Second Class rank or higher at your respective GC, though.

This way, you can use GC seals to buy things like Ventures, GC Aetheryte Tickets, Glamour Prisms, and even Materiel Containers, which are effectively RNG loot boxes for old minions and even mounts, if you’re lucky. If you don’t already have it, there are also emotes, orchestrion rolls, and chocobo bardings to buy.

Unidentifiable Ore to trade in for Grade 3 Thanalan Topsoil

You can spend your Tomestones of Poetics to purchase Unidentifiable Ore from Hismena in Idyllshire for 150 Poetics each. This ore can then be traded to Bertana at Mowena’s Center for Cultural Promotion in Idyllshire for Grade 3 Thanalan Topsoil, which is highly valued for gardening as it increases the chance of plants intercrossing. This method provides a convenient way to obtain topsoil without the need for gathering from unspoiled nodes, making it a popular choice for gardeners looking to enhance their crops or for those who want to sell topsoil on the market board for profit.

This is really the last resort. If you have everything above (or if you really don’t want that stuff), the soil market is always fine. To get it, you’ll need to trade your Poetics for Unidentifiable Ore (yes, the same ones needed for the Anima weapon) and then head to Idyllshire. Talk to Bertana inside of Mowena’s Center for Cultural Promotion and select “Uncanny Knickknacks” to trade your ore for topsoil.

Most of the materials you trade Poetics for are extremely old and have little-to-no value anymore. However, topsoil is pretty much always in use (though the price does fluctuate) as you’ll need high-grade soil to cross breed specific plants (like the very valuable Thavnairian Onion).

Some players will note that they’d rather just let their Poetics overcap than to even bother selling soil, but it’s up to you.

What hidden gems make Poetics worth spending in FFXIV

Hidden gems that make Tomestones of Poetics worth spending in Final Fantasy XIV include:

  • Topsoil (Grade Three Thanalan Soil): Purchased by trading Poetics for Unidentifiable Ore, then exchanged for topsoil at Idyllshire. Topsoil is consistently in demand for high-grade gardening and crossbreeding rare plants like the Thavnairian Onion, making it a valuable resource for crafters and gardeners.

  • Orchestrion Rolls: These music rolls for the in-game orchestrion can be bought with Poetics, allowing players to collect and enjoy the game’s soundtrack in their personal spaces. Some rolls are rare and sought after by collectors.

  • Grand Company Seals via Gear Trade-In: Buying older expansion gear with Poetics and then trading it to your Grand Company for seals is a clever way to convert Poetics into Grand Company Seals. These seals can then be spent on ventures, glamour prisms, and rare minions or mounts, offering indirect but valuable returns.

  • Tier VI Combat Materia: Available for purchase with Poetics, these materia are useful for enhancing gear and can be a practical investment for players looking to optimize their equipment.

  • Relic Weapon Materials: While a major Poetics sink, relic weapon components for older expansions remain a meaningful use, especially for players pursuing legacy content or collection goals.

These options provide utility beyond simple gear upgrades, catering to collectors, crafters, and players seeking alternative ways to leverage their Poetics efficiently.

What lesser-known items from Rowena’s vendors are worth collecting with Poetics

Lesser-known but worthwhile items from Rowena’s vendors to collect with Tomestones of Poetics in FFXIV include:

  • Minions such as the Wide-eyed Fawn, Dust Bunny, and Fledgling Dodo, each costing only 3 Poetics, offering charming companions for a minimal investment.

  • Orchestrion Rolls like Reflections and Frontiers Within (500 Poetics each), Contention and Ominous Prognisticks (375 Poetics each), and high-cost ones such as Impact and Westward Tide (1600 Poetics each), which allow players to customize their in-game music experience.

  • Tier VI Combat Materia available for 800 Poetics each, useful for enhancing gear stats.

  • Crafting Materials including various Thavnairian items, Doman Weave, Scarlet Urushi, and others priced between 10 to 50 Poetics depending on quality, which can be valuable for crafters or for selling on the market.

  • Unidentifiable Ore and Shells (150 Poetics each), which can be traded for Grade Three Soils used in gardening or sold for profit.

  • Grand Company Seal Conversion by purchasing and trading in older gear and accessories (including shields and rings) from Ironworks, Shire, and Scaevan sets, which can net a significant amount of seals for other valuable items.

These items provide diverse options beyond just gear upgrades, catering to collectors, crafters, and players interested in unique cosmetics or resource conversion.
