How to solve the Selunite Outpost statue puzzle in Baldur s Gate 3

Guides

Hidden deep within the Selunite Outpost lies a puzzle of moonlit statues whose secrets guard ancient magic. One wrong turn can plunge your party into darkness, but align the light just right-and the path ahead reveals itself.

Shortly after the Goblin Camp – where you can do the “Ask the Goblin Priestess for Help” and “Rescue the Druid Halsin” quests – you’ll be able to head down to the Underdark, once you solve a puzzle in the Defiled Temple. Past the door and down a long ladder, you’ll find the Selunite Outpost. The problem is, the exit is guarded by a pair of statues that fire Radiant damage.

Our Baldur’s Gate 3 guide will explain how to solve the Selunite Outpost puzzle so you can get past the two statues and continue exploring the Underdark.

Exploring Selunite Outpost in BG3

Hidden within the Underdark, the Selunite Outpost is a mysterious location tied to the Moonmaiden’s followers. Players exploring its chambers will find remnants of old faith, moonlit architecture, and a series of mechanisms guarding deeper secrets. The statue puzzle here challenges observation and logic, requiring careful alignment and interaction to progress further into the temple’s sanctum.

Make sure you’ve got someone with high Dexterity – specifically high Sleight of Hand – and preferably some Thieves’ Tools in your party. There are several locked doors and trapped chests to grab on your way to the statues, and the main gate out of the Selunite Temple is also locked. When you’re ready to head out, just make sure someone has a ranged attack of some sort – either a ranged weapon or spell.

Selunite Outpost statue puzzle solution in BG3

Inside the Selunite Outpost, climb the stairs flanking the central statue to spot the glowing moonstone atop its staff. Launch a ranged attack from arrows or spells to shatter the moonstone, which powers down the two gate statues firing radiant bolts outside. Pass a Sleight of Hand check with Thieves’ Tools on the portcullis to exit safely into the Underdark, or sneak crouch past them beforehand if needed.

At the north end of the Selunite Outpost, you’ll find a locked portcullis and a nearby glowing statue. Outside of the door, there’s a pair of statues. While you’re poking around, a minotaur will show up to helpfully demonstrate how deadly the statues are. They’ll fire bolts of Moonlight Artillery that deal Radiant damage to anything within range. Instead of trying your luck against them, it’s better – and very easy – to disable them entirely.

Have someone in your party run up the stairs on either side of the exit. That gives you a better camera angle to target the Moonstone at the top of the staff held by the statue inside the outpost. Fire a ranged attack at the Moonstone itself – it’s easy to hit since it’s an inanimate object and it only has 1 hit point.

Once they’re disabled, you’ll need to pass a DC 20 Sleight of Hand check to unlock the portcullis. After it’s unlocked, you can continue exploring the Underdark to find the Adamantine Forge, the Arcane Tower, and a bunch of tunnels with lighting (or lack thereof) that absolutely lives up to name of this massive cave system.

How to disable the moonstone at Selunite Outpost fast

The fastest way to disable the moonstone at the Selunite Outpost in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to shoot it with a ranged attack from an elevated position inside the outpost. This shatters the crystal instantly, powering down the statues outside.

Quick Access Steps

Climb the wooden ladders flanking the gate to the upper walkway for a clear line of sight on the glowing moonstone atop the central Selûne statue. Use any bow shot, Firebolt, Ray of Frost, or throwable-its 1 HP ensures one hit destroys it.

Stealthy Speed Option

Send a rogue like Astarion to sneak to the portcullis, lockpick it (DC 14), then fire a single arrow at the moonstone without triggering attacks. This avoids combat and takes seconds in turn-based mode.

Pro Tips

Follow the white energy beams from the statues to spot the moonstone if obscured. Shadowheart gains inspiration for the deed, and it unlocks safe passage plus nearby loot. Avoid melee or ground-level shots to prevent statue retaliation.

Shoot the moonstone from above where is the ladder access

To shoot the moonstone from above in the Selunite Outpost, use the wooden ladders on either side of the locked portcullis gate inside the outpost. These ladders lead to an elevated walkway with a clear vantage point overlooking the glowing moonstone atop the central Selûne statue.

Ladder Locations

The ladders flank the gate directly: one on the left (west) side and one on the right (east) side, positioned at roughly X:150-155, Y:-230. Climb either one quickly after entering via the Defiled Temple ladder-turn the camera around at the top for an unobstructed shot.

Shooting Steps

Position a ranged character (archer or caster) on the walkway, aim at the moonstone following the white energy beams, and fire any non-psychic/poison attack like an arrow or Firebolt. It shatters in one hit, disabling the statues instantly.
