Find All Onion Locations in Pikmin 4 and How to Get Them

Guides

Track down every Onion in Pikmin 4 with precise cave locations, clever routing tips, and missed early-game spots that quietly shape the size and strength of your squad.

The Onions we list below are not to be confused with Flarlic, a type of onion that expands the maximum amount of Pikmin you can have out at once (up to 100). While collecting Flarlic counts toward the total Onion count per area, they do not give you any new type of Pikmin.

Glow Pikmin are only obtainable through night explorations and do not have an Onion.

With the exception of the Purple and White Onions, all colored Onions are found on the surface, not in caves.

Below, we list which maps have which Onions in them and what caves you can get more specialty Pikmin from.

Pikmin 4 Red Pikmin and Onion location

Red Pikmin and their Onion appear early in Pikmin 4 on the landing site in Sun-Speckled Terrace. Throw a leaf-dwelling Pikmin onto the dirt mound blocking the purple structure to reveal it. The Onion sprouts instantly, yielding 10 Red Pikmin that resist fire hazards. Use them to expand your squad against enemies and obstacles right away.

The Red Onion is the default, so you’ll start off with this one.

Red Pikmin are fireproof and also strong, making them great fighters.

Pikmin 4 Yellow Pikmin and Onion location

Yellow Pikmin join your squad in Sun-Speckled Terrace, where their Onion is stuck on a high ledge near the electrical hazard area. Use Oatchi’s jump and your existing Pikmin to reach the ledge, free the Onion, and carry it back to base. Yellow Pikmin resist electricity and can be thrown higher than other types, so once their Onion is secured at the landing site, they open up new routes, shortcuts, and treasure opportunities gated by electric fences and elevated platforms.

There are two Yellow Onions: one in Sun-Speckled Terrace and another in Blossoming Arcadia.

Yellow Pikmin are immune to electricity and can be thrown very high, making them good for reaching high treasure or loot.

Pikmin 4 Blue Pikmin and Onion location

Blue Pikmin appear in the Serene Shores area after completing the first cave. Their Onion sits atop a raised cliff on the central island, accessible by building a bridge with Rock Pikmin or using Winged Pikmin to carry them across. Throw Red Pikmin to defeat nearby Bulborbs and clear the path. Once reached, the Onion sprouts after feeding it 10 Blue Pikmin, enabling water-based rescues and transport.

There are two Blue Onions: one in Sun-Speckled Terrace and another in Serene Shores.

Blue Pikmin are waterproof and can run around on the pond floors with you.

Throw pink flowers or leaves onto water to produce winged carriers that fly over obstacles and enemies. The Pink Onion sits on a raised ledge in the cave’s final sublevel-use Rock Pikmin to break blocking stones, then swarm up the revealed path to claim it. This early unlock expands transport options across the area.

You first encounter them in the caves of Blossoming Arcadia, where a Candypop Bud lets you convert other Pikmin into White Pikmin. Later caves in the Sun-Speckled Terrace and Serene Shores also feature White Candypop Buds, giving you more chances to grow a small squad for poison-resistant tasks and treasure carrying before they revert to your standard Pikmin types upon leaving the cave.

The White Onion can only be accessed once you complete the story-based portion of Hero’s Hideaway. You’ll need to complete a separate game mode (Olimar’s Shipwrecked Tale), as well as five pretty tough Dandori challenges that unlock after finishing Olimar’s bit.

White Pikmin are poisonous and deal damage to enemies when eaten. They’re also poison-proof, allowing them to take out enemies swarmed in toxic gas without dying.

You can also find White Pikmin in the following caves:

  • Subzero Sauna (Serene Shores)
  • Doppelgänger’s Den (Hero’s Hideaway)
  • Ultimate Testing Range (Giant’s Hearth)

Best caves for farming Flarlic in Pikmin 4

Flarlic in Pikmin 4 serves as a key upgrade material to enhance Onions, allowing them to produce more Pikmin per cycle, and grows back daily on the surface or in caves for repeatable farming.

Top Caves for Flarlic

Caves offer reliable Flarlic spots since surface ones are finite (one per main area) and regrow slowly, while cave plants respawn each day after exiting.

  • Last-Frost Cavern (Sun-Speckled Terrace): Early-game cave in the northwest corner; Flarlic hides behind smashable pots in the large top-left room of sublevel 1. Quick access with minimal enemies makes it ideal for beginners farming Yellow/Red Pikmin upgrades.

  • Secluded Courtyard (Blossoming Arcadia): On sublevel 3 west side, toss Pikmin into a broken pot to grab the Flarlic. Short cave with straightforward platforming suits mid-game runs.

  • Other notable caves: Hero’s Hideaway and Giant’s Hearth caves have surface Flarlic nearby but fewer indoor respawns; prioritize early caves for efficiency over deep post-game ones like those in Primordial Thicket.

Farming Tips

Rush to the Flarlic, pluck it, and exit the cave to save time-Pikmin auto-return pellets while you fast-travel out. Repeat daily across 2-3 caves to max all Onions quickly (each needs 5 Flarlic).

Cave Name Area Sublevel Access Needs Farm Speed
Last-Frost Cavern Sun-Speckled Terrace 1 (NW) Smash pots Fast
Secluded Courtyard Blossoming Arcadia 3 (W) Toss-up pot Medium
Serene Shores cave Serene Shores Varies Blue Pikmin Medium

Best caves for farming Flarlic efficiently in Pikmin 4

Last-Frost Cavern in Sun-Speckled Terrace stands out as the best early-game cave for efficient Flarlic farming due to its quick sublevel 1 access behind smashable pots, minimal enemy interference, and daily respawn.

Optimal Farming Caves

Secluded Courtyard in Blossoming Arcadia ranks next, with reliable Flarlic on sublevel 3 west in a toss-up pot-short path suits repeated daily runs once unlocked.

  • Other caves like Engulfed Castle (Serene Shores) offer surface-adjacent farming potential post-clearance, though deeper sublevels slow pure Flarlic focus compared to early spots.

  • Avoid late-game caves (e.g., Primordial Thicket’s Cavern for a King) for Flarlic alone; they excel in Pikmin types or nectar but lag in speed per plant.

Efficiency Comparison

Cave Area Sublevel Time per Run Why Efficient
Last-Frost Cavern Sun-Speckled Terrace 2-3 min Pots quick, early access
Secluded Courtyard Blossoming Arcadia 4-5 min Simple pot toss, respawns reliable
Engulfed Castle Serene Shores Surface/5 5+ min Post-Waterwraith flowers aid Pikmin too
